Lots of planning takes place in order to deliver enriching and engaging content. But does the learning finish when the bell goes at the end of the day? Parents often ask their children, “What did you learn at school today?”, only to receive a monotone mumbled response of “nothing”. Healthy learning habits are developed when parents, teachers and students work in harmony together. At the start of the school term, parents should receive a term overview form the class teacher, outlining the content to be studied throughout the term. It is beneficial for parents to read this and ask their children questions, for example “I see you’re learning about planets and space. Tell me about that.” Your child will benefit from opportunities to discover and build on their understandings. Going to the library or doing research at home can encourage your child to become a curious explorer and will allow them to develop ideas to share with their classmates back at school. As a parent, enthusiasm is key. If you’re excited about what they are learning they will be too! Engage in their interests, play to their strengths and talents. Let your child know that you are noticing their growth and improvement. Instead of asking the question, “What did you learn at school today?” Next time try asking, “What can you TEACH me about today?” Students don’t want to give a longwinded account of the day, but they would enjoy playing ‘teacher’ and involve you in their learning. “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” – Benjamin Franklin.

Promoting Healthy Learning Habits -

(Beyond the Classroom) Each day, teachers strive to encourage and challenge the students they teach. It is beneficial for parents to read this and ask their children questions, for example – “I see you’re learning about planets and space. Tell me about that.” Your child will benefit from opportunities to discover and build on their understandings. Going to the library or doing research at home can encourage your child to become a curious explorer and will allow them to develop ideas to share with their classmates back at school. As a parent, enthusiasm is key. If you’re excited about what they are learning – they will be too!

Writers of the Week Congratulations to our writers of the week from the end of term 2. Such fabulous writing pieces are being created across the school, inspiring us all. “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!” I said with excitement as I ran down the stairs to wake up my Auntie Jar, my parents and my two sisters. I quickly opened a present from Auntie Jar. It was a jumper with printed wings and cool goggles attached to the hoodie. My friend came over for a playdate. We were playing cops and robbers on the playground outside my house. I was a robber and was running away from him. “AHHHHHHH!” I screamed as I fell from the tallest part of the playground. “OLIVER!” Just before I hit the ground, I started to hover in the air. “Oliver, why do you have wings?” my friend asked in shock and confusion. The wings of my jumper were not printed on. They were real! “Cool!” said my friend. I did what everyone would do when they get powers. A TEST RUN!! So I flew to a building near my house. My friend was filming me. I went to the top to jump off and fly but just before I did, the building went up in flames. “BOOM!!” A little explosion went. I flew down to my friend and he was so scared. “RUN!!!” my friend said in a squeaky and scared voice. At that time, my friend forgot I had wings because he was too scared. “AAHHHHHHHHH!!” screamed some people inside the BURNING BUILDING. “I have got to save them!” I said heroically. “HOW?” said my friend in confusion. “I HAVE WINGS!” So I flew up to a window and in a matter of about 5 minutes I think I got everyone. “HELP! PLEASE! MY DAUGHTER IS IN THERE!!!”

By Oliver Year 5, Room 2 “BANG! Oww! What happened?” Jimmy said weakly. “Aaahh! Where am I?” he said in his mind, confused. He sees that he is in a car. He sees that he is upside down. Then he sees something or somebody’s legs walking past the car. Then he wakes up in a hospital. He wonders to himself, “Was it a dream? Or not?” Two weeks have passed since the accident. Then one day he went to get his post from the mailbox. He found a letter and it said, “It was all not a dream, Jimmy!” Then he saw a bit that he had missed. It said to go to the back of your house at 2.55pm on the 13th June 2019. He checked his watch. It was the 13th June 2019 and it just turned 2.53pm! He rushed and rushed and when he got there it just turned 2.55pm. Then he saw another note. This one said, “You must go to New York NOW! YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE! He went to the airport and booked his flight and went to New York. On his plane ride he found another note telling him to go to the Empire State Building when he got there. Five hours later when he landed, he went straight to the Empire State Building. When he got there, he saw the exact same legs he saw when he was in the car crash. The legs were in a dark alley. “Wh-Who is th-there?” he stuttered. It was a he. He had a black, dark hoodie on and black pants. The hoodie was covering his face. Then he took off his hoodie…..

Class presentation. For my speech I showed the class my dirt bike. My dad brought it from NSW, where it is kept on the farm. I had to wear my safety gear. I had a chance to show them how to ride the dirt bike. I rode the dirt bike around the oval.

Monarto Zoo Gold Coin Donations Congratulations to everyone who gave a gold coin on last term’s casual day. People enjoyed coming to school dressed casually and Glenelg Primary raised $799.45. Money raised from this casual day went to Monarto Zoo as decided by the Kids’ Council.

Congratulations Indy Maher has made the U/14 Basketball Team to travel to Ballarat for the Nationals. She is a first year U/14 representative. Under 14 National Club Championships are to be held in Ballarat from 30 September to 5 October 2019. This Championship brings the top 24 teams from across Australia to compete for the Michele Timms Championship Trophy and has been pivotal in helping players establish strong pathways to higher levels of competition. We and wish you well in representing our State. This is a wonderful opportunity to play against the best Under 14 players in Australia.

Hutt Street Centre The Glenelg school community has contributed to this charity for the last four years. We hope this year will be bigger and better than ever. Donations of canned and non-perishable goods and toiletries (as per the wish list sent home) for the cause can be made to your classroom or straight to the library by the end of next week – Friday 9th August. On this day we will be ‘walking a mile in their shoes’ on the Glenelg Football Oval after lunch to generate an understanding of the cause. At this stage we do not have a lot of food, so please get behind the cause and help us to top our highest tally of 1800 items.

