Happy, healthy New Year to all! Another year has passed us by so quickly, marking the 37th year that our Co-op is in business. thanks to all of you for supporting the Co-op and contributing to the success of our great store.

there are three board of directors seats up for election this year and each is for a three-year term. If you’re interested in running for one of the open seats, please pick up a candidate application packet at customer service or go to ukiahcoop.com and follow the link on the home page. the application deadline for candidates is February 1st and voting will be March 1st through March 31st. the results of the election will be announced at our annual member-owner meeting sched-uled for Saturday, April 5th. Details of the annual meeting will be in the March/April edition of the Co-op News Beet. Hope to see you all there.

2013 was a profitable year for the Co-op. the board of directors has indicated they will declare a percentage of the profit to be distributed back to the member-owners in di-rect proportion to their individual purchases. Patronage dividend checks will be mailed out in early April to the member-owner’s name and address on record. Please ensure that we have your current mailing address on file to receive your dividend check.

As we ended the 2013 year we employed 93 staff members. I greatly appreciate all their individual contributions, which keep the Co-op moving forward. I am excited about the upcoming year offering new and fun classes and educational events. We appreciate your feedback and creative ideas that assist us in exploring better ways to excite you.

We are a member and supporter of the Non-gMo Verified Project. they are a non-profit organization that offers a third party verifi-cation that supports labeling of non-gMo products and offers education to consumers. Last year we started a labeling campaign in the store using the Non-gMo Project’s but-terfly logo which represents products that have been non-gMo verified. We have ap-proximately 1,946 items throughout the Co-op highlighted with the butterfly logo.

the support of our Co-op member-owners sets us apart from other businesses and ev-ery little bit we do together in our community helps build better sustainability now and in the future. together we have built the foun-dation of this trusted community marketplace that provides for our diverse community. We are stronger together!

In cooperation,

Lori rosenberg general Manager

Growing up in Minnesota enabled me to enjoy some unique experiences. When the cold air came we would ask our father to flood our yard to make our skating rink. He would have my siblings and me shovel off the snow and he would flood the yard over several days and nature would work her magic. it wasn’t long before all the neighborhood kids would be over to skate. My home town had numerous outdoor rinks where you could play ice hockey day or night. The lights on the rinks were shut off at 10:00 P.M. My grade school had an outdoor rink and we played lots of spir-ited hockey games at recess and lunch. Kids in the northland were pretty much born with ice skates on.

Most folks are aware that the Wellness department of the co-op offers our great customers an extensive bulk herb and tea section that is user friendly and an opportunity to purchase herbs and teas that aren’t packaged. We receive herbs and teas from Frontier in iowa, Two Hills in Van-couver B.C., Mountain Rose in Eugene Oregon, Oregon’s Wild Harvest outside Port-land Oregon, Starwest near Sacramento, Pacific Bo-tanicals in Grants Pass Oregon and last but certainly not least Mcfadden’s farm in nearby Potter Valley. We experience excellent turnover on our herbs and teas which enables us to offer fresh products to you folks. We welcome any suggestions of products you would like to see us carry on our “herb wall”; so please don’t hesitate! Oregon’s Wild Harvest’s immune Booster Tea is a delicious blend to help ward off those winter “bugs”. We carry lots of black, green, and chai blend teas. We

recently added Nigella Sativa that has various names such as black seed, black cumin and fennel flower. it is used similarly to chia seed and is used for various culinary dishes. There are numerous sprouting seeds available such as alfalfa, sunflower, broccoli and mixes. Cinnamon is loved by most folks but they often don’t

realize that some cinnamons aren’t actually true cinnamons. Sounds con-fusing but only the true cinnamon grown in Sri Lanka can actually call itself true cinnamon. Cinnamon cassia which is traditionally used for baking doesn’t have the blood sugar modulat-ing benefits that true cinnamon verum contains. We carry both and sell lots of each. Our bulk cayenne powders are popular and the higher the H.U. (Heat-ing Units) the hotter it is. Please swing by and check out our vast array of herbs, spices and teas and remember that buying in bulk is generally easier on family budgets.

Ever hear of the polar bear clubs? These are folks living in climates that experience cold winters and find it amusing to cut big holes in the ice on lakes and then jump in as a badge of honor. Brrr!!! i am an accidental char-

ter member of that group of strange folks. i was eleven and visiting my grandparents around Christmas in my home town. My buddies and i raced each other to our friend Tim’s house and his Father had flooded their yard for a skating rink. i unfortunately didn’t know this and won the race with my buddies and fell head first into that freezing water that took my breath away. Next thing i knew i was in my Grandma’s bath tub unthawing. Remember what i said about unique experiences in the northland? Yikes!

The Co-op News • January - February 2014 5

A New Year has begun and whatever your celebrations, blessings, or resolutions are, the New Year is here! 2014 is a fresh new palate to start new beginnings. We have ended the holiday season and are coming into Spring which is just around the corner. i look forward to the changes that Spring brings, new crisp sunny weath-er, flowers in bloom and new releases of wine. We can hang up our winter jackets and mitts and bring out the lighter sweaters and sandals. The winter can be dreary and spring just washes away the cold winter preparing us for a brand new year.

