GO BIG BLUE!!!!
Lines from the Lioness: It has been three months since I was installed as President
of Franklin Business & Professional Women and the time
has flown by. As the old saying goes, “Times Flies When
You're Having Fun!” and I am having fun and I hope you
have been having fun too! I am so blessed to have such
wonderful BPW members. You give of yourself unselfishly
to benefit our local club and your community and I am
proud to call you my friends. You came out of the gate
roaring and you continue to amaze me! From Mustang
Mania to the Habitat Breakfast, from Fill the Bus to the
Garden Spot Run, you have donated your time AND money
to support the BPW Community Projects that we have
become associated with and known for. Your attendance at
the meetings has been great and I appreciate your efforts
to attend. I know everyone is so busy with their family and
their job so I certainly thank you for your commitment.
Hopefully, it has been worthwhile as we have gotten
better informed about events that are happening in our
community like the Package Liquor Sales vote and the Goodnight Library addition
proposal. Our August Meeting, “Schools R Us” was also well attended and we were
able to meet some of our new teachers, the Principals and Coaches in the Simpson
County School System as well as hearing informative and interesting comments from
High School Principal Tim Schlosser and Superintendant Jim Flynn. As the title of
the program indicated, we are the schools and the schools are us! Mr. Schlosser and
Mr. Flynn challenged us to become involved in our school system any way we
can....stay involved and stay informed!
As the first quarter comes to a close, I feel a sense of accomplishment; however, I
know we have a lot more work to do. September and October will be a very busy time
for us. We will hold our annual family picnic in September and meet our local
candidates running for office. We want to stress how important it is to be informed
about the candidates in order to make an intelligent decision when going to vote.
Let's Roar!!!. Let our voices be heard! We hope to have a voter registration booth at
the Festival on the Square and once again, we will host the popular Political Forum
as part of our National Business Women's Week activities. Speaking of NBWW, this is
the biggest of our annual activities and I hope everyone will participate in some way.
We have a tentative committee set up to start making the plans for this very
important week. If you would like to be involved in any of the plans for the week or if
you have any ideas for programs or activities, please let me know. We hope to have
something that will be of interest to all our members.
Once again, I appreciate all of your hard work. Let's make the 2nd quarter as
successful as the first. Continue your efforts to recruit new members. Give other
women in Franklin the opportunity to be involved in this wonderful organization
called Franklin BPW. Let's continue to Roar!!!! and Roar Loudly!!!!!!!

Franklin BPW’s
―Fancy Family Picnic‖.
This is our own version
“Fancy Farm” but ours is a family picnic
without the politics! However we will
have a “Meet and Greet” of
the local candidates.
Sunday, September 16th from 1:30pm to 4:30pm
at the Community park,
at the BPW Pavillion(by the creek)
BPW will provide:
paper goods, plastic
ware, Hamburgers,
Hotdogs and the buns.
Bring your favorite Side-Dish,
Salad, dessert or/and drinks
Also bring games:
horse shoes, corn hole, balls, etc.
Please let Sharon know what you would
like to bring. We don’t want to end up
with 10 bags of chips.
Be creative: baked beans, corn, fruit,
pasta salad, apple pie, chips, potato
salad, fruit salad, raw veggies and dip,
you get the picture.
Are you a Master Griller?
We are looking for someone to
“man” the grill, could
that be you? Your husband ?
Brother ? significant other?
Let Sharon know if you want that title
and we will see if you are. (lol)
This picnic will take the place of our
Regular BPW meeting for
September
Fancy Farm is a census-designated place in Graves
County, Kentucky, about ten miles west of the county
seat, Mayfield on Kentucky Route 80, in the rural
western portion of the state called the Jackson
Purchase. Fancy Farm was settled by Roman Catholics
starting in 1829, and is known for its strong Catholic
community. The community grew around St. Jerome
Church, built in 1836. The first post office opened in
1843. The colorful name was apparently chosen when
the post office opened, by a man who was applying to
be postmaster. First mentioned in the U.S. Census in
1870 as a post office in Boswell Precinct; first men-
tioned as a town in Magisterial District 5 in the 1910
census; finally enumerated as a town in its own
precinct in the 1920 census. The 2010 United States
Census reported that Fancy Farm's population is 458.
The village is the site of the annual Fancy Farm
Picnic, famous as a traditional political gathering
attracting statewide and occasionally national
candidates. The picnic began in 1880 as a purely local
affair. It takes place mostly on the grounds of Fancy
Farm Elementary School. Since 1956 it has been held
on the first Saturday in August. It has come to
represent the traditional starting point of the fall
campaign season in Kentucky.
The picnic was of purely local interest until A. B.
"Happy" Chandler began making appearances, going
for the first time in 1931 while running for Lieutenant
Governor.
So many Kentucky politicians attend that it tends to
only be news when a major politician decides not to
make an appearance, such as senator Jim Bunning in
2007. National figures that have made speeches in-
clude George C. Wallace and Al Gore. Vice President
Alben Barkley, known for his oratorical skills, spoke
many times over the years before his death in 1956.
He was born nearby in a small community called
Wheel.
In addition to the political appearances, the picnic
offers traditional fair activities like bingo games and
raffle prizes. Food includes barbecue, a fish fry and
homemade baked goods. The event was recognized in
the 1985 Guinness Book of World Records as the
"World's Largest Picnic", for the consumption of 15,000
pounds of mutton, pork, and chicken at the 1982
picnic.
The picnic is profitable and proceeds are used to
finance local improvements. No outside vendors
participate, and about 12,000 to 15,000 people attend
each year.

