GLOBAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY AGREEMENT

It was great to celebrate the beginning of a new school year with Global Ed. families last Friday night at our “Did You Know?” event where children shared a bit about what they’ve learned so far about our community. We also had a chance to speak to parents about the importance of community within the Global Ed. program. As teachers, we have dedicated ourselves to the philosophical foundation of the Global Ed. program. We know that the parents have also made a carefully considered choice in placing their children with us to learn and grow. We want to honor that commitment by teachers and families by clearly stating the components of our program. Attached to this newsletter you will find a copy of the Global Education Community Agreement. This agreement was also sent home in last week’s Friday envelope. If you haven’t had a chance to review the document yet, please take this opportunity to read the community agreement, sign it, and return it to school with your child. We strengthen our focus and effectiveness when we share an understanding of who

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S ATTENDANCE!

The Solana Beach School District maintains a strict attendance policy. If a student is absent for ten consecutive days, the child is dropped from Skyline’s attendance roster. In the fourth through sixth grade program, students with ten consecutive absences are reenrolled upon their return to school. This is not the case however in the Global Education program. If a child in Global Ed. is absent for ten consecutive days and is subsequently dropped from the school roster, his/her spot in the program will be filled by the next child on the waiting list. We maintain a waiting list each academic year after the lottery is conducted. Please be mindful of the school district’s attendance policy and how it specifically affects those in Global Ed. when planning extra vacations

HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL Sunday October 25, 11-4 pm Solana Vista

The Halloween Carnival is a local, annual favorite event. The money raised by this one-day only event provides us with Wheel enrichment classes. Our class booths need to be run by adult volunteers from each class. We encourage you to say YES when your child’s room parents call looking for volunteers to help. Another way to participate (besides spending money at the carnival!) is to donate something to the bake sale. Please try to attend!

SKYLINE HALLOWEEN PARADE Friday October 30, at 9:00 am

All students are welcome to come to school in their costumes. There will be a costume parade at 9 am on the school field. Children may wear their costumes during the school day if they are comfortable, and if the costumes do not interfere with the learning in the class. If a costume does not meet these criteria, please send in

A WORD ABOUT BIRTHDAYS

Few events in a child’s life are as eagerly anticipated as a birthday. Birthdays are so important to young children! The parties and celebrations that surround birthdays carry strong social currency in the world of a child. With this in mind, we’d like to remind parents that birthday invitations and thank you notes may not be handed out at school. When planning a birthday party consider the feelings of others who may feel excluded. The children inevitably talk about birthday celebrations and not being invited to a party may have social ramifications for those excluded. Please consider inviting some reasonable subset of children to your child’s party. We’d like to keep the happy in happy birthday! Also, we enjoy celebrating your child’s birthday at school. Check with your child’s teacher to find out a good time to share treats with the class. It is important that the teachers be notified before the treats are brought in so plans may be made. We also appreciate if the treats can be hand held as we are not set up with knives, forks, and plates. Thanks so much for your understanding!

TENT CITY DAY IS ALMOST HERE! We are still looking for parents to set up tents on the morning of October 16th to help us create a “tent city” on the kindergarten playground. If you have a tent we may borrow and are available to set it up on the 16th, please

SHARING SCHEDULE

• September 28-October 2: Open Sharing • October 5-9: Interview a parent about his/her job • October 12-16: Open Sharing • October 19-23: Share a favorite recipe • October 26-October 30: Open Sharing • November 2-6: Write a letter to be mailed and design a stamp

INTERVIEW A PARENT ABOUT HIS/HER JOB (October 5-9) We are learning that there are many important jobs in our community. Your child is to interview you about your occupation for this week’s sharing. A questionnaire will be sent home to guide your child’s questioning in the interview and to provide a place to record your answers. Your child should be the “expert” about you and your work when his/her sharing day rolls around.

FAVORITE RECIPE SHARING (October19-23)

Your child will need to locate a favorite family recipe and copy it down for sharing. Your child can prepare for his/her sharing by practicing reading the ingredients and steps included in the recipe and by describing why s/he selected this recipe to share. Check with your child’s teacher to see if this sharing also includes preparing the recipe for a class test taste

WRITE A LETTER TO BE MAILED AND DESIGN A STAMP (November 2-6)

We are continuing to study how our community works and to this end we will soon establish a temporary Global Ed. Post Office. Your child
