WELCOME

Thank you for being part of the Chicago Give Water Give Life benefit. If you are new to Water1st, welcome to our community. If you are already a friend, we hope you will take pride in how your support has transformed lives. Around the world, 2.5 billion people still live without a clean water supply and a simple toilet, the most basic resources for a healthy life. Each day, 200 million women and girls spend up to 5 hours collecting and carrying dirty water. Disease from dirty water is one of the world’s leading killers, and children are the most vulnerable. To address this problem, Water1st helps the world’s poorest communities implement sustainable water supply, toilet, and hygiene-education projects. Through these programs, we address the most fundamental issues of poverty, childhood death, and gender inequality. With the constant burden of water fetching and illness lifted, families can begin to move beyond the demands of daily survival. Women can earn an income. Families begin to save money. Girls can go to school, breaking the cycle of illiteracy among women. And lives are saved. The international water sector is one with a high project failure rate—up to 50% of water projects fail within the first two to five years. Water1st projects are different—they last. We know this because we routinely visit our projects to ensure that each is providing the intended benefits. Our projects are owned and operated by communities themselves. We support the organization of communities so that they are set up to build, operate, and maintain their own systems in perpetuity. You can feel confident that your donation is making a real difference in the lives of the people we serve. We believe the global water crisis can be solved when we come together and take simple and effective actions. In 10 years, the Water1st community has raised $11.8 million to fund 1,426 water projects in four countries—bringing health, dignity, and opportunity to 134,632 people. Thank you for your generosity and compassion for the poorest of the poor.

LASTING, COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTIONS

We make water supplies convenient Women and girls are traditionally responsible for water collection, walking miles to the nearest sources and carrying 40 pounds of dirty water up to 5 hours each day. The burden of hauling water leaves women with little or no time to earn money or manage their households. Girls help their mothers collect water so cannot attend school, perpetuating a cycle of illiteracy among women.

Water1st projects are designed to end the walk for water. We provide water at every home or convenient locations. Easy access to water improves health, frees up people’s time, and creates opportunity.

Every Water1st projects includes clean water, toilets, hygiene education, and community organizing.

We integrate toilets and hygiene Clean water alone is not enough. All Water1st projects integrate toilets and hygiene education, as well as piped water systems. Studies have consistently shown that together—water, toilets, and hygiene—stops the spread of disease and saves lives.

We provide stable, consistent funding to our country partners Water1st implements projects in collaboration with our local partner organizations. Each of our partners employs water, sanitation, and public health professionals who know best how to identify, design, and build appropriate technology and organize communities. Stable funding enables our partners to retain qualified and experienced staff so they can develop strong relationships with local communities and engage in long-term strategic planning.

We empower communities Communities drive every aspect of every project. Our projects serve the whole community: homes, schools, health clinics, and community centers. Community members receive extensive training to skillfully plan, build, operate, and maintain their water and sanitation projects in perpetuity. The end result is a community-managed project that lasts.

We involve women Women play a critical role in the governance and maintenance of their water and sanitation systems. Having a role as a water committee member or a hygiene promoter enhances women’s skills, making them stronger, more respected community members.

We follow up We routinely visit our projects to evaluate our work, to hold our partners accountable, and to share and exchange knowledge. We make sure each project is providing the intended benefits and generating the best possible outcomes. You can feel confident that your donation is wisely spent and is making a real difference in the lives of the people we serve.