The Franklin Business and Professional Women has been a major scholarship
sponsor for the Simpson County Distinguished Young Woman Program for
many years. Besides the monetary donation many of the Franklin BPW
members serve on the committee.
This year’s Simpson County Distinguished Young Woman Program will be
held Saturday, September 22 at the Goodnight Library Auditorium at 7:00pm.
There are 18 Senior girls participating for the opportunity to win thousands of
dollars in cash and college-offered scholarships. This is the 29th year for the
Simpson County DYW Program, formerly called Jr Miss. The name was
changed to Distinguished Young Woman in 2011. Participants will be judged
in 5 categories: scholastics, interview, talent, poise and fitness.
The Simpson County Distinguished Young Woman is part of a National
scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full,
individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates
in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments. The program has provided
life-changing experiences for more than 700,000 young women and more than
$93 million in cash scholarships has been awarded at the local, state and
national levels combined. Distinguished Young Women strives to give every
young woman the opportunity to further her education and prepare for a

largest and oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. It has
provided life-changing experiences for more than 700,000 young women across
the country and more than $93 million in cash scholarships at the local, state
and national levels. In addition to cash scholarships, Distinguished Young
Women participants are eligible for college-granted scholarships from almost
200 colleges and universities. More than $108 million in college scholarship
opportunities were provided last year, some of which included full tuition,
room, and board to first-class institutions. Many participants leave the pro-
gram with scholarships to help them with their college educations, but all of
them walk away with friendships, life skills and increased self-confidence.
Distinguished Young Women strives to give every young woman the
opportunity to further her education and prepare for a successful future.

Hello All,
We are gearing up for another great year of “Distinguished
Young Women” which I will refer to as Jr. Miss because
everybody knows that name better!
Once again I am asking for volunteers to provide drinks
and/or snacks for practices. Ya’ll are always very generous
so I’m very thankful that all the dates have been signed up
for.
At the practices on Wed. Sept. 19th & Thurs. Sept 20th we
will be feeding the girls actual meals. On Wed. we will have
Subway trays, chips, soft drinks, water, cookies. On
Thurs. Sept 20th we will have Zaxbys trays, soft drinks,
water, some type of dessert & chips. These are very long
practices and they get very hungry and thirsty.
Sat. Sept. 22nd (Show)
For snacks, the girls love chips, cookies, fruit, popcorn, any
kind of sweets and we prefer water for the practices. We
will need soft drinks on Sept. 19th & 20th
Please let me know if you can help.

