Most significantly, the Brothers have invited lay cooperators to ac- company them during this period of discernment, as they review their mission to date and map out a plan for their mis- sion into the future. This inclusion demonstrates the commitment of the Brothers to working in close partnership with their now all lay-led Australian schools. The Australian lay representative is Mr Michael Krawec. Michael is currently a Consultant in the Southern Region Office of the Catholic Education Office and member of the Delany Foundation. He is also a former principal of two Patrician schools — Delany College Granville and Patrician Brothers Fairfield. He will take with him to In- dia our reflections on how best we might serve the young people in our care. One of the deep issues that will be considered at the General Chapter is that of the spirituality of youth. The preparatory documents for the General Chapter make the observation that: “A feature of our time is a greater quest for spirituality. Increasingly, younger generations of Catholics will say: ‘I’m spiritual but I’m not religious’. What does this mean ? Is it a ‘cop out’ or is it a symptom of a hunger for something which is deeper and more personal than a largely external adherence to Church teachings and practices?” While parish, family and the Brothers can continue to be entry points into the inner life (particularly while they are so strongly under- pinned by Holy Cross life), they compete with so many other forces in the lives of our children. We continue to strive to find new entry points for the awakening of the spiritual currents in an idealistic youth. For example, the popularity of the Duke of Edinburgh program at Holy Cross can generate a love of the God of creation. Our students just love the outdoors, its challenges, its beauty, its hardness! In entering the mystery of the Australian physical environment and our relationship to it, young people can be helped to re-sense (or sense for the very first time) the underground stream of their inner life. Meanwhile the deep story of the Catholic faith can tap that stream as it is welled. Religion builds on the wisdom of the ages, it offers the “master narrative”. These are some of my own thoughts. Should you wish to contribute to this conversation I will be most pleased to pass on your thoughts to Michael. This Friday our students will participate in masses in their local parishes to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. In preparation for this day, our Year 12 leaders have prepared a prayer to mark the day. It will be distributed to all students as a bookmark memento. Let it stand as a testimony to the reality that the values we teach at Holy Cross make a difference and that a twenty-first century spirituality that remains in touch with the “master narrative” is a rich one that will hold our young men in good stead when they leave the school on the hill. Dear Parents and Friends of Holy Cross Bearers of the Flame is the theme that the Patrician Brothers will adopt for their forthcoming General Chapter to be held in India this year from 25 August to 16 September. Most significantly, the Brothers have invited lay cooperators to ac-company them during this period of discernment, as they review their mission to date and map out a plan for their mis-sion into the future. This inclusion demonstrates the commitment of the Brothers to working in close partnership with their now all lay-led Australian schools. The Australian lay representative is Mr Michael Krawec. From the Assistant Principal Inner West Assistant Principals’ Meeting Last Tuesday all Assistant Principals met at Holy Cross College for their annual meeting. On the agenda were topics about re-search, in-servicing, technology and teaching and learning. The reason for meeting at Holy Cross was to showcase our Middle School Program and for everyone to look through our new 21st century middle school classrooms and facilities. Mr. Taylor ad-dressed the Assistant Principals and it was quite obvious that our school is leading the way in teaching and learning specific to the needs of our students in Stage Four of their education. At then end of the meeting, Mr. Taylor and I led our colleagues on a tour of our facilities. Everyone was interested and impressed with what we have done and the direction we are heading. Along the way, the Assistant Principal from Marist Eastwood was taking photos of every room he entered, envious of the outstanding facility we now operate in. Feast of the Assumption On Friday August 13th, the school will take part in the celebration of the Feast of the Assumption. The day will begin with students attending Mass in their local parish. In homeroom this week, students will nominate which Mass they will attend so that I have an accurate roll which will be taken by teachers at the Mass.

Details are as follows: 1. All students in Years 7 – 11 will be required to make their own way to their local church for 9 or 9.30am

Mass. Staff will also attend and escort students back to school either walking or on a hired bus. 2. Some students will have an opportunity to visit the local primary school following Mass for 30 minutes and

will be directed by their teachers. 3. When back at school there will be an extended recess followed by a talk by Br. Michael Callinan on the life of

Mary. 4. Lunch will follow the talk and in the afternoon we will have our Semester One Academic Awards Ceremony

in the Hall. Dismissal time will be 3.15pm and there will be no classes on this day. Students will need to bring their own recess and lunch. Full school uniform is required. For students that live a long way from school or those that are not connected to a parish, there will be Mass at school in the College Chapel beginning at 9am. Students not attending Mass in their local parish will be expected to attend Mass at school.

