HOMESTAYAfter a one-week orientation phase, students live with a host family in Foumban for six weeks, followed by a seven-week stay with a host family in Buea.

CREDIT Students enroll in 16 semester credits through Carleton College.

LEADERSHIP Program director Nick Hockin, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Carleton College, has been directing the Arts and Culture program since 2007. In 2017, he will also direct Globalization and Sustainable Development in collaboration with local faculty and NGOs.

LANGUAGENo prior foreign language experience is required.

LOCATION The two primary locations of the program are Buea, an English-speaking town nestled in the foothills of Mt. Cameroon, home to the University of Buea; and Foumban, a French-speaking town in the highlands of Western Cameroon, a major center for traditional arts and culture in the region, and home to the Fine Arts Institute of Foumban. Travel-study destinations include the Grassfields, Limbe, and Bimbia.

INTERNSHIPDuring the apprenticeship/internship students study and work with an established NGO in a field that may include environmental science, education, social justice, land conservation, civil society, agriculture, child advocacy, sustainable alternative energy, women’s empowerment, public health, wildlife conservation, heritage/tourism, or micro-finance. Through observation of, interaction with, and participation in the life of local NGO staff/mentors, the apprenticeship/internship offers students practical hands-on experience.

The program integrates academic and experiential learning opportunities, with classes ranging from conventional university lectures and seminars to on-site lecture-demonstrations at local NGOs. Students develop a foundation for global citizenship while learning about traditional and contemporary Cameroonian lifestyles and customs.