We had a 10% off wine and cheese sale back in No-vember during the Thanksgiving week and it went great! Everyone was in positive spirits and enjoying the festivities with the hectic and crazy week. We sold lots of wine and cheese and i had a fun time talking with a lot of our customers about pairings and suggestions that would be special for their family and friends. it’s great timing so all of you are fully stocked and prepared for the holidays.

Valentine’s day is creeping up on us and if you choose to celebrate that day, we have a vast selection of red wines and a wonderful display of cheeses for your spe-cial day. Romance and wine tend to go hand in hand and the ruby color of wine is the perfect Valentine’s day color. Red wines also complement the chilly weather in February. i enjoy the light hearted Pinot Noirs, and Husch makes a fabulous one that we carry at the store. if you prefer white wine, you can go with a tropical aro-matic Gewürztraminer or Riesling, spice it up! do some-thing different! While reading up on how other countries celebrate Valentine’s day, i came across a lot of differ-ent traditions that i found intriguing. did you know that in Finland Valentine’s day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”? As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones. in Singapore, Singaporeans are among the biggest spenders on Valentine’s day, with 60% of Singaporeans indicating that they would spend between $100 and $500 during the season leading up

to the holiday. And in Saudi Arabia, in 2002 and 2008, religious police banned the sale of all Valentine’s day items, telling shop workers to remove any red items, because the day is considered a Christian holiday. This ban has created a black market for roses and wrapping paper. Not everyone just buys flowers and chocolates like we tend to do in the Western region!

This year, the Marketing and Outreach department is or-ganizing a special event at Uncorked restaurant here in Ukiah before Valentine’s day. Kerri Barnett, owner and proprietor of Uncorked, is featuring a wine and cheese pairing and a port and chocolate pairing on Saturday, February 1st. Kerri is going to be using wines that we carry at the Co-op and pairing them with cheese that we also carry. it is going to be a light hearted, interac-tive and fun event and if it sounds like something you and some friends or you and a loved one would like to participate in, you can contact our store directly at 707-462-4778 or pop by Customer Service next time you’re in the store, classes fill up fast. i hope to see a lot of friendly familiar faces!

PD Checks are Coming Soon!a few things to remember....

1. Checks are based on eligible purchases! Barring any unforeseen calamities the Co-op will be distributing Pd checks to owners based upon their eligible purchases (those purchases made during quarters that they were current on their B share purchases, or were Fair Share). 2. Let us know when you move! Please update your mailing address with us if you have moved or are not sure we have the correct one. We need to be able to mail you the check. Please

e-mail [email protected] with any updates to your address. 3. Cash it - Don’t keep it! Some people may think that not cashing the check will act as a “donation” to the Co-op. However, for bookkeeping purposes we strongly encourage you to cash or deposit your check. if you want to support the Co-op, continue shopping here, and if you’d like to make a donation we’d be happy to give you a list of the groups we support.

The Co-op News • January - February 2014 8

Sales growth began improving in the third quarter! The third quarter sales are 8.11% over the same period last year and year-to-date sales growth is at 5.83%. Sales to owners composed 72% of total sales, and 62% of the products sold were organic. The co-op had an average of 1159 customers per day; purchasing an average basket size of $32.33. Sales growth has been sluggish so far this year; hopefully the final quarter of the year will give our sales growth a boost.

Share purchases were up over same period last year - we gained 171 new owners during the 3rd quarter. The co-op gave back $43,593 in owner discounts at the register in the third quarter – so far this year discounts are running at 1.30% of total sales. These register discounts are senior and “owner appreciation” discounts.

Product costs came in unexpectedly low for the quarter, giving us a lower year-to-date gross margin of 35.86%. The cost-of-goods-sold had been steadily increasing until this quarter so this decrease is welcome. The gross margin of 35.86% is used to pay all the store expenses, and hopefully give us a net profit for patronage dividends at year end.

Year-to-date expenses -- Labor expense is our highest store expense after cost of goods and one of the hardest to keep within budget. Labor expenses for 2013 were budgeted at 22.67% of sales; and year-to-date expenses are 22.13% of sales, just .54% under budget. Occupancy costs total 1.66%, .14% under budget. depreciation is right on target. Marketing expense is .74% of gross sales, also under budget. Board expenses are way under budget. Operating expenses totaled 1.37% of gross sales; just .02% under budget. Both phone expenses and bag supplies are running over budget this year. Administration expense is running way under budget at .79% of sales. Total store expenses are 28.07%, 1.36% under budget!

Other income totals $30,121 and helps bump up earnings before income tax to $690,498 for the year so far. Year-to-date earnings lag behind 2012 by .67 % or $26,400.

in balance sheet news, current assets increased 9.29% or $388,741 over the same period last year – mostly a cash increase. inventory is at $477,000, pretty level with the same period last year. inventory is “turning” 18.21 times per year, which is average for us. Current liabilities, mostly accounts payable, increased by 7.44% over same period last year and equity increased by 8.28%. Our ratios remain im-pressive! Current asset to liabilities is 6:1, meaning we have six times more assets than liabilities! We have a debt-to-equity ratio of .15 – that’s 15 cents of debt for every dollar of equity.

in summary, sales growth is picking up and store expenses are under budget. There was a reduction in the cost of goods, but it’s too soon to say if that will be a trend. We’re looking forward to the last and busiest quarter of the 2013 year!
