The Five SkillsGoal Setting: Girls set cookie sales goals and with their team create a plan to reach them. Knowing how to set and reach goals are important skills needed to succeed in school, on the job and in life.

Decision Making: Girls decide where and when to sell cookies, how to market their business, and what to do with their earnings. Girls will make many decisions, big and small, throughout their lives. Practicing this in a safe environment will help girls learn how to make good ones.

Money Management: Girls develop a budget, take cookie orders and handle customers’ money. Learning to budget and how to handle money will help girls manage their money—from their lunch money to their allowance, and someday their paycheck.

People Skills: Girls learn how to talk (and listen!) to their customers, as well as how to work with other girls. This helps them do better in school (on group projects, on sports teams, and on the playground) and later, at work and other collaborative environments.

Business Ethics: Girls act honestly and responsibly during every step of the Cookie Program. This matters because employers want to hire ethical employees—and the world needs ethical leaders in every field.

2

Dear Girl Scout Families,Thank you for supporting your Girl Scout in the Cookie Program. Selling cookies is an important part of Girl Scouting, and it’s an experience that provides her with lasting skills and memories. I hope you will enjoy creating these memories together.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience gives girls a variety of experiences. Girls earn badges, go on exciting trips, explore the outdoors, work on community service projects and yes, sell cookies. Many people think of the Cookie Program as just another fundraiser, but it’s so much more. Beyond learning important life skills, the Girl Scout Cookie Program is the only income generating program where girls decide how to spend a portion of the proceeds they earned. That’s because at Girl Scouts, everything is girl-led, including the Cookie Program.

When your Girl Scout has a voice and can help to decide what to do with the money earned, she becomes courageous, confident, and empowered to make the world a better place. She’s unleashing her inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader). By participating in the Cookie Program, your Girl Scout will learn to:

• Set and reach goals • Make good decisions• Manage money • Ask for what she wants and listen to others• Become an ethical leader

But she can’t get there without you. You can support your daughter’s cookie business by becoming familiar with the program. Talk to your Troop Leader, attend the parent cookie meeting and check our website for more information. Ask your Girl Scout about her goals, and consider volunteering to booth with her.

Thank you for helping your Girl Scout develop the leadership skills she will need to become tomorrow’s trailblazer, innovator, entrepreneur, architect, creator, or pioneer. Because of you, she will have the self confidence and know-how to pursue her dreams.

Thank you for your support,

Debbie Esparza Senior Associate

Maddie DunlapTroop 1892 - 4,006 packages! I enjoy being in Girl Scouts and love when cookie time starts. My mom and Troop Leader Jamie support me in achieving my goals. The first week of cookie season I load up my cookie cart and go door-to-door with my mom. My favorite part is making colorful signs and poster boards to help describe to customers the different types of cookies we have to offer. Girl Scouts helps girls set a goal, achieve it and then make another one beyond your initial goal!! My first year I sold 3,451 boxes and this year ended with a bang of 4,006 boxes.

Maya Hernandez (also pictured on cover)

Troop 1591 - 4,016 packages!

1. Always smile, even if you are tired and grumpy from working

a long day. 2. You must get through all the no’s

to get to yes!3. Always up-sell.4. If someone can’t eat them, offer

the donation option–Cookies for the Community.

5. Have cookies with you at all times. You never

know when someone will want some!

6 When someone says, “I don’t have any cash,” say,

“That’s ok, I take cards!”

Dazzle your customer with your wit!A customer was going to buy one box, but only had a

$20 bill. Maya said, “Are you sure you want to carry all that

change in your pocket?” The customer was surprised and

bought a second box. She looked at Maya’s dad and asked,

“Do you teach her this stuff?” Her dad said, “Nope, that’s a

Maya original!”

Kaitlyn Van Der WerfTroop 2232 - 3,065 packages! I like to go out and sell cookies every day during cookie season. It’s important to go out and sell as often as you can and to ask as many people as you can. Also, be sure to tell people what your goal is, and what your troop will be doing with the cookie money. People can be very generous when they hear why you are selling cookies.

G.I.R.L. Cookie Sellers!

Girl Scouts are big thinkers, groundbreakers, and role models. Girl Scouts design robots, start garage bands, and improve their communities—and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet.

Bold, honest, and determined to succeed. In her mind failure is no reason not to get back up and try again, and again, and again. That explains why half of all U.S. businesswomen were Girl Scouts.

Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. A clear correlation: 75 percent of current female senators were Girl Scouts.

Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and embrace the unfamiliar. It’s no wonder that nearly all of the 40 women who have flown in space were Girl Scouts.

