Give Shabbat a ChanceMore on the title of this article later.

This is the first most public opportunity of saying that I am back fromsabbatical. Rachel and I and our family returned from Boston in mid-July. I am so grateful for the time we had, the time for study and beingwith family, and for an empty email box. Because I had all my emailsautomatically deleted and I cleared my inbox, Outlook has a messageI saw over sabbatical which I will likely not see again: “We didn’t findanything to show here.”(!) I had space for breath, for reading, being

curious, taking a couple classes at Harvard Divinity School, two at Hebrew College, andan online class on organizing.

Over the summer I read about a study by Moshe Bar “Think Less, Think Better” (NYTimes, 6/19/16). He suggests: “A high mental load consistently diminished the origi-nality and creativity of the response….In general, there is a tension in our brains betweenexploration and exploitation. When we are exploratory, we attend to things with a widescope, curious and desiring to learn. Other times, we rely on, or “exploit” what we alreadyknow leaning on our expectations, trust the comfort of a predictable environment.”

I am grateful for being able to explore. And according to the mussar teacher RabbiYitzhak Hutner, the difference between being glad and grateful is that gratitude meansyou want to give back, to share with others. I look forward to doing so.

This year, we are focusing on the gift of Shabbat. How apropos! It is the fourth and lastkivvun/direction we have addressed over the past seven years. After Israel (2010), Tzedek(Justice -2012), and Torah (2014), we now reflect on the most important Jewish holiday,Shabbat.

Shabbat offers time every week for exploration and gratitude. The question is whetherwe give it enough of a chance to give us these gifts.

The funny thing in preparing for this year has been the many conversations about a tagline. So many tag lines, so many opinions! The idea was to find simple language thatcatches attention, doesn’t offend, invites engagement, and expresses a central truth aboutour goals for the year. For many years, we have used: “Make Shabbat Your Sanctuary”inviting a personal connection and the idea that Shabbat is not only at Mount Zion, itis in your home, on your walk, in nature or the soccer field, wherever you are. This year,we were going for something more colloquial to encourage all of us to stop for a momentand think about Shabbat and our own observance, whatever level it is, and considerwhat we want to do for ourselves. Other lines we considered: Take a Chance with Shab-bat, Find your Peace of Shabbat, Seek Your Shabbat.

Feel free to share your opinion, but more importantly, feel free to think about Shabbatand how this day, from Friday eve to Saturday eve, in any part, can bring you a sense ofrest (menuchah), joy (oneg), and holiness (kedushah).

L’shalom,

Adam Stock Spilker, Rabbi

Yasher Koach to the B’nei Mitzvah Class of 2015-16In honor of their B’nei Mitzvah, families contributed to a fund instead of giving individual gifts to classmates. They raised $8378; half of this will be saved for themto give as their Confirmation Class gift in 10th grade. The other half ($4189) will bedistributed to the organization the students chose in 7th grade, the National Coalitionfor the Homeless. The class requested funds be allocated to LGBTQ and Youth programs. Well done/kol hakavod!

5:45 p.m. Dedication of Lipschultz LoungeWe are grateful to Bill Lipschultz for his support to renovate ourlounge area making it more open and usable for gathering. In theprocess, the curtains were removed to let in more light and a filmcover placed directly on the glass. With Sisterhood support, we ren-ovated the Gift Store, Miriam’s Well, and placed its display beautifullyin the wall of the store. We added USB outlets for anyone who needsto work in the area. New furniture reflects a single style with multipleways to configure the room. A few other touches related to lightingand moving of displays was meant to create a space that we will usewell for many years to come. Thank you to our Mount Zion Décorchair Wendy Rubin and designer Katie Brandt for their guidance andoversight. All are welcome to a brief dedication and appreciation.

High Holy Days at Sholom HomeServices co-led by Cantor Spilker

Do you have loved ones living at Sholom Home East? Cantor Spilker willbe co-leading some of the High Holy Day services there and hopes to seeMount Zion residents, their friends and family at the following services:

Rosh Hashanah Morning Mon., October 3, 10:00 a.m.