Thank you for your support of this important day. Peter Buxton Assistant Principal

Gifted and Talented Program Sydney Morning Herald Young Writer of the Year Competition Well done to all the Holy Cross College aspiring writers who entered this competition which was based on the theme ‘Silver’. Prior to putting forward entries, Naomi Tsvirko, one of our talented and enthusiastic English teach-ers, ran an in-house writing competition also on the theme of ‘Silver’ to encourage and draw out our best writers. The winner was Jefta Musindire in Year 11 who wrote an intriguing and very high quality piece of writing about a silver spoon working at a high end Sydney restaurant. Congratulations to Jefta who will receive a silver IPOD in acknowledgement of a superb effort. The Dorothea MacKellar Poetry Competition Matthew Munce in Year 11 is to be congratulated for his wonderful efforts in poetry composition which was en-tered in The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Award. Well done Matthew for the efforts he has given to the task in his own time. Our Year 7 classes entered the competition in an informal way at the end of Term 2 using their poetry skills. They showed great skill in incorporating the theme of “ I Hear Music” into their poems. Many thanks to Felicity Freckmann, a keen and dedicated English teacher, for organizing these entries for this pres-tigious poetry competition. Patrician Linked Schools Performing Arts Day In 2008 the Patrician Brothers celebrated 200 years since Bishop Daniel Delany founded the congrega-tion at Tullow, Ireland in 1808. Part of the Sydney celebrations were a Mass at the State Sports Centre and a Concert at the Acer Arena. These events were highly successful and brought the Patrician Linked Schools into a vibrant sense of collaboration and identity. It was agreed that the great atmosphere generated by these events should serve to develop the area of the Performing Arts in our schools. The music teachers held a series of meetings, and as a means of promot-ing excellence in music, decided to have a one day workshop to prepare Year Twelve music students for their HSC exam. And so it was that on Wednesday July 21 about 100 senior students assembled at Holy Cross to begin the workshop. The students from Delany College, Patrician Brothers Blacktown, Patrician Brothers Fair-field and Holy Cross, were welcomed by Mr Adam Taylor, Principal of Holy Cross and Brother Aengus Kavanagh, Provincial. A short DVD presentation recalling the Bicentenary events was screened along with the anthem “One in Heart and Mind”. The three presenters for the day. Trish Weekes ( aural training), Sophia Bromley (composition) and John Ockwell (performance), are all HSC music examiners. Trish Weekes conducted the aural training session. What an animated person ! Through a PowerPoint presentation and music extracts, she held the attention of the students (and their teachers) with a care-fully planned programme of activities. Her animated delivery kept everyone on their toes, literally. A very successful morning segment. A barbecue lunch and refreshments followed before returning to the Hall for the afternoon session. There were two presenters. Sophia Bromley took the Composition students to the Music Centre where she re-turned their written work with comments and the group listened to performance tapes of the students’ compositions. As with the morning session the emphasis was directed towards the music exam particu-larly towards good written responses. John Ockwell conducted the Performance session. Students presented their music pieces to the audience and John commented on their efforts. This was a very practical time. The students would have listened to singers, guitarists, percussionists and pianists, both soloists and students with backing groups. The evaluation sheets from the students rated this as a great opportunity to hear what other students were presenting and to appreciate the supportive comments that were made. A special degree of confidence is required to perform in front of a discerning audience in an unfamiliar setting before an examiner. I was very impressed by the students, who, no doubt trusted in their abilities despite their nervousness. Time brings its own constraints and though this session ran overtime it was not possible for all students to perform. The day afforded the students with a special chance to prepare for their trial exams. They obviously ap-preciated the opportunity as did their teachers. There is talk of repeating the day next year. Special thanks are due to the teachers, Nicole Konkoly, Karen Davidson, Mark Domas, Sarah Morris and Patrizia Tripodi for their planning and the preparation of their students. A very rewarding day.

Brother Mark, Convenor

Year 8 Peer Support On the last week of Term 2, Year 8 had the opportunity to participate in a peer support activity with Year 12 students. Students were divided into groups of 12, each led by a Year 12 Councillors. The councillors shared their schooling experiences, family issues and many challenges they faced along their journey. It gave year 8 students an insight into lives of other Holy Cross students, who have are soon to complete their 13 years of schooling before embarking into the real world. This was also a time where year 8 students felt comfortable to share similar stories about family, friends and school. The councillors were able to offer advice about ‘being a respectful person’; ‘staying out of trouble’ and ‘doing your best’. Here are some evaluative comments that year 8 made about the activity:

we discussed relationships with friends and family how to control our anger and temper how to be a good role model we learnt about each other and how working together is important we discussed time management the importance of listening to parents and staying out of trouble

Ms Patrizia Tripodi Yr 8 Coordinator

Year 8 House Sport

In Term 2 Year 8 participated in house sport, where the houses: Delany, Dwyer, Gallagher and Han-nigan went head to head in touch footy and/or soccer. It was great fun and was good to see that almost all the students were proudly wearing their house shirts. There was a clear rivalry between the Hannigan and Gallagher houses but in the end Gallagher almost always came out on top (but it was close). Having the students fully involved in the games was a great way of increasing team building and communication skills. Josh Skelly Yr 8 Hannigan Councillor

