Gerund can be used in many ways, for example :
Gerund as subject ex: Swimming is my hobby.
Gerund as Object: ex: He hates getting up early.
Gerund as Complement ex: My hobby is reading.

When the verb is placed directly behind the verb, the form of gerund should be used to it (Verb). Eg:I am quite used to working hard.

The meaning of Gerund is similar topassive form
This bicycle needs oiling = (needs to be oiled).

INFINITIVES
To infinitive is the first form of a verb which is accompanied “to”. Some rules of use to infinitive such as :
1. Verb which followed by to infinitive
example :He agreed to go with us.She promised to come early.