Kol Nidre Tues., October 11, 7:00 p.m.

Yom Kippur Morning and Yizkor Weds., October 12, 10:00 a.m.

First Day of Sukkot Mon., October 17, 10:00 a.m.This service will be a combined Mount Zion/Sholom Home service

Simchat Torah Mon., October 24, 7:00 p.m.**The Orthodox and Conservative movements celebrate Simchat Torah the night after Israeli and Reform communities

On this evening of Selichot, we will sing the blessings of Havdalah, ending Shabbat. We will watch a powerful,40 minute documentary called “Inocente” which won an Academy Award for Best Short Documentary. It is intensely personal and vibrant coming of age story about a young artist’s fierce determination to never

surrender to the bleakness of her surroundings. We will discuss some Jewish texts about teshuvah and joy.We will enjoy some refreshment and then enter the brief, musical Selichot service, hear the shofar, and

witness the changing of our Torah covers to white. Our tradition places Selichot (meaning “Forgiveness”)close to midnight. We will end closer to 11:15. On this night, perhaps you will emerge more ready for these High Holy

Days. Perhaps you will be ready for changes in your own life or ways to approach what is along your path.

INOCENTE is both a timeless story about the transformative power ofart and a timely snapshot of the new face of homelessness in America, children. Neither sentimental nor sensational, INOCENTE will immerseyou in the very real, day-to-day existence of a young girl who is battling a

war that we rarely see. The challenges are staggering, but the hope in Inocente’s story proves that the hand she has been dealt does not define her,her dreams do. inocentedoc.com

As we enter the New Year, I reflect on how appreciativeI am to have been granted a leave of absence whileAdam was on sabbatical in Boston. During my leave Iwas able to stay in touch with some Mount Zion mem-bers when I came back in January to co-lead Our Bod-ies, Our Souls and again in March when I led a MountZion mission to Cuba. In Boston I was fortunate to

serve as scholar-in-residence at Mayyim Hayyim, the flagship liberalmikveh founded by author Anita Diamant. Go to mayyimhayyim.orgto learn more about this innovative and inspiring organization.

I am also grateful to continue as one of Mount Zion’s cantors in a quar-ter-time position, and I want to share some of the ways I currently serveour kehillah k’doshah, sacred community:

Continue my individual relationships with the B’nei Mitzvah stu-•dents, covering half of the tutoring for each student.Direct and maintain my connection with Shir Tzion participants.•Expand Mount Zion’s pastoral care to reach out to more people•we haven’t been able to serve as deeply on an ongoing basis.Spear-head Our Bodies, Our Souls, which will soon celebrate its•20th year.Serve as the clergy liaison to the Inclusion and Accessibility Task Force.•Support the other clergy in various areas, including officiating or•co-officiating at some life cycle events and services.Lead some of our Tot Shabbat services.•Oversee the mosaic project along with our member, Sue Koch.•Initiate and work on special projects and programs such as Yoga•and Torah sessions.Explore new missions and trips to national and international Jew-•ish communities after a successful 27-person mission to Cuba.

For the High Holy Days, I am honored to:Offer a Yizkor sermon.•Lead the Healing Service with Rabbi Adler.•Head up a chant session during the Yom Kippur Musical Meditation.•Co-lead a Rosh Hashanah-themed yoga session before Tashlich.•Help coordinate and lead the Rosh Hashanah teen service.•

In addition to my service to the synagogue, I am exploring avenues outsideof Mount Zion. Many of these roles allow me to represent Mount Zionproudly and to help to continue the sterling reputation we have in theTwin Cities community and in the Reform Movement nationally.

I lead some High Holy Day and Shabbat services at Sholom East•where I can connect with Mount Zion residents along with others.I serve on the boards of the following organizations:•

The American Conference of Cantors, the Reform movement’soprofessional organization.Rimon: Minnesota’s Jewish Arts Council.oHineni: A Center for Adult Jewish Learning and ContemplativeoPractices at the Talmud Torah of St. Paul.

