NASA Delivery from NX - Ares
• Ares – successor of Space Shuttle (part of Constellation)
• Contract specified delivery of drawings/models in ProE
native format
• Strongly suggested contractors migrate and model in ProE
• ATK opted to stay with NX (actually migrated from Ideas to
NX), then translate models from NX to ProE at delivery
• Pro/E native format models translated from NX
• Following engagement with NASA
• Worked weekly with NASA along the path to determine
purpose and intent of models
• Light-weight models (JT) from NX

NASA Delivery from NX - SLS
• SLS – successor to cancellation of Constellation / Ares
brought on contract modification and changes:
• No models . . . will be translated into native ProE
• . . . shall deliver the 3D models of the components in
JT format
• PDR deliverables will be all model based (no
drawings)
• 3D annotated models may be use in lieu of
engineering drawings for the following . . .
• 3D annotated models used in lieu of an engineering
drawing shall be . . . delivered in JT format

ATK Approach for Model Based Enterprise (MBE)
• Continue to preach the vision
• Think big, produce several small wins
• Recent wins • Customer perspective has changed – cost challenged (rather
than technology focused)
• MBE how manufacturing/quality embracing
– Quality manager brought in to manage modeling group
– Several folks from manufacturing and quality have been
cross trained in modeling and now impacting design
• Offer JT2GO (free JT viewer) training to customers, partners
and suppliers
• Visit suppliers / machine shops to support annotated models
– Many issues revolve around using drawings as shop
traveler
– Develop relationships and resolve translation issues

PLM at ATK – What does the Future Hold?
• Continue transition from Teamcenter Enterprise and
Systems Engineering to Teamcenter Unified
• Continue down the path of common specifications
(requirements) for multiple programs
• Increase investment in systems engineering and
requirements management
• Improve knowledge management foundation
• Invest in the correlation of physical test data with
virtual simulations
• Improve the user experience of Teamcenter
• Engage with Siemens in future development of Active
Workspace – an intuitive, searchable, user friendly experience

Summary - What does this really mean?
• PDR SLS booster was delivered to NASA as a CAD model versus
hundreds of 2-D drawings
• Models are controlled and reused by many downstream users
• Standard parts solution for multi-CAD has been approved and moving
forward
• Required ~16 less cable modelers for the SLS booster design when
compared to comparable designs
• ~40% reduction of designers needed for delivery of SLS booster model
design because of reuse
• Reduction of ~9 months to SLS PDR design schedule
• Contractual change received from NASA to allow PMI-based model
delivery
• ATK has demonstrated that a customer preferred CAD tool doesn’t
necessarily translate into “clean geometry deliverables”
• JT format delivery has been preferred when working with customers
• The PLM journey at ATK continues
