ABR® and AB-Carrousel® represent examples of our track record in developing client-oriented and sustainable water treatment solutions and technologies. We offer end-users and project partners a full range of services at any stage of a project. We design and implement efficient, easy-to-operate plants which can be tailored to your contract preference. Our operational services range from plant start-up through to operation and maintenance support. ABR® and AB-Carrousel® patents and trademarks have been registered worldwide.

ABR® and AB-Carrousel®ABR® and AB-Carrousel® technologies have been successfully used in a wide range of industrial applications worldwide.

Royal HaskoningDHV is a leading independent, international engineering consultancy service and technology provider, with more than 130 years of experience. Backed by the expertise and experience of 7,000 colleagues all over the world, our professionals combine global expertise with local knowledge to deliver a multidisciplinary range of consultancy services for the entire living environment from 100 offices in 35 countries.

Other major advantages of ABR® are: n higher energy efficiency as a

result of the improved aeration characteristics

n lower sludge discharge cost resulting from decreased sludge production

n higher surface loading rates are possible in the sedimentation tank, increasing the hydraulic capacity of the activated sludge system

n no complex internal devices or control required

n simple single-tank system

Anaerobic pre-treatment comparisonAnaerobic pre-treatment (UASB) also removes highly biodegradable components, thereby preventing sludge bulking. The advantages of theABR®, compared to UASB, are:n operates effectively at any

temperature, whereas a UASB should operate from 20ºC+

n a very fast start-up time of less than one week, whereas the UASB requires three months+

n less sensitive to operational upsets and toxicity

Applicationsn Where wastewater has high C/N

ratios and COD concentrations exceeding 1000 mg/l

n In the Pulp and Paper, Food, (Petro) Chemical and Pharmaceutical industries

n Where WWTPs are overloadedn For extension of hydraulic and load

capacityn As a compact extension of the

WWTP’s capacity when footprint is limited

n For biologically-enhanced H2S oxidation in combination with Carrousel®- a proven, winning solution!

ServicesServices rendered as alternative to supplying the ABR® as a technology package or turn-key solution:n feasibility studies for new or

revamped ABR possibilitiesn microscopic sludge analysisn lab tests or pilot trails to verify the

ABR applicabilityn design, engineering and

realisation supportn commissioning, start-up and

operational support

CarCONTM – advanced auto control systemThe CarCONTM is an automatic control system for Carrousel® series and includes the dissolved oxygen (DO) control of the ABR. The CarCON design is based on operational data and experience from hundreds of Carrousel® plants world-wide, resulting in an ever-improving control system. On-line measurements of flow rate, pH, DO and mixed liquor suspended solids used in the CarCON system control the setting for the aeration and the propulsors.**

Two Royal HaskoningDHV technologies - ABR® and Carrousel® - can be combined to form a robust treatment process for industrial wastewater - the AB-Carrousel®.

The Carrousel® collectionThe Carrousel® portfolio includesthe smaller Carrousel andCarrousel® 1000 products, as well asthe Carrousel® 2000 with enhancednutrient removal and Carrousel® 3000,featuring a smaller footprint.

The Carrousel® oxidation ditch is a looped-channel system, featuring a central dividing wall and a surface aerator, the Oxyrator®.

The Oxyrator® surface aerator series*The Oxyrator® is a low-speed vertical shaft surface aerator located at one or both ends of this wall - specially developed for application in the Carrousel® systems. Its function is three-fold, it:n adds oxygen to the wastewatern thoroughly mixes the wastewater

and the biomass (‘activated sludge’)

n creates and boosts flow circulating through the channels

Fine bubble aerationOperating an ABR® with fine bubble aeration is also an option, which is client- and vendor-specific. Types and execution range from plates, tubes and discs to duo-discs.

ABR® - Anti Bulking Reactor The biological ABR® process is a chemostat with a hydraulic residence time of a few hours. Only fast-growing bacteria remain which consume the highly biodegradable chemical oxygen demand (COD). Subsequently,

the removal of the remaining low biodegradable components can be removed in a much easier and effective manner. Reduced sulphur compounds - known to promote sludge bulking - are also removed.

Cause of bulking sludgeSludge bulking occurs when sludge fails to settle in the secondary sedimentation tanks after the purification process. The main cause of sludge bulking is the growth of filamentous bacteria. Filamentous micro-organisms grow in long strands that have greater volume and surface area than compact floc-forming micro-organisms and have, therefore, very slow settling velocities. Under certain process conditions, filamentous organisms predominate in the reactor, causing sludge bulking.

The Cause Effect without ABR®

The ChallengeSludge bulking is a common occurrence in industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), resulting in poor effluent quality. Attempts by operators to combat this by installing a selector/contact-tank often prove inadequate. Selectors are known to worsen sludge build-up in the pulp and paper industry in particular. Dosing with chemicals such as chlorine or aluminium chloride (AICI) is another solution but this increases operational costs and has negative environmental implications.

The ResponseThe Anti-Bulking Reactor - ABR® - quickly and permanently removes thecauses of bulking sludge: the highly biodegradable components such as fatty acids, saccharides and alcohols.

DesignThe ABR® is a mixed-tank unit with a carefully selected residence time and aeration capacity.