I am also founding a local chapter of The Sisterhood of Salaam•Shalom to build relationships between Muslim and Jewish women.

Thank you for the many ways you support my various roles and endeav-ors. I feel honored to continue serving our very special community.

May this be a happy and healthy year for you and your loved ones.

You can’t rush a prayer to God,If it comes from the heartIt will rush out on its own

Speed through receding galaxies orSilences in the soul,And God will hear.

Don’t force the prayerOr string words together,

Pause, perhapsBetter not to pray,

Silence will be the message of awe,And God will hear.

[From “Personal Prayer: Know Before Whom You Stand” by RabbiNorman Hirsh; Mishkan Hanefesh (Rosh Hashanah), p. 41.]

With the Days of Awe almost upon us, a re-minder that we will be using the Reform Move-ment’s new Machzor, Mishkan Hanefesh, duringHigh Holy Days. If you haven’t ordered your setthere is still time! Simply go to this link on ourwebsite (mzion.org/2016/08/mishkan-hanefesh)or call the office to make sure your copy is avail-able in time.

If you have already received your Machzor then you know how delight-ful they are to hold and read. Our clergy are currently working to weavethe new prayer book into the tapestry of Mount Zion’s beloved worshipservices. Using the prayer book, I imagine that much will still be famil-iar. But we’ll also be taking part in work-in-progress that gives us per-mission, as a community, to experience the Days of Awe in new and, perhaps, richer ways.

I included the poem above as a reminder that our new Machzor encour-ages us to explore multiple pathways to inspired worship. In additionto the customary liturgy you will find prayers that have been re-imag-ined as well as commentary and meditations that may lead you to discover new insight into parts of the service that have always seemedchallenging. Whether you are comfortable right away or at first feel abit awkward with our new prayer book, be assured that “God will hear.”

And, of course, Mount Zion will hear as well. The Clergy, Board andWorship Committee are looking forward to receiving your reflectionson this year’s High Holy Day services. Your thoughts and opinionsabout what “worked” (and what didn’t) are valued and appreciated.

L’shana Tova Tikateivu! May you be written for a good year in the Book of Life!

Dan Rybeck, President

FROM THE PRESIDENT L’Chaim 5777 Annual Campaign

The launch of the Mount Zion L’Chaim 5777 Annual Campaign isjust around the corner. As the new Chair of the Annual CampaignCommittee, I would like to thank everyone who has participated in thepast and encourage everyone to consider a gift to the coming campaign.

Everyone’s sup-port will maintain who we are today and will help build an even strongertomorrow.

We understand giving is a very personal decision, and we are gratefulfor each member's consideration. I invite you to make a contributionthat is meaningful to you. You will hear more about the campaign whenit launches in October.

MAZALLIFE LONG LEARNING ONE STEP AT A TIME

Library NewsLibrary Welcome, Thank Yous, Requests, and Reminders

Welcome back to another wonderful year at Mount Zion and our Li-brary. During the summer, I evaluated the collection, and withdrew sev-eral dozen books based on age, condition, usage, and duplication. Thisallowed me to shift the entire collection, and open up sorely neededspace throughout the library. The withdrawn titles were donated to theSisterhood Garage Sale. (Thank you, Sisterhood, on your part, for do-nating a dozen titles, which filled gaps in the Library collection).

The Library is still welcoming any Jewish DVDs you may wish to do-nate from your personal collections. The librarian is also seeking anypast and present issues of Hadassah Magazine which members are will-ing to donate.

Finally, I was very pleased with the number of overdue materials whichwere returned during the summer months. I am still looking for severaltitles borrowed during the past year, and will be contacting you, if Ihaven’t already, for those materials still outstanding. Thanks, everyone!

496 bed nights were provided…nights that these families might havespent on the street if we had not opened our doors. Like last year, wehad less turnover as families are allowed to stay longer in the ProjectHome system.