She’s confident, responsible, and committed to changing the world. Every year, Girl Scouts collectively spend more than 75 million hours improving their communities.

Know Your Customers! Nobella Devine, Troop 628My secret is that I keep my customers’ contact information each year, and when cookie season starts, I call them or go to their house to ask what they would like for the current year. I also went into several neighborhoods with my mom/family and troop to sell door-to-door. Lots of people said that no one ever comes to their home. It was hard work, and sometimes tedious, but it paid off. I achieved my goal to sell 1000 packages.

Nothing is more important than ensuring the health and safety of girls and volunteers. If you ever feel threatened or compromised, get to safety immediately, call the police and contact the Product Program Team as soon as possible. Here are a few best practices:

• Use a fanny pack instead of a cash box.• Don’t carry more than $100 with you. • When you have more than $100, remove it from the

booth area to a safe location. Ask your Troop Leader for troop deposit slips and take the money directly to the bank.

• Do not accept bills over $20. Council will not replace counterfeit bills over $20.

• Don’t tempt a potential thief! Treat cookie money the same way you treat your own money. Never leave cash unattended on the cookie table, in your car, or in an unsecured location.

Girl Safety

Behind the scenes, your Troop Leader and Cookie Manager are working incredibly hard to create the best experience for your Girl Scout. Support their efforts by following these six easy steps:

1. Attend the Cookie Parent Meeting.2. Read emails/texts and join social networking sites,

when possible. 3. Don’t be the ‘no show’ family. If you can’t make a booth,

let your Troop Leader know as soon as possible.4. Don’t take more cookies than your Girl Scout can sell.

You can always get more cookies, but you can’t bring them back.

5. Volunteer to help with booths or other tasks.6. On a weekly basis, let your Troop Leader know how many

cookies you have left to sell and turn in cookie money.

Six Easy Ways to Help Your Troop Succeed!

Setting GoalsTroop 872Our troop set a goal to go to Disneyland. We reached our goal and took the trip last summer. We spent two days at Disneyland, went to Hollywood and to the beach. We also donated over 150 boxes to the Ronald McDonald House. Next year we are considering Hawaii.

Jennifer Potter, IGM As the top seller in Indian Bend for three years, and future Girl Scout Counselor in Training (CIT), Jennifer says her secret is being committed, working hard, and pushing herself to reach her goal - summer camp! For the last three years she has achieved her goal and used her Cookie Program Credits to pay for resident Girl Scout camp.

Cookies for the CommunityHannah Mack, Troop 1000Hannah turns her cookie sale into a community service project. She picks a nonprofit each year and people donate cookies to that organization through Hannah! Originally, it started as a way for out-of-town family and friends to support her, but now her local friends and family also donate cookies. Over the last four years, Hannah has sold 1,169 packages of cookies to donate to New Life Center, Homeless Youth Connection and the Cancer Treatment Center. It’s a win-win. More cookies are sold and more importantly, it helps the community.

Support your Girl Scout by giving her the best advice! Here are some of the common questions your Girl Scout may ask you, the frequent, but wrong answers, and the right way to respond.

6

BUT THISNOT THAT,

Mom/Dad, can we post our cookies on Craigslist?

NOT THAT

Absolutely!

BUT THIS

Selling cookies on barter sites like Craigslist isn’t allowed because it lowers the value of Girl Scout cookies, may not be safe, and doesn’t teach you the skills to run a business.

Let’s set up your Digital Cookie website. You can sell to our friends and family and work through Cookie Badge requirements at the same time.

Work with your daughter to make her Digital Cookie website shine by posting a video telling friends and family why supporting the Girl Scout Cookie Program is important. Write down potential themes for your video. Don’t forget to enter her video in our Cookie Commercial contest. Contest details are included in this guide.

Mom/Dad, can we sing a loud song to bring attention to our booth?

NOT THAT

Absolutely, let’s all sing Ring Around the Rosy and form a circle around our booth. Customers won’t be able to resist our earth-shattering grand finale.

BUT THIS

Although singing might bring attention to the booth, it’s probably not the kind we want. It might annoy potential customers and it will most certainly annoy the business owner/manager. It’s important to remember that we represent Girl Scouts and should always act professionally. We want to be invited back next year.

Talk to your Girl Scout about boothing etiquette and the best ways to attract customers in a positive way. Jot down ideas to draw attention to your booth without disturbing customers or the businesses.

