GLOBAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS SUMMITDATE: 19TH JUNE 2006 VENUE: JO RICHARDSON COMMUNITY SCHOOL, CASTLE GREEN, GALE STREET, DAGENHAM, RM9 4UN

DEAR COLLEAGUE,

AS WE INVEST IN OUR SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS LIKE NEVER BEFORE WE NEED TO SHARE BEST PRACTICE, CHALLENGEOURSELVES AND REALLY MAKE THE LINK BETWEEN DESIGN AND BUILD AND TEACHING AND LEARNING.

THIS SUMMIT WILL HEAR FROM SPEAKERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND THE UK ON WHAT WORKED FOR THEM, WHATDIDN’T AND WHAT CAN WORK FOR US. IT WILL PROVIDE REAL CASE STUDIES OF HOW LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS CANHELP TO SUPPORT AND TRANSFORM TEACHING AND LEARNING.

AIMS OF THE SUMMIT• TO EXPLORE DEVELOPING TRENDS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING WORLDWIDE AND HOW THESE ARE SUPPORTED BY

THE DESIGN OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS• TO SHARE BEST PRACTICE • TO DEVELOP A COMMON LANGUAGE BETWEEN ALL PARTIES INVOLVED IN SCHOOL DESIGN AND BUILD• TO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS TO SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES • TO CAPTURE FINDINGS IN AN “IDEAS BOOK” TO BE PUBLISHED AND DISSEMINATED POST SUMMIT

THE DAY WILL INVOLVE DELEGATES IN CASE STUDY PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSION SESSIONS LED BY BOTH EDUCATORSAND SCHOOL DESIGNERS FROM ACROSS THE UK, EUROPE, AUSTRALIA AND THE USA.

THE SUMMIT WILL HOST THE UK LAUNCH OF THE OECD/ PEB COMPENDIUM OF LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS AS WELL AS THEOFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE BRITISH COUNCIL FOR SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTS (BCSE) – A FOUNDATION FOR LEARNINGENVIRONMENTS.

THE SEMINARSEACH SEMINAR WILL INCLUDE AT LEAST TWO CASE STUDY PRESENTATIONS BY A KEY THINKER, ARCHITECT OR EDUCATORAND FOCUS ON INNOVATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS FROM THE UK AND AROUND THE WORLD. THEMES WILL INCLUDESUSTAINABILITY, ICT, SEN, COMMUNITY USAGE, SMALL SCHOOLS, LEARNING IN OTHER SETTINGS AND REFURBISHMENT.PARTICIPANTS ARE ABLE TO ATTEND TWO SEMINARS EACH; ONE IN THE MORNING AND ONE IN THE AFTERNOON.

A TOUR OF THE NEWLY OPENED JO RICHARDSON COMMUNITY SCHOOL WILL BE HELD AFTER THE SEMINARS FOLLOWEDBY A LAUNCH RECEPTION FOR THE BCSE.

THE SUMMIT RECEPTION WILL FINISH AT APPROXIMATELY 18.15.

SEMINAR 4• ST PANCRAS PRIMARY SCHOOL, EAST SUSSEX

MARIA COWLER (H)Using the construction of their eco-friendly school as a development tool for teaching and learning, pupils are producing a DVD about the design and construction process. Managing their own learning and linking the project to the curriculum has stimulated children’s creativity, independence and willingness to learn.

• A GLOBAL VIEWJOHN WALDRON (A)John has brought a wealth of global knowledge to the British school-design sector through his extensive travels in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australasia and the Americas.

SEMINAR 5• NEW VISIONS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, NEW YORK, USA

ADAM RUBINAn education reform organisation dedicated to improving the quality of education in New York’s public schools. Working with the public and private sectors to energise teaching and learning and raise the level of student achievement. Since 1993 it has created innovative small schools that combine personalised learning environments with rigorous educational programmes.

• ARK (ABSOLUTE RETURN FOR KIDS)JAY ALTMANARK Education was created in 2004 to help break the cycle of underachievement by providing high quality education to children in economically and socially disadvantaged communities in the UK. ARK Education is now working with existing schoolsand communities to develop and introduce appropriate strategies for new Academies.

SEMINAR 6• PLAYING FOR SUCCESS

REX HALLThis DfES funded initiative is establishing out of school hours study support centres at top football clubs and other sports grounds. Focusing on raising literacy, numeracy and ICTstandards amongst KS2 and 3 pupils, PfS uses the environ-ment and medium of sport as motivational and curriculum tools.

SEMINAR 1• RAHOLT SECONDARY SCHOOL, EIDSVOLL, NORWAY

KRISTIN JARMUND (A)In a rural landscape a square one storey glass pavilion raised ona platform 50 cm above the ground “floats” above the surroundingfields. The inside areas are like a village; no corridors, but main streets, narrow paths, open squares, lightwells and integrated gardens.

