I would like to welcome you all back to what I envision to be another exciting and eventful year. It is particularly special because 2017 is the year we become 140 years young. More information regarding celebratory events will follow throughout the year. I welcome our new families and students to what we believe is a wonderful community centred school. I urge everyone to be as proactive as possible in the learning and activities available at Glenbrook School. Your child’s time at primary school goes by so very quickly and it is a privilege when you can participate in it. A special welcome to new staff members Mrs Nicky Hobman who will assist with release time, and Ms Rhema Jakeman who will lead Kapa Haka and Te Reo Maori across our school. I would also like to welcome Mrs Rochelle Keown who increases her role this year from Reading Recovery to leading our Spiral of Inquiry practice with all our teaching staff. This year we have high aspirations and expectations from all our staff and students. We want to build on the excellent work and vision of our school. Our main focus will be collaboration and collective responsibility for all. As usual our school values of Whakawhanaungatanga, Ako, Mana and Manaakitanga will be prevalent in all that we do. Writing will be a key curriculum focus as our data and Community of Learners informs us. But above all, we will deliver a balanced, holistic curriculum where all students are partners in learning and so that your child can realise their potential. Again we hit the ground running with our School Gala on March 11th and a range of activities. Remember to add the events into your diary and check our Facebook page for regular updates. Again, welcome Glenbrookians to 2017. I look forward to our year together. Your Principal, Miss Lysandra Stuart Meet the Teacher: We encourage all parents to attend our meet the Teacher on Thursday 9th. It will begin at 6.00 – 7.00. This is a chance to come and meet the staff of Glenbrook School. Please note that this is not a reporting session, but rather an informal meet and greet. There will be a sausage sizzle available and children are welcome to attend and swim. Child Centered Conferences These will be held on Wednesday 1st March 12.30 – 6.30 and Thursday 2nd March 3.30 – 7.00. School will close at 12.00pm on Wednesday 1st March. Start of School School begins at 9.00am. We would like the children to be at school between 8.30 – 8.50 am. This gives them a chance to settle in before their day begins. It can be disruptive to the class if children are coming into a class that has already begun. End of Day Process Teachers will accompany their children to the top court (outside the hall) where they must be collected by an adult or will be dismissed to their bus line. School finishes at 2.50pm. No students are allowed to walk to the carpark unassisted by an adult. Our Bell Times are…. 9.00 – 11.00 Morning Block and Brain Food 11.00 – 11.30 Interval 11.30 – 1.00 Middle Block 1.00 – 1.40 Lunch 1.40 – 2.50 Afternoon Block School Assemblies: Glenbrook School Assemblies will be on Fridays. Assemblies start at 2.00pm. We encourage parents to attend. A school assembly is a time for the school and community to come together and celebrate the week, share information and enjoy being Glenbrook School. We welcome and encourage you to come into our assemblies, bring the whanau and listen to what our tamariki (children) have done throughout the week. Each week a different class will be leading assembly. Kapa Haka: Kapa Haka is an integral part of Glenbrook School and our bicultural ethos. Miss Stuart and Whaea Rhema will continue to lead Kapa Haka. All students participate in our Kapa Haka hour which will be on a Monday afternoon in 2017. A specialist Kapa Haka group will be formed over the next week for those students interested in performing at the annual Franklin Cultural Festival. This will be held at Pukekohe Intermediate on 1st April. If you are able to assist, please let Miss Stuart know.

Whakawhanaungatanga: Ako: Manaakitanga: Mana: At Glenbrook School we work At Glenbrook School At Glenbrook School we care At Glenbrook School we are as a community together we are all learners for and value people and the world. respectful, strong and resilient.

Toe by Toe: Toe by Toe is a 1:1 sounds and phonics programme which makes a big difference to many students in our school. A big thank you to Mrs Kathy Clarke for continuing to assist. PLEASE if there are any parents who can volunteer time each week to this programme we would love to hear from you. Students who participate in this programme, have many positive outcomes. School Gardens: We are looking for volunteers, parents or friends who can come and assist our students with their gardening skills. Each team has an area they manage and we would very much like some guidance with our flower and vegetable gardens. Whanau Leaders: Whanau Leaders and our houses are a traditional and integral part of Glenbrook School. Your 2017 Whanau Leaders are:

Kahikatea Kyla Tong William Lomas

Taraire Mia Sargent Awhina Row

Totara Elise Maddock Jordyn Hobman

Puriri Charlize Aicken Emma Howell-Walmsley

Communication Often unnecessary worry can be caused by unfounded rumour or misinterpretation. If the issue is whole school please come and see the Principal. If you ever have classroom concerns, please contact the classroom teacher in the first instance. If the matter is not resolved satisfactorily you should then contact:

The Associate Principal, Ms Ally Davidson if your child is in years 5-8 or the Team Leader Mrs Jessica Simons if your child is in years 0 – 4. For special needs concerns please contact Miss Hannah Hubers our SENCO.

The Principal

The Board of Trustees ….. IN THAT ORDER please. Note:

1. Our school defines a concern as something expressed verbally and a complaint as written. Anonymous complaints are ignored.

2. Parents are not allowed to address a concern directly with a child.

Swimming Please put your child’s named togs, rash shirt and a towel in a waterproof bag in their school bag everyday. Classes will swim regularly while the pool remains warm. No Hat, No Play:

Children without a school sunhat will not be allowed to play outside beyond the sunshade for juniors or multi-purpose shed for seniors. School hats can be purchased from the office. Please ensure your child has sunblock on before coming to school. Classes have sunblock that can be applied at school if needed. Stationery Thank you to those families who have paid their stationery payments. All stationery payments are due by Friday 10th February 2017. Years 0-4 : Your stationary payment is $70 per child. This includes: books, pens, pencils, handwriting texts, highlighters, glue sticks, classroom consumables, resource fee ($5), Mathletics fees ($27) and STEPs Web fees ($80). Years 5 -8 : Your stationary payment is $60 per child. Due to all students having to own their device, Glenbrook School will absorb part of the stationary cost. Your stationary payments includes all books, texts, pens, pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, classroom consumables, resource fee ($5), Mathletics fees ($27), and STEPs Web ($80) fees. All students in years 5, 6 7 & 8 require a digital device. *Windows 10 or OS Mac *Has a tough outer shell and a good protective case/bag, Keyboard, Minimum 11inch screen *Has at least 6-8 hours’ battery life, 4GB of Ram minimum, Internal Hard drive greater than 120GB (SSD preferred) All students and parents will need to sign the Digital Citizenship Agreement and BYOD agreements asap. Once signed these need to be returned to school. School Donations: $100.00 per child. School donations greatly assists the BOT with providing the extras not funded by the Ministry of Education to keep our school progressing with better and accelerated results for student achievement. This includes assisting with school costs, events, teacher aides, class text books, classroom resources, reading and mathematics materials and playground equipment. The BOT are acutely aware of the added burden of the donation on families and works hard to ensure donations and MOE funding is appropriately managed. To this end, we continue to have a positive endorsement from MOE on the financial stability and sound decision making of the school. The ideal is a no donation situation however the reality is that this loss of income does affect our kids. $100 per child. $250 for families with more than 2 children. We thank you for the donation and if you have any queries about how this is used by the school please do not hesitate to contact the Principal.