SA Water

SA water “Fatbergs” are gathering in your sewer to spoil your way of life. That is what will happen if you flush “wet wipes” down your toilet. This is one of the many facts we learnt when we visited SA Water’s sustainability workshop last term. When we had done all the smaller activities about what water is okay to drink and about where our water comes from, they moved us to the final activity called the sustainability challenge. This was about making a model of a city that is ultimately sustainable, basically we had to make a model of a city that included different water sources, pipes and sewer networks, jobs, homes, entertainment, education and health facilities, emergency services, infrastructure and renewable energy supplies. We would like to thank SA Water for the great experience and we would be glad to do something like it again. Flynn and Mac (Room 6)

Mini - fest In 2019, year 3 & 4 students were invited to be a part of the Junior Choir. In semester 1, we had over 100 students join to form our biggest Junior Choir yet. The highlight of the first semester was the Holdfast Partnership Junior Choir MINI-FEST, which was held at Paringa Park Primary School on Thursday 4th July in week 10 of last term. Together with the Junior Choirs from Paringa Park, Warradale, St. Leonards and Brighton, Glenelg Primary School joined to form a combined choir of about 300 strong to sing various songs including Wonder, Rockin’ Robin, Pompeii, It Don’t Mean a Thing and I am Australian. We had so much fun and it was a great end to the first two terms of learning in Junior Choir. We hope that you enjoyed the show if you were lucky enough to attend. Thank you to Mrs Robinson and Mr Rose for preparing us for this event.

Senior Choir visit Dunbar Tce Kindy

The Senior Choir made the Dunbar Tce Kindy their classroom in week 10 Term 2! Their young audience clapped and danced along to the songs ‘When I grow Up’ and ‘Get On Your Feet’. It was a wonderful opportunity for our hosts, soloists and choreography leaders to build their confidence. We enjoyed joining the kindy students in a rendition of ‘Waddily Archer’ and even fulfilled a request for ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’! The choir was such a hit they’ve been invited to return in term 4. We ended the visit by reading stories to each of the children. As the choir prepares for their big event of performing at the Festival Theatre this term, a big CONGRATULATIONS to soloists Anique, Asia, Lily and choreography leaders Aashna and Vinayika for being selected after an audition process to perform at the Festival of Music this year. Well done, we are very proud of you.

Soccer Uniforms The P&F presented to the Governing Council at their last meeting that the soccer teams did not have a uniform and whilst they wear their school tops, there is often a mixture of tops and the teams do not have the sporting look we would like to portray of Glenelg Primary School. We have ordered a short term solution for the soccer teams to support their image. We are wondering if any families or work places may have a business that would be interested in sponsoring the soccer teams for 2020 and beyond. New tops would be ordered and the company name would be displayed on the soccer top to advertise the sponsorship. Please contact Rae if you know of a group that may be interested in the sponsorship.

External School Review In week 6 last term you may remember that there was an independent group that came to review what we were doing in our school and the directions recommended for us for the next three years to maintain the growth we are achieving and to further improve. The full final report from this group has now been published and can be found on the school web page: https://www.glenelgps.sa.edu.au/our-community/planning-reporting/ if you would like to read it. The summary of the outcomes are:

Volunteers As you are aware the new Department for Education Volunteers Policy is now in place at Glenelg Primary. This means that only people who have completed the training can now be in classrooms or volunteering around the school after 9.05am. We sincerely thank all of the parents and grandparents who have completed the training and are now assisting in this manner. The next volunteer induction program is on August 28th at 2pm and 6pm. Full details of the requirements needed can be found on the webpage at : https://www.glenelgps.sa.edu.au/for-parents/volunteers/ This training can be undertaken online or by attending one of the sessions. We thank everyone for their participation and support of this department policy.

Excursion/Incursion payments Thank you to parents for your support of our payment system and payments made by the due date as suggested by the school and endorsed by Governing Council. This has meant that teachers have a clear picture of who is to attending Music Aviva this week and arrangements can easily be made for other learning for students who are not attending. Please remember that you can always talk to leadership about alternate ways of paying at any time to ensure your child is included in any event. As has happened for this school event, we will not be accepting late payments for any excursions or outings in future. Please check the due date on the information provided and ensure that your payment has been received by that date.

Social Media At last Friday’s Kids’ Council meeting, an issue was raised by students concerning social media. Students are very concerned that some students are using social media, in particular ‘Tick Tock’ and placing photos and videos online in their school uniforms. The safety concerns for this are that they can be easily identified as a student of this school and this means their location and identification can be made. We ask all parents to talk to their children about this and the need for vigilance when using social media. Most apps do have an age attached to them but we know many families do not worry about this. Class teachers have spoken to students about cyber safety but we need a joint effort on this to ensure the online safety of our students.

Canteen It has now been organised that money owing from an emergency lunch order can now be paid on QKR if this suits your needs. The Emergency Lunch payment option is not to be used for placing an emergency lunch, this needs to be done by phone call to the canteen on 8295 3746.

Bollards

A big thank you to Anthony Fischer for his continued pursuing of both the local member for this area and the Department of Transport. Concerns have always been expressed regarding the safety of children in our yard if a car were to take the corner wide onto Diagonal Road and come into the yard. This has happened twice in recent years on weekends and we were concerned for children. Anthony has pleaded the school case for several years to all who would listen and we are pleased to say that with the help of Hon Stephen Paterson MP, we now can ensure the safety of children on the Diagonal Road side of the school yard.
