The Varkey Foundation launched the Global TeacherPrize to celebrate the best teachers around the world— those who inspire their students and thecommunities around them.
The Prize seeks to do for education what the NobelPrize has done for science, literature, and peace. Thefocus is to uplift the valuable contributions thatteachers make every day to establish a flourishingglobal society.
Sunny Varkey, Chairman of Varkey Foundation andcreator of the Global Teacher Prize said: "I want to drawattention to the achievements of teachers and theenormous impact they have on all of our lives. ABOUT THE GLOBAL TEACHER PRIZE
The Global Teacher Prize is a one million dollar award thatis given to an exceptional teacher who has made anoutstanding contribution to the profession.
The Varkey Foundation established the Prize in 2014 to raisethe stature of the teaching profession. We seek to celebratethe best teachers — those who inspire their students andcommunity around them. The Foundation believes thatvibrant education awakens and supports the full potential ofyoung people. The status of teachers in our cultures is key toour global future.
The award — the ‘Nobel Prize’ of teaching — operates underthe patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin RashidAl Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler ofDubai. The Prize underlines the importance of the teachingprofession and symbolises the fact that teachers throughoutthe world deserve to be recognised and celebrated. CRITERIA
Applicants for the Global Teacher Prize will be judged on a rigorous set of criteria aimed to identify anextraordinary teacher. The winner will be chosen by theprominent Global Teacher Prize Academy made up ofhead-teachers, educational experts, commentators,journalists, public officials, tech entrepreneurs, companydirectors and scientists from around the world.
THE ACADEMY WILL LOOK FOR EVIDENCE OF:
Recognition of a teacher’s achievements in the classroom and beyond from pupils, colleagues,head-teachers or members of the wider community.
Employing innovative and effective instructional practices.
Achieving demonstrable student learning outcomes in the classroom.
Ensuring children receive a values-based education that prepares them to be global citizens in a world where they will encounter people from many different religions, cultures and nationalities.
Achievements in the community beyond theclassroom that provide unique and distinguishedmodels of excellence for the teaching profession and others.
Encouraging others to join the teaching profession. Contributing to public debates on the teaching profession, whether through writing articles, blogs, media participation, social media campaigns, events or conferences.