Page 7: G.I.R.L. · Decision Making: Girls decide where ... to handle money will help girls manage their money—from their lunch money to their allowance, ... for troop deposit slips

Mom, the Cookie Program starts in two weeks. I don’t feel like selling cookies, can you just give my Troop Leader a check so I can still go to Disneyland?

NOT THAT

Sure, how much do you need?

BUT THIS

I think you can earn your own way to Disneyland. Let’s talk about setting a cookie goal and what you can do to reach it.

Work with your Girl Scout on setting her goals. Suggest she write down her goal and then help brainstorm ways to achieve it.

I don’t want to go to the cookie booth!

NOT THAT

It’s okay, I’ll call your Troop Leader and cancel.

BUT THIS

Why? Are you nervous? Let’s work on your sales pitch together. I bet once you feel confident in what to say, you’ll feel better. I know you really want to reach your goal.

Work with your Girl Scout and talk about what makes her nervous about selling cookies. Write them down and talk about ways to help her to feel confident and remind her of the objectives and goals that led her to participate.

Mommy/Daddy, I’m tired. Can we just leave the cookies we didn’t sell in the car?

NOT THAT

Yes!

BUT THIS

We are responsible for those cookies and have to pay for them, if anything happens. They could melt in the car or get stolen. I know you’re tired, but it will just take a few minutes to unload them. Let’s do it together.

Talk to your Girl Scouts about proper ways to store cookies and secure the cookie money. Make a list of dos and don’ts when handling cookies and cookie money.

Mom/Dad, can you take cookies to work and sell them for me?

NOT THAT

Of course!

BUT THIS

I’d be happy to help you. Let’s make a poster/video that explains why Girl Scouting is important to you, your goals and how selling cookies helps your Girl Scout experience. I can share your story with my co-workers.

Work with your Girl Scout to develop new ways to reach customers. Write them down and develop a plan to incorporate them into her cookie business.

Digital Cookie is an exciting way for girls to learn 21st century entrepreneurial skills. The Digital Cookie Platform is where your Girl Scout can build her secure online business. This platform will help girls earn cookie badges, encourage the use of bar graphs and pie charts to map sales, highlight goals, aspirations, and service projects, plus have a little fun playing games and cookie trivia. Girls will design personalized online storefronts to share their cookie program goals and invite customers to support them. Customers must receive an email from the girl. Customers cannot go directly to her storefront.

What girls like best about Digital Cookie:

Easy to reach

customers!

DIGITAL COOKIE 2.0

Girls who sold online improved their year over year sales and had higher per girl averages than their peers who didn’t sell online.

There’s a Digital Cookie Mobile App! Girls can use their Digital Cookie mobile app on walkabouts and for in-person sales. It will allow them to take credit cards. Download the app from iTunes or Google Play store and use your Digital Cookie login and password. It only works if the girl’s website is set up and approved.

All digital cookies are paid for online with a credit card, but there are two ways they can be delivered:

1. Cookies are shipped directly to the customer. This is great for out of town friends and family who want to support their favorite Girl Scout! Delivery charges will apply.

2. Girls can deliver cookies to local friends and family. This saves on delivery charges, but all transactions must be approved by a parent/guardian. If the order is not approved, customers may cancel their order or donate their cookies to Cookies for the Community.

Many people have for asked for guidelines to be used throughout the Cookie Program. We believe the Girl Scout Laws are the best source of guidance.

I will do my best to be honest and fair - I don’t take cookie orders before the start date of the cookie program.

friendly and helpful - I say “please” when asking a customer to buy cookies and “thank you” after they buy them. I am helpful by describing the different types of cookies and how we plan to use the funds we raise.

considerate and caring - I only take as many cookies as I can sell and only sign up for the booths that I can attend. I don’t expect someone else to sell my leftover cookies.

courageous and strong - I smile and say “thank you,” even if a customer doesn’t purchase Girl Scout Cookies from me.

and responsible for what I say and do - every week, I turn in my cookie money and let my troop know how many cookies I have left to sell.

and to respect myself and others - I am always on my best behavior at cookie booths and on walkabouts.

respect authority - I follow the rules set by my Troop Leaders and parents. I am respectful of the businesses that allow us to booth in front of their stores and am always friendly to their customers.

use resources wisely - I set realistic individual goals and troop goals. I also help the environment by recycling empty cookie boxes.

make the world a better place - I support our community by participating in the Cookies for the Community donation program and in service projects funded by our troop proceeds.

and be a sister to every Girl Scout - I support my Girl Scout sisters in their cookie sales. And I know some of the money I help raise will benefit all my Girl Scout sisters in our Council so that we can enjoy Girl Scout programs in safe and fun environments.
