PAGE 14 WWW.CHHH.ORG REFLECTIONS - FALL 2009

Staying ahead of the curveBy 2030 the number of U.S. citizens age 70 and older will be double what it is today. This growing segment of our society will dramatically transform healthcare services through their demand for independence at home.

We use technology to enhance care to individuals and families in our four-county service area, including rural areas. For individuals recovering from surgery or suffering from debilitating illnesses, the option to receive care at home is often the key to a successful recovery.

Community Home Health & Hospice was the first home health provider in our area to offer telemonitoring services. The size of a small radio, a telemonitor is placed in a patient’s home to transmit the patient’s health statistics. Each day, the telemonitor prompts the patient (or their caregiver) to take vital health signs, oxygen saturation, blood sugars and pain levels. This information is sent via a secured telephone line and is monitored by a specially-trained registered nurse who assesses the patient’s condition and determines a course of care. This might include calling the patient’s doctor to coordinate follow-up care, telephone intervention about medication dosage, educational opportunities, an immediate visit, a scheduled visit, or emergency services. Telemonitoring keeps patients at home where they want to be—while improving their care.

Chuck, a congestive heart failure patient, has a telemonitor in his home. A reading came in through the telemonitor that Chuck’s blood pressure was dangerously low. Our nurse immediately went to see him and adjusted his medication per doctor’s orders, which began to stabilize him. Within three weeks, the nurse said he had a complete turnaround. Chuck said, “My lungs are just about clear and my strength and balance are coming back.” Many of our patients share similar stories of success with telemonitoring. The instant information allows quick responses and gives our patients and their families peace of mind.

For more information about telemonitoring contact 360.425.1868 or [email protected]. Patients do not pay for telemonitoring. Learn how telemonitoring is supported on page 12.

Who are those Tabbie Gals & Guys? For several years, the Tabbie Gals and Guys have collected aluminum can tabs for recycling. They give the money they receive to Community Home Health & Hospice to support our programs.

There are several drop-off locations, including our office at 1035 11th Avenue in Longview.

Protect patient care at home

The U.S. House of Representatives proposes cutting Medicare home health and hospice by $67 billion in order to help pay for the $1 trillion healthcare reform bill currently being considered. If approved, patients would have reduced access to these vital services.

Take action to help preserve these benefits in your community: Visit www.HelpUsChooseHome.com to learn more. Click on the “Take Action” button to send an automatic letter to our congressional representatives.

Call our representatives’ offices and tell them you want them to oppose any cuts to home health and hospice care.

o Senator Patty Murray: 1.866.481.9186

o Senator Maria Cantwell: 1.888.648.7328

o Congressman Brian Baird: 1.360.352.9241

“I felt I was taken care of personally. It eased my fears.”

- Rose, a Kelso patient who used our

telemonitoring service

Wish listOur wish list is ever-changing as the needs of our clients, patients, and families change and as wishes are fulfilled. We maintain a list of current wishes for our different programs. Examples include a storage shed for Community Day Care (cost: approximately $800), an intercom system for the Hospice Thrift Shop (cost: approximately $100) and nonperishable food to keep on hand for Hospice Care Center families. Currently, the area of greatest need is durable medical equipment for our home hospice patients and these items are listed below.

Oxygen concentrators ............ $660-$1000All of our oxygen concentrators are fully deployed which necessitates the rental of additional concentrators.

Hoyer lifts with slings ............ $1,500Required for moving paralyzed patients.

Overbed tables ....................... $50Allow patients to read, play a game, enjoy a meal and keep personal items close.

Coagucheck ........................... $2,500Eliminate the need for patients to leave home for blood draws (and the procedure is less invasive).

Semi-electric beds .................. $1,000Improve patient comfort and provide some independence.

Oxygen tanks ......................... $25-185The need for oxygen tanks among our patients has greatly increased and we are using all available equipment.

We will be happy to talk with you about specific needs for each of our programs, why the items are needed, how they would be used and the possible cost of specific items. Cash gifts designated toward the purchase of wish list items are always appreciated. Contact Julie at 360.414.5406 or [email protected].

Charitable gifts from your IRA may be tax exempt

Community Home Health & HospiceCare. Comfort. Love.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows withdrawals from an IRA directly to a charity to be tax exempt through December 31, 2009. A qualified transaction must meet three criteria: 1) you must be age 70-1/2 or older, 2) the funds must be distributed directly from your IRA to the charity, and 3) the charity must meet IRS criteria (Community Home Health & Hospice meets the criteria).

The amount is limited to a maximum of $100,000 per individual per year. IRA withdrawals for direct donation to a charity do not qualify for an IRS tax deduction.

For clarification and questions, please consult a tax professional.
