Capital Projects Updatehas been reviewed and approved by the board and the modifications committee. The architect/construction management firm is currently soliciting final bids. The next step will be to submit the permitting application package to the city for approval as well as gain approval from the postal service for the design at the amenity center. For those of you that attended the annual meeting, you saw the proposed concept for the mailbox design at the amenity center and other locations. For those of you that didn’t, the slides are available on the Wood Glen website at www.woodglen.org.

The final project we are currently working on is to investigate hike and bike trail improvements. A number of ideas have been suggested that we are reviewing but the primary focus at the moment is to see if we can extend the trail along the greenbelt from Henley Dr. north and west around to Plantation Dr., continue to improve sections of the existing trail that continue to washout, and to investigate new signage at the trail entrances. There have also been a number of requests to extend the trail from Behrens Ranch and Mira Vista along the front of our property on 3406. Unfortunately, we don’t feel there is enough room between the road and the perimeter wall to safely place a trail in this location. Additionally, our property lines end at the perimeter wall, and any trail placed in the easement would be subject to removal for any of the utility lines that run along that stretch.

There are three main areas we are focused on for capital projects: 1) perimeter and common fence maintenance and repair, 2) mailbox covers, and 3) hike and bike trail improvements. The wooden fence down Plantation and Creek Bend looks great with the new stain. We also made minor repairs to replace some pickets, top caps, and re-secure others. There are still a few posts that may need to be replaced due to deterioration at ground level, but in general, we are trying to get 2-3 more years out of the fence before we have to do a full replacement. You can do your part if you live on a lot with a common fence by keeping landscaping away from the bottom of the fence and reporting any repairs that need to be made to either your section rep or Goodwin Management.

By the time you receive this newsletter, the 3406 wall repairs should be complete. We ran into a number of delays with the engineering firm designing the replacement wall and column sections as well as delays with the city in permitting, but the repairs should have addressed any area that needed immediate attention. Monitoring and maintaining this wall will be an ongoing process, but we now have engineering plans for the footings, wall and column sections as well as a relationship with a construction company to quickly address any future needs. Again, if you live on a lot with a stone perimeter or common wall, please report any concerns as soon as possible.

The mailbox cover project is also moving along. The concept design

Keeping Central Texas Kids Warm for 22 Years

Submitted by Amber Brabham with The Junior League of Austin

For 22 years, Coats for Kids has provided for hundreds of thousands of Central Texas children in need of a warm winter coat. Coats for Kids is an annual Junior League of Austin community project that collects and distributes warm winter coats to eligible children and teenagers in the Central Texas area.

Each year, The Junior League of Austin, Jack Brown Cleaners, KASE 101 and KVUE partner to organize and facilitate the details of the project in an effort to bring the community together to ensure that the children of Central Texas stay warm. Last year approximately 28,000 coats were donated by the community and distributed to children in Central Texas. In order to make sure we have plenty of coats this winter, we need your help in collecting and donating.

Coat donations may be dropped off at your neighborhood Jack Brown Cleaners until December 3. There is a need this year to collect “warmer” winter coats. These might include ski coats, wool coats, heavy down or parkas. If you are interested in getting your family, neighbors and co-workers involved, consider organizing a coat drive.

For more information on School and Community Coats Dives contact the Coat Drive Coordinator at [email protected] or call 512.467.8982 ext 294.

Coats for Kids also urges the community to donate their time during sorting week (December

1 – 5) or on distribution day which will be held at the Palmer Events Center on Saturday, December 6. Volunteers must be at least 15 years of age during sorting week and 18 years of age on distribution day. Spanish speaking volunteers are especially needed and are encouraged to sign up for distribution day!

Contac t the Volunteer Coordina tor a t [email protected] for more information. For a complete list of volunteer opportunities, dates and more information log on to www.jlaustin.org.

Wood GlenHow to Protect Your Home

While You are AwayDecember is a month to enjoy the holiday season and reconnect

with your family and friends. This very often entails travel away from home and that makes your home an inviting target for thieves. What are some simple steps you can take to make your house a little less inviting to these very unwelcome guests?

1. Keep your front door clear. Thieves will case a neighborhood, looking for signs that homes are unoccupied. Have a trusted neighbor check your door everyday to clear away the assorted phone books, flyers, and Chinese food menus that frequently find their way to your doorstep. Thieves have even been known to mark a neighborhood with flyers themselves to see who is away.

2. Know your neighbors. Professional buglers will pull a moving or delivery van up to a house in the middle of the weekday and clean it out very quickly. Neighbors that stay home during the day and know that you are not moving is the best defense against this common threat. If you suspect a burglar is targeting your neighbor when they are not at home, call the police! Never try to confront or question them yourself.

3. Consider your lights. Stand out in the street and see how your occupied home typically looks at night. Which lights are on? Are the shades up or down? Will you have Christmas lights mounted but not turned on? There is no more obvious sign that a home is unoccupied than a porch or entry light that stays lit 24 hours a day. Have a trusted neighbor turn on different lights at night or purchase some inexpensive security plugs that allow you to vary the times your lights go on or off.

4. Use sound as a deterrent. There is nothing more effective in making a burglar find another house to prey on then hearing a large barking dog as they approach the front door. Smaller dogs such as poodles or terriers certainly bark more but may not scare away a determined burglar. You can also buy motion sensor alarms that simulate a large barking dog when someone comes onto your porch. Leaving a TV on is very effective, both for the noise and the flickering lights that can be seen through the windows. I wouldn’t recommend however using the 75” HD flat screen with surround sound for this purpose.

5. Get rid of the hidden keys. Don’t leave spare keys under the doormat, in the flowerpot, or even in the fake rock in the backyard. Thieves can find these very easily. The trusted neighbor is the best option for leaving a key behind.

6. Lock the gate that leads to your backyard. Once thieves gain access to your backyard and are shielded from detection by a privacy fence they can take their time breaking into your house.

These very simple methods should make your home less inviting to burglars and ensures that spoiled milk and a light coating of dust are the only things you need to worry about upon your return. Have a very happy holiday and be safe!

A Winter Nuisance - Boxelder Bugs

Boxelder bugs are dark brownish-black insects with orange markings around the edges of the thorax and wings. These bugs are about ½ an inch long as an adult. Nymphs, or immatures, look similar to adults, but are smaller, do not have fully developed wings which allows you to see their bright red abdomen.

While boxelder bugs typically do not cause damage to the landscape or structure, they may become a nuisance in and around homes from fall until spring. In the fall, adults and large nymphs gather in large numbers to move to areas to overwinter. Boxelder bugs spend the winter in cracks and crevices in walls, around door and window casings, tree holes and in debris on the ground. Sometimes they will try to move indoors to overwinter. On warm days from fall until spring, adult boxelder bugs will emerge from their overwintering location to warm themselves in the sun.

Removing female boxelder trees from the area may solve problems with large, repeated infestations of boxelder bugs. Hiding places can also be reduced or eliminated by removing debris such as boards, leaves and rocks from the area as well as sealing and cracks and crevices around the home with caulk or expanding foam. If chemical treatment is desired treat overwintering areas with chemicals containing active ingredients such as pyrethrin, cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, carbaryl or acephate.