This is a gentle reminder that the College Walkathon is fast approaching. Students will need to begin organizing their sponsors for the day so that they can assist the College in rais-ing as much money as possible. This is the ONLY fundraiser the College has each year and we wish to make it as successful as possible. Students who raise $50 will receive a raffle ticket, and for each $5.00 over the original $50 they will receive another raffle ticket. Once all the money has been collected a raffle draw will take place at the next available College assembly to determine the winners. The first selected ticket will have a choice of one of the three prizes on offer. The next selected ticket will have a choice of the two remaining prizes. The next ticket will receive third prize. Year Coordinators will also have funds allocated to them to award prizes as they see fit. They may wish to award it to the person who raises the most money in each class or to the class that raises the most money in total. This is also a gentle reminder to parents that the College will need assistance to run the Walkathon. Infor-mation regarding the starting time and expected finishing time will be sent home in a letter later this term. Please make a note of this day in your busy schedules and see if you can assist in any way, even if for a short time. Thanking you in anticipation Mr Keith Rugg Administration Coordinator

Sports Report With the Term 3 sports beginning our teams had little preparation for their seasons. Our performances showed we needed work but also potential for improvement Our MCS Touch Football teams started off well with some mixed results. We played Blacktown and Campbelltown in our first 2 rounds and the games were always going to be tough. Our Under 13s were defeated 5-0 and 2-1. Under 15s won both of their games convincingly 6-0 and 3-1.Our Under 17s lost their first game but came back to score a good victory against Campbelltown. Our AFL teams showed some great signs for the season. The Open’s team was defeated in a close finish, with a goal being scored against them on the bell. They went down by 1 point. The Under 14s team won by 13 points and showed great potential for a quality season. Our Rugby Union team missed out on a game this week as the fields were closed. They were provided with greater preparation for next week’s game against Campbelltown. Our internal sport went ahead as the weather looked after us on Thursday. We had a new sport introduced. Circuit Training was lead by a Personal Trainer and the boys worked hard during the session. House Sport for Year 9 got under way with plenty of points on offer for the House Competition. Well done to year 9 boys. All other students should be in their chosen sport for the term. No changes can be made for the rest of the term. We look forward to our Annual Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 11th August. Good luck to all competitors. Mr Whitty PDHPE Coordinator

NSW All Schools Rugby League Carnival HOLY CROSS NSWRL State Champions On Tuesday the 3rd of August Holy Cross again tasted sporting success when the Under 13s side was crowned NSW Rugby League State Champions. Played at various locations throughout Western Sydney, the State Knockout brought together all the best teams from around New South Wales. The Under 13s, coached by Mr.Whitty, easily won their pool matches, and convincingly defeated St,Mary’s (Newcastle) in their semi final 10-0. In their Grand final, played at St.Marys League Stadium, Holy Cross was pitted against MCS Rivals Patrician Brothers Fairfield, and coached by none other than Holy Cross expatriate Phil Gibney. The match started quickly, with Holy Cross scoring off the kick off. This set a pattern for the rest of the match-all scor-ing came after Fairfield kick offs. Justin Aboumelhem topped off a good day by converting from the sideline into a swirling wind. At full time the score was Holy Cross 32 Patrician Brothers Fairfield 0, which was a high score in an 80 minute match let alone in 20 minutes. Pifeleti Pifeleti was awarded man of the match. Captain Christian Tarabey collected the State Champions plate, and for the 3rd year running Holy Cross now has another State Championship plate to mount in the Hall. Over at Kingsway reserve, the Under 15s battled a heavy wind which played havoc when kicking, and attempts at making it 3 Championships in a row were thwarted. Having lost one match under unfortunate circumstances, the boys had a chance to make the Semi Final by defeating Bass Hill High by 14 points. A match that in theory would be quite difficult to win, Holy Cross tried incredibly hard, winning 12-0, but painfully short by 2 points. Well done to the boys and to Mr.White for coaching. The Under 13s Winning team are: Christian Tarabey, Justin Aboumelhem, Cooper Henwood, Malcolm Chaney, TK Nolan, Matthew Wilson, Anthony Overton, Jon-Bernard Kairouz, Jean Loius Jones,Daniel Jones, Lachlan Bell, Sailusi Lua, Pifeleti Pifeleti, Regan Walsh, Nicholas Chesterton, Aaron Knoll. National Catholic Education Commission The Australian Greens policy on education – Catholic schools The information below is taken from a letter written to NCEC on behalf of Senator Hanson-Young on 23 June 23, and from The Greens’ website http://greens.org.au/policies/care-forpeople/education

1. The Greens believe that the government should prioritise the public education system as the cornerstone of our education system.

Outcome: proportionately more funding for government schools, less for nongovernment schools.

2. The Greens would end the present Commonwealth funding arrangement for recurrent funding to Catholic schools by the end of 2010 and return funding levels to Catholic schools to 2003/2004 levels, resulting in an immediate reduction of $427 million per year.

Outcome: significantly increased school fees, staffing cuts and increased class sizes.

3. The Greens would deny parents the right, currently protected by Commonwealth and State law, to choose a school which is conducted in accordance with explicit Catholic values and goals.

Outcome: restricted parent choice; a uniformity of schooling provision.

4. The Greens would make it impossible for Catholic schools to advertise for staff who were willing to support the Catholic ethos of the school, or to set enrolment priorities.

Outcome: Catholic schools would find it increasingly difficult to be Catholic. Bill Griffiths Chief Executive Officer [email protected] 0488 057 660 6 August 2010