• KINGS AVENUE PRIMARY SCHOOL, LAMBETH, LONDONSTEVEN PIDWILL (A)Two schools have been remodelled and amalgamated to create a light and uplifting centre of excellence for visually impaired children. Additional funds awarded by Sport Englandhave transformed the school out of hours.

SEMINAR 2• DRUK WHITE LOTUS SCHOOL, LADAKH, INDIA

JONATHAN ROSE (A)Winner of the 2002 World Architecture Award for Best Green Building and Best Education Building, the school was started at the request of the people of Ladakh, high in the Indian Himalayas. The school helps maintain their rich cultural traditions, based on Tibetan Buddhism, while equipping their children for a life in the 21st century.

• KINGSMEAD PRIMARY SCHOOL, CHESHIREDAVID NOBLE (A)From its orientation on the site to the selection of natural materialsand the use of natural ventilation and daylighting techniques, every aspect of Kingsmead has been conceived with the aim of creating an exemplar of sustainable design and construction.

SEMINAR 3• MONKSEATON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL

PAUL KELLEY (H)Monkseaton has partnered with Microsoft and the Open Universityto provide a range of innovations for the benefit of students and teachers. Designed to include as few doors as possible.

• KINGSDALE SCHOOL, SOUTHWARK, LONDONALEX DE RIKJE (A)Following a School Works participatory design process, Kingsdale was transformed by a refurbishment that includes a courtyard covered by an ETFE roof and a “pod” auditorium with a separate entrance for community use. The improved environment has undoubtedly contributed to an impressive rise in attainment.

• KIDS’ CITY, LONDONJACKIE NUNNS Providing out of school activities to children as well as employment and training opportunities for teenagers and adults in areas of high unemployment, this charity aims to advance the education of school age children and develop their physical, mental and spiritual capacities whilst harnessing the skills, values and energy of the local community.

• BOLTON TIC, BOLTONPAUL ABBOTTBolton TIC is the UK's first Junior Incubator. It is somewhere between a school, a university research lab, a training centre and a factory. Young people can make their technical dreams come true, by designing and making just about anything, with equipment beyond the reach of schools.

SEMINAR 7• HELLERUP SCHOOL, COPENHAGEN, DENMARK

KNUD NORDENTOFT (H)Largely open plan with a stunning series of wooden central staircases that double as seating and performance spaces, Hellerup has been created for pupils of 6-16 years of age. Anumber of “home bases” complete with kitchen areas and chill-out spaces form relaxed learning environments where students follow a project based curriculum.

• ACADEMY OF ST FRANCIS OF ASSISI, LIVERPOOLSTEVE MCELROY (VP)A new joint faith Academy specialising in the environment and equipped with a state-of-the art ICT system including a virtual teaching and learning environment and CC3, a network system designed specifically for schools. The Academy’s building utilises solar energy for hot water heating and rainwater harvest-ing for re-use in sanitary appliances.

SEMINAR 8• COWGATE NURSERY SCHOOL, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND

LYNN MCNAIR (H)ALLAN MURRAY (A)Situated in a tight site in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, the bold design of this 60 place nursery provides a spatially exciting environment for the teaching and development of young children and exploits existing level changes across the site to provide creative play features.

• HAMPDEN GURNEY PRIMARY SCHOOL, LONDONTONY MCGUIRK (A)Funded by the creation of a housing development on the old school's playground, a ‘vertical school’ provides an exciting solution to a tight urban site. The space has been replaced by six open-air play decks providing safe weather-proof play and territory adjacent to classrooms on each level, with the children ‘growing up’ the school.

SEMINAR 9• DARLINGTON EDUCATIONAL VILLAGE

DAME DELA SMITHThis pioneering Education Village is rethinking the concept of school. Opened in April this year it combines a secondary, a primary and a special school catering for 1400 pupils from nursery age through to adulthood. Workforce remodeling is high on the agenda as three schools, children’s services and para-professionals are brought together under one roof.

• VOLKSSCHULE NATORPGASSE VIENNA, AUSTRIAANDREAS TREUSCH (A)A striking renovation of a primary school set in an inner city site, this school shows how to re-design and revitalise a protected building for a modern age. The extension of the building is integrated in the urban space by creating a new, independent and contained structure, seemingly floating on top of the existing building.

SEMINAR 10• LEARNING THROUGH LANDSCAPES

MARY JACKSONWhilst school grounds make up a large proportion of the school estate they are rarely prioritised by designers. Drawing on examples of school grounds in the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the USA this seminar will examine the importance of this environment, its potential for learning and play and current trends in design.

• COMMUNITY REGENERATIONPROFESSOR SIR COLIN STANSFIELD SMITH (A)This seminar will examine the role that schools can play in the regeneration of their communities, looking at particular examples including work in Hackney.
