Girl Scouts 1912–2012 Girl Scouts was founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low. Daisy as she was known to her friends, dreamed of an organization that would give girls the opportunity to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness; teach citizenship and patriotism; and the value of community service. From an initial troop of 18, Girl Scouts of the USA has grown to a membership of 2.8 million girls, grades K–12; and more than 936,000 adults who fill the roles of troop leaders, board members, trainers, supporters and friends of Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts is the world’s largest organization for girls and has influenced the lives of more than 50 million women and men who have been members. We continue to keep in step with girls needs while remaining true to our core values of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, which are based on the Girl Scout Mission, Promise and Law. The Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try To serve my God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. The Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be Honest and fair, Friendly and helpful, Considerate and caring, Courageous and strong, and Responsible for what I say and do, And to Respect myself and others Respect authority, Use resources wisely, Make the world a better place, and Be a sister to every Girl Scout.
