Vision and aims

At Nibras International School, we believe that we deliver an inclusive education program, which aims to recognize and provide learning experiences for all students of all abilities including the needs of our most able students.

Our Gifted and Talented policy will provide guidance as to how we will meet the needs of our most able students and be able:

o To have an agreed definition of the terms Gifted and Talented.o To identify these students using a range of criteria and assessments.o To provide for and support their potential in and out of the classroom.o To keep ongoing evaluations for the provision of Gifted and Talented students.

Definition of Gifted and Talented

Gifted and Talented students have been identified in many ways, however Nibras International School define Gifted and Talented students as per the School Inspection Framework set by KHDA 2015-2016.

o The term giftedness refers to ‘a student who is in possession of untrained and spontaneously-expressed exceptional natural ability in one or more domain of human ability.’ These domains will include intellectual, creative, social and physical abilities. In the case of a gifted student, whilst exceptional potential will be present, they may actually under achieve.

o The term talented refers to ‘a student who has been able to transform their ‘giftedness’ into exceptional performance.’ Talented students will always demonstrate exceptional levels of competence in the specific domains of human ability.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Principal will have overall responsibility that the policy at Nibras International School is implemented.

SEN team in collaboration with all the stakeholders will:

o Work together with teachers/SLT team in drawing up the Gifted and Talented whole school policy.

o Work with teachers and administration to monitor the Gifted and Talented student register as well as put this register on the Global System.

o Ensure identification processes are in place and used by all staff. o Collect examples of work that show Gifted and Talented progress within the school.

Class Teachers will:

o Identify as per our criterion (which is outlined below) and refer students in areas and monitor their progress.

o Set challenges and differentiate accordingly to enhance Gifted and Talented student’s potential.

o Establish a collaborative relationship and partnership with parents and the community about educating Gifted and Talented students along with celebrating their successes.

Parents will:

o Encourage imagination – engage in storytelling and creative expression in the arts, for example.o During parent-teacher conferences, provide anecdotes that illustrate your child’s exceptional

capabilities and interests outside of school.o Explore activities and experiences outside of the school, within your local community

and celebrate this with the school.

The School Board will:

o Ensure resources and funding is available for Gifted and Talented students and adequate staff training for Gifted and Talented workshops and events.

Identification

To ensure a consistent and accurate identification process, a variety of methods will be employed which can give reasonable information collectively. Nibras International School will take advantage of information about students from a variety of sources:

o Teacher recommendation using the referral formso Parental information on outside achievementso Peer observationo Records of achievemento Formal tests/quizzeso Extra curriculum activities

This process will result in a register being formed including a cohort of students who represent the most able and gifted in each grade. Identified students will be communicated across all teachers and parents/guardians and their progress will be monitored.
