• For several days before the defense, I felt like I was sleepwalking through a nightmare. I was so afraid that I couldn’t focus on preparing. I couldn’t conceive of what the ordeal would be like, I couldn’t imagine the questions that would be asked and worst of all, I couldn’t visualize myself answering them. During the defense, I was sweating, blanked out from time to time and talked nonstop to others. I felt I wasstupid. I ended up passing with some minor revisions but it was an awful experience.

• I was on very good terms with my committee, I knew they thought my thesis was great, and I’d really prepared my presentation well. So I gave my talk, they asked interesting questions and then we all had a spirited discussion for about an hour. All in all, it was more like giving a seminar than taking an exam.