We Filled That BUS!
Katie & Avery
Saturday, August 4th from 10am till 5pm, members of the
Franklin Simpson BPW and Kiwanis Club jointly collected
items to fill the BUS with school supplies for the
Franklin Resource Center for the 2012-13 school year.
Special Thanks to the Volunteers that day:
From BPW: Brownie, Laurie, Nikki, Jennifer, Mary Thomas, Anna and Sharon
From Kiwanis: Kelly, Ardie, Catherine, Ronda, Pastor Locke, Charlie and Sharon
And Double Thanks to Robin for her support, to Jim and Robert for the use of the Bus and to
Wal-Mart for allowing us to be there and for the use of the outdoor cover.
And most of all “thank you”– Katie and Avery for their enthusiasm. I truly believe that their
smiling faces and their requests for supplies really helped. (next year we need more KIDS)
We also had cash donations, but I was truly touched when Katie and Avery were given $10.00
each for their hard work for the day and they both wanted to buy school supplies
and donate them. So at the end of the day they went shopping. Thank you girls.
Thanks to Janetta Shanklin and all
the committee members who
participated and everyone else who
donated their time and money for a
successful project.

Women Misbehavin' Well behaved women never make history
BPW Foundation National News:
THE BPW STORY It was 1918, a morning in May, and in New York the temperature touched a summery 68°. A happy day, fashionable Lord & Taylor advertised 1,200 "dainty cotton dresses at comfortable prices - $5.50 to $6.50"! There was other news: a war was in progress. Casualty in all the newspapers over the country was sobering, but the American army was cheered in Paris, the French had just blocked a new German drive. Downtown in the Fulton Street Cafeteria of the YWCA 100 women gathered
to talk and make news. Meeting at the invitation of the YWCA's War Work Council, these
business and professional women were asked to suggest how working women in
American might be more effectively utilized in the war time economy. Perhaps it didn't
excite too many of the New Yorkers who read about it in the papers the next day, but the
US Government was tremendously interested. The Government had, in fact, allocated
$65,000 to the war work council for the organization of a national women's association.
The association was to prove itself capable of assisting in the informal mobilization and
training of women to fill jobs vacated by men who had been called into the armed
services. The Fulton Cafeteria meeting selected a 25-member National Business
Women's Committee to contact independent business women's clubs and to set up the
basic plan of a national association into which these separate women's clubs might be
united. Lena Madesin Phillips, later a National President, became executive secretary of
the National Business Women's Committee.
The war ended in November 1918. It might also have ended the National
Business Women's Committee, but fortunately, club women and government officials alike
felt that a united business women's association would be a national asset in the postwar
era. The War Department authorized the continued use of the $65,000 originally
appropriated to this work. A draft constitution was drawn up, publicity pushed, and in the
spring of 1919 the National Business Women's Committee recommended calling a
National Convention of state delegates to establish a permanent organization.
The Convention met in St. Louis in July 1919, and over 400 delegates and observers
established the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs.
Telegrams of congratulations and good wishes were sent from President Woodrow
Wilson, Secretary of the Treasury William G. McAdoo, and Secretary of the Navy
Josephus Daniels.
From the beginning the National Federation sought not only to expand
economic opportunity for women and the promotion of their welfare, but the improve-
ment of women's preparation for business and professions. This was nicely
articulated in 1920 by the slogan: "A Better Business Woman for a Better
Business World." The Federation established an active scholarship program
and recommended: "at least a high school education for every business girl.
At the Chattanooga Convention in 1922, Lena Lake Forrest, National President,
said: "We must see to it here that the young woman coming into the business
world today shall be so well equipped that she will be regarded as a great
business asset…"
The BPW/USA Federation has continually fought economic
discrimination against women. It has encouraged the penetration by women
into new vocational fields. It initiated Business Women's Week to give every
local community an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of women workers
to the economy and to give working women an opportunity for self-evaluation.
It has worked for equal pay, equal legal rights, improved social security, and for
other progressive programs aimed at improved community welfare. It
recognized that, in the long run, the well-being of any one group depends
on the prosperity of the local and state communities, the nation, and the
international world at large.

is important for veterans making the career
transition and calls out Joining Forces Mentoring
Plus™ as a good program for women veterans.
And the Illinois Technology Association is

When Women Vote, Leaders Listen So be sure you, your
friends and family are registered. Most people don't realize it
but, depending on the laws in your state, these are just a few
of the life-changes that might knock you off the voter roll and
force you to re-register:
Getting married or divorced/changing your name
Moving, even within the same city or town
Going to college
Going through a mortgage foreclosure
The National Women’s Law Center and Rock the Vote have a
handy online voter registration tool . If you're not registered,
the system will make sure you get the right form mailed to
you, already filled out! If it turns out that you are already
registered the system will verify that you're on the voter rolls.
