Wil Campa y la Gran Unión (Cuba) Smoking hot Cuban son from this 13-piece ensemble featuring sizzling horn and percussion sections, and one of the finest voices in Cuban music today.

Black Umfolosi (Zimbabwe)Internationally-renowned, this dance and a cappella quintet captivate with their powerful harmonies, gospel-influenced sound and an electrifying display of southern African dance.

Yungchen Lhamo (Tibet) Possessing one of the world’s most exquisite voices, this exiled Voice of Tibet’s extraordinary singing conjures her Himalayan homeland with immense spiritual power and beauty.

Fingal (Ireland/US) Three of Irish music’s most respected musicians – James Keane (button accordion), Dáithí Sproule (guitar/vocals) and Randall Bays (fiddle) – join forces to deliver the tradition in its finest style.

Alamaailman Vasarat (Finland) Impossible to categorize, this cult avant-garde Finnish sextet, whose name means “The Hammers of the Underworld”, uses “old wood and brass” to cross musical and cultural borders – from folk to jazz, punk, kebab and beyond.

Kiran Ahluwalia (India/Canada) This Juno Award-winning artist sings stunning and original ghazals and folk songs from the Punjab, while infusing her work with other worldly musical flavours. The result is lush and captivating!

Celso Machado (Brazil/Canada) Master of irresistible Brazilian rhythms and multiple instruments, whether playing his body like a drum or performing a carefree bossa nova, there are few performers as versatile and fascinating as Machado.

Vocal Focused

Sounds from the World Wide

Rani Arbo & Daisy Mayhem (New England) A hip, young, crackerjack string band that bursts on stage with wicked grooves, sublime singing, sparkling original songs and a deep repertoire that spans 200 years of American music.

Moira Smiley & VOCO (California) Stompin’ rebel-harmonies and original songs steeped in Appalachia and Eastern Europe, accompanied by the delicious acoustic combo of cello, accordion and banjo.

Chic Gamine (Manitoba/Québec) One groovin’ powerhouse quintet from Winnipeg’s French quarter and Montréal, Chic Gamine features four female voices and covers bountiful musical ground: from 50’s doo-wop to Brazilian forro.

Remarkable Singers, Unforgettable Songs

Mary Gauthier (Louisiana) Every once in a while, a singer/songwriter comes along with a talent so deep and rich that it catapults them to the forefront of their generation. Gauthier’s songs radiate with artistry and power.

Roy Forbes (BC) Acclaimed as one of Canadian music’s finest troubadours, Roy’s soul-filled voice, his uncannily wise way with a song lyric and his accomplished performance chops are simply as good as it gets.

Nathan Rogers (Manitoba) There may be aspects of Nathan’s songs and voice that remind you of his famous father Stan, but this talented young singer is rapidly making his own name and reputation as a brilliant performer.

Cascadian Strings

John Reischman and the Jaybirds (BC)Led by one of the world’s top-ranked mandolin players, this leading bluegrass band (in BC and any other place you could mention), is legendary both for their elegant take on the bluegrass genre as well as their flawless musicianship.

Gallus Brothers (Washington) Good time, old time, wild ragtime and country blues with suitcase percussion. Have as much fun in the audience as these Bellingham-based vaudevillian minstrels have on stage!

Alys Howe (BC) The harp, one of the world’s most ancient instruments, sparkles beneath the fingers of this young, award-winning harpist whose specialty is music springing from Scottish and Irish traditions.

Redgrass (BC) Drawing on a wide range of bluegrass and old-time traditions, this trio puts the high lonesome sound through its paces, from rusty waltzes to blazing banjo and all stops in between.

The Gruff (BC) An inspired and talented young gal trio, hatched in the nest of Victoria’s busking scene, takes various folk traditions on a modern journey – ending up in the fertile terrain of Gruff Country!

Plough (BC) From the hills of East Vancouver comes this newfangled old-time and original roots music quartet, complete with banjos, fiddle, guitar, upright bass and great harmonies.

West Coast Fiddlers (BC)Youth, talent and passion combine in this showcase of young BC fiddlers, whose name will soon spread abroad, as they travel to the 2008 World Youth Symposium in Scotland.
