Dates to Remember

Dear parents, The Quality of Our Students. In these times of reality TV shows, you could be forgiven if you formed the impression from some of them that the human race is ‘in big trouble’! I visited a Year 6 class and asked them to finish three sentences, which began: In life I want to………………… The most important thing about people is…………………….. and When people think about me in years to come I want them to think…………………………………………………. The responses from the students are below. I would like to say a special thank you to Jerome, Arsalan and Gabi who were kind enough to compile all of the responses. In life I want to:

• travel and explore the world • change • be smart • be someone • be something • have a good career • be a midwife and a professional

soccer player • become a smart person and get a

good job • become a scientist so i could find a

cure for cancer • learn about life • become an engineer • be successful • be a youtuber or an actor

• be a professional soccer player • make my Mum proud by getting a

great job, money, house, family and more

• be a part of the 000 services • do good things eg: donate to charity

or help my local community also l want to be a youtuber so l can earn money to donate

• be a mechanic • work hard • be successful • see and go to amazing places • be successful and graduate high

school then l want to be a youtuber • have a real career

The most important thing about people is:

• their heart. • to laugh • kindness happiness and niceness • how they look at life • their personality

• to standout • their mindset and looks • if people help the poor and elders • the way they treat each other and

how they treat themselves.

• I want people to think of me as their extra friend

• if they are caring and warm-hearted • how kind their heart is • Personality, kindness, education • What they think inside • Personality • How you treat people • their personality and how they treat

you

• their personality not their looks or money it is about personality

• everyone is different, so you should not treat them different to anyone else

• respect and loyalty • Their personality • their personality • our community • that we should standout

When people think about me in years to come I want them to think:

• how kind and caring people can be • of me as family and a great and funny

friend. • that I was funny • that I am smart, kind and helpful • I did something • I was a fun friendly person and I was

helpful and good person. • I was the greatest • how grateful I was and how nice and

helpful I was in games. • I am a kind person who would help

anyone • how I had made a difference in the

world. • About my manners, education and

personality • That I was a good person and a role

model. • About the achievements I’ve made. • A nice and fun guy. • of me as the clumsy, funny and silly

role model towards younger students that will come in years that don’t go to school.

• l am the greatest.

Thank you to all of the students for sharing their thoughts. We will soon be sharing other information about our students’ thoughts expressed in the ‘Tell Them from Me’ survey. Camps 2019 – Mrs France is the overall coordinator of our annual camping programs. She has been to tell me that the number of opportunities to enrol students in the camps is getting less each day. At this date we have the following places left

• Yr 3 – 12 places • Yrs 4&5 – 10 places • Yr 6- 11 places

If you wish to have your child included, please get your note to school asap.

Chickens – We have some new ‘chooks’ at school. I would like to thank the Garcia family – with students , Shantelle, Gabrielle, Tyrese and Kenji who were kind enough to arrange a donation of the chickens! Interrelate Program – A special note will soon go home to senior students. Part of the current PDHPE syllabus requires the teaching of topics that parents may like to know a little more about before they are taught. There is a special group of people who present a program that will cover some of the topics and these will be outlined on the note. I strongly encourage parents to look carefully at the note that will outline the ‘Interrelate program’ and the benefits students will gain. Any questions can be directed to your child’s teacher or to Mrs Colefax. ‘Mr Meaney my child was just hit by a car in the car park.’ – this is a sentence I hope I never hear spoken by any parent! At present we do have children and parents walking through the car park. This has to stop. Parents accessing the OHSC centre should park cars OUTSIDE the school and walk children in through the pedestrian gate (near the office). Similarly, when collecting children in the afternoon the same process should be followed up to 4pm when it is reasonably safe to assume cars can enter the area without any students being around. Help us to help you keep your kids safe. Swim School – Mrs Leyte is currently beginning the organisation for sending notes home about our water safety and learning to swim scheme. Spaces will be held for all students who were assessed at our swimming carnival earlier this year. We expect all parents who receive a note as a result of their children not meeting basic water safety guidelines will accept the offer and show their concern for the safety of their children by having them participate – or provide a valid reason why their child should not be included. Have a good week, Doug Meaney Principal

Walk Safely To School Day

Next Friday, May 17, our school will be participating in ‘Walk Safely to School Day’. Now in its 20th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. http://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/

Each class will spend some time discussing the importance of walking safely to school. They will then work on a project to share with the rest of the school. Projects may include creating a slideshow, brochure, website, artwork, poster or recording of a role play. Classes are encouraged to be as creative as possible. These projects will be shared among classes and will become a resource bank for students, teachers and families.

We encourage all families to become involved in ‘Walk Safely to School Day’. Some ways in which you can participate with your child is to:

• Walk to school on Friday, May 17 and have a conversation about the different things you are doing whilst walking to stay safe

o Holding hands across the road o Checking cars are not entering or exiting driveways before walking across them o Using a pedestrian crossing where one is available o Walking on the footpath rather than the road

• Look at the ‘Walk Safely to School’ website with your child at home and discuss some of the resources provided http://www.walk.com.au/WSTSD/

• Complete the colouring page together whilst discussing ways to walk safely to school • Work on your own project at home. Please feel free to share these with Mr Bamford or Mrs Bateup

once they are complete. We look forward to sharing some of the wonderful projects in coming weeks.

Playgroup – Week 2 We would like to welcome back our Playgroup Families for another fun term of activities. The children were excited to see one another, and it was nice to share what each family had done together in the holidays.

As this Sunday, May 12th, is Mother’s Day, the children worked on some special cards and artworks for their mums. Each of the children expressed pride in their work and were excited that they had a special gift to share with their loved ones on Sunday.

During group time we read a story called ‘Piglet and Mama’. It was a story about all of the things Piglet enjoyed doing with her Mama. Following on from this the children shared what their favourite thing to do with their mums was.

Malek shared that his favourite thing to do with his mum was to play with his baby brother Amir. Natalia said her favourite thing to do with her mum was cuddling her. Jaweria was a little shy, so her mum shared that one of their favourite things to do was to colour in together.

We invite all families to join us at Playgroup this term. Playgroup runs on Monday between 2-3pm and Wednesday between 9-10am. All families in our community are welcome and we hope to see some new families join us soon. There is no cost involved. Meet Mrs Bateup in the Playgroup Room. If you are unsure, please ask in the front office.
