DESCRIPTION

In advance of the 2010 Summit in London, YouGov conducted the One Young World Global Youth Study 2010. With more than 15,000 young respondents from all around the world, it is one of the biggest studies of global youth opinion ever undertaken. The findings helped identify the six main themes of One Young World 2010 and 2011.

Religion

Organised religion plays a strong role in bettering my community 5

Relations between different religions in my country are good 4,5,8,9,16

I see organised religion operating more like multinational corporations than spiritual guides

I would like to know more about other religions than I currently do

Religion has too much influence on society in my country

Organised religion should play a bigger role in resolving the key issues facing humanity today, such as the environment and global poverty

There are many religions that I do not trust

My faith is a guiding force in my life

More interfaith dialogue would resolve many issues of religious violence in the world 4,5,8,15,16

Religions that do not promote enlightened views such as tolerance and respect of all humanity must be challenged

All faiths should focus on their similarities, not their differences

Extremism in all religions must be challenged

In the last twelve months I have been personally involved in political and/or civic engagement beyond just the act of voting, 2,3-5,8,9,13,15-18 (for example I took

part in a political meeting, demonstration or online discussion)

I would be happy to give up some personal freedoms in return for a more prosperous life 2-6,8,9,13-16,18

I feel very positive about my country's future 4,5,8,9,15,16

The issue of world poverty can be greatly improved in my lifetime 4,5,8,9,15,16

The issue of poverty in my country can be solved during my lifetime 4,5,8,15,16

I feel as though I have no control over the future of my country

My country needs firm leadership 1,7,10-12,15,17

Politicians should focus on improving the economy above all else

People need to be protected from unregulated capitalism

Methods of scrutinising public servants, including politicians, in my country are not strong enough 5

Politics in my country needs major reform 5

All countries should strive for full and free democracy 5

Media

I would trust my social network as a source of information more than I trust current news sites 5

Online social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter will drive politics in my country in the future 2-5,8,9,13,15,16,18

International news media offer a more balanced view than media in my own country 5

I am concerned that by using websites such as Facebook I am losing my privacy 5

News media are a critical way of scrutinising what public servants such as politicians do in my country 5

Journalists need greater freedoms in my country to scrutinise people in the public eye and hold them to account 5

Limits should be in place to ensure major media (such as TV channels and newspapers) do not become owned by only a very few number of people 5

Online social media networks will open and change the global media landscape in the next 5 years beyond recognition

The internet has opened up greater business prospects for people of my age 4,5,9,15
