From “What’s New website” – Concurrent Migrations

Restrictions: Firmware levels 7.2 and 7.3 are restricted to eight concurrent migrations. With a 1 GB network adapter, up to four concurrent migrations are supported. From VIOS Version 2.2.2.0 or later, you must have a 10 GB network adapter to support eight concurrent migrations. From VIOS Version 2.2.2.0, or later, you must have more than one pair of VIOS partitions to support more than eight concurrent mobility operations. The Suspend/Resume feature for logical partitions is not supported on POWER8™ processor-based servers. Systems that are managed by the Integrated Virtualization Manager (IVM) support up to 8 concurrent migrations. To support the migration of up to 16 active or suspended mobile partitions from the source server to a single or multiple destination servers, the source server must have at least two VIOS partitions that are configured as mover service partitions. Each mover service partition must support up to 8 concurrent partition migration operations. If all 16 partitions are to be migrated to the same destination server, then the destination server must have at least two mover service partitions configured, and each mover service partition must support up to 8 concurrent partition migration operations.

Mover Service Partition (MSP)

Any VIOS can be a MSP….you just need to set the MSP bit

on that VIOS and it’s a dynamic change

Required for ACTIVE Partition Mobility only

Provides VIO Server functions:

– Asynchronously extracts, transports, installs partition

state during migrations

MSP must contain a single VASI virtual device

– Virtual asynchronous services interface (VASI)

– Provides communication between Hypervisors to gain

access to partition state

VIOS Tuning and General Code Level Recommendations for LPM

LPM performance tuning information in IBM Knowledge Center

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER8/p8hc3/p8hc3_viostune_lpmperf.htm?cp=POWER8%2F1-7-1-3-7-1-1-2-3

General VIOS tuning

The following recommendations assume that the VIOS has already been tuned for good virtual I/O performance by implementing changes suggested by the VIOS Advisor: https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/wikis/home?lang=en#!/wiki/Power%20Systems/page/VIOS%20Advisor

CPU

For more consistent performance, disable Power Saver mode to ensure that the processor clock frequency remains constant at the nominal value.

CPU resources recommended for optimum LPM performance are in addition to the resources already assigned to the VIOS to handle existing virtual I/O requirements

If using 1GigE, or if the bandwidth of the 10GigE link(s) to be used for LPM already reaches peaks of near 100% utilization, only 1 additional POWER7/POWER7+ /POWER8 core or vCPU is recommended, regardless of the number of concurrent migrations

If using shared processors for the VIOS and increasing the number of vCPUs is required, note that the corresponding amount of additional compute capacity must be available in the shared pool

Use Case POWER7 POWER7+ POWER8

Dedicated cores or

Shared Processor vCPUs

Dedicated cores or

Shared Processor vCPUs

Dedicated cores or

Shared Processor vCPUs

Up to max concurrent migrations on 10GigE 4 3 2

1GigE, or other applications on 10GigE link(s) for LPM already consume near 100% bandwidth

VIOS Tuning and General Code Level Recommendations for LPM (continued)

Memory

No additional memory is required for doing LPM operations beyond what is already recommended for VIOS in general

Network

Although LPM operations can run over an SEA, for best performance use a dedicated physical adapter

To avoid conflicts over network bandwidth usage between applications and LPM operations, consider using separate network links for applications and system management

Enable large send and large receive offload (LRO) at all interfaces, e.g., physical devices and SEA

NOTE: Large send and LRO should not be enabled on SEA if using Linux LPARs

Set tcp_sendspace=524288 and tcp_recvspace=524288

Use jumbo frames, if environment supports it

Miscellaneous

If at VIOS level 2.2.3.4 or above, and not using Secure LPM, set the auto_tunnel attribute as follows in order to avoid overhead in checking for IPsec tunnel setup: chdev –l vioslpm0 –a auto_tunnel =0

Set the value for max_virtual_slots for the VIOS partitions to 4000 or less, unless a higher number is required to support a large number of virtual devices

Code levels

Recommended code levels for doing LPM operations to POWER8 systems are listed here: http://www.ibm.com/support/customercare/flrt/

Refer to Fix Central for the latest firmware level recommended for your system:

LPM Considerations

Show Stoppers (configurations that do not support LPM) Different Logical Memory Block sizes on source/target systems Different Processor Compatibility Modes on source/target systems (p6, p5+, p5)

Non-virtual resources these include physical adapters logical ports from IVE non-default virtual serial adapters virtual adapters mapped to non-shared resources (CD-ROM, internal disks, etc.)

Large Factors affecting speed of migration Amount of memory in the LPAR being moved Network bandwidth and speed between source and destination Mover Service Partitions (MSP) Amount of paging space being used on LPAR being moved Amount of memory pages being changed on LPAR

What is Remote/Restart

High Availability function on POWER VM Enterprise Edition

A mechanism to relocate and restart a partition on another server when its

original host server (PHYP) fails. Live Partition Mobility (either active or inactive)

isn’t a possible solution as the VIOS and Hypervisor are no longer running.

The partition is created similar to a LPM-capable partition such that all its I/O

requirements (SAN and LAN) are done with the Virtual I/O Server (VIOS).

The partition is also marked as “remote restartable” on the HMC GUI.

Currently the only way to do R/R on the HMC is via the HMC Command Line

Interface (CLI)

Types of Remote/Restart

There are 2 types of Remote/Restart (R/R)

Partition Simplified Remote Restart- enabled in Power8 on 820

Firmware and HMC V8R8.1….WE LOVE THIS This removed the need for a Reserved Storage Device so much easier to

configure and allowed to change a partition to/from remote restartable

Partition Remote Restart – DON’T USE THIS VERSION….this is here for

hysterical purposes

This was more complicated to configure as it required a Reserved Storage Device (in

the SAN) to be configured in the VIOS so that LPAR information could be saved there.

This Reserved Device has to be accessible by the VIOS on the other servers where a

partition might be remote restarted on.

This Reserved Device also had to be the size of the partitions maximum memory

setting. So if you had a 40 Gbyte partition but its maximum memory setting in the

HMC’s profile was 80 Gbytes, the Reserved Device needed to be a LUN with 80

Gbytes.

One Reserved Device was needed for each partition that was enabled a remote

restarable

PHYP failed Operating

“FSP still running”

(Source System state is “Error” or “Error – Dump In Progress” or “Power Off”)

User initiates remote restart (rrstartlpar –o restart)

HMC performs validation on target server

Do remote restart on the target- create LPAR, do VIOS mappings, activate LPAR

Mark the LPAR on source system as remote restarted (it can no longer be activated on source)

User initiates cleanup, after source system state is back to Operating (rrstlartlpar –o cleanup)

Step 1 – HMC removes the LPAR on the source server

My suggestion for any P8 or future P8 customers!

Power8’s Simplified Remote Restart is SIGNIFICANTLY easier

to use (just set a bit on the LPAR) and you need to ADOPT this

immediately.

Constraint –

An SRR partition cannot be LPM’d to a Power7. So if you plan on running in P7

processor mode and LPMing back and forth between P7 and P8…you can’t use

this.

Otherwise, you should use this on all P8s at FW820 and above!

Here is the HMC command line to set this –

chsyscfg -r lpar -m managed-system -i "name=partition

name, simplified_remote_restart_capable=1”

IBM Power Systems LPM Automation Tool Introduction

Current use of LPM – Customers are using LPM more and more as part of their daily tasks

(workload balancing) and planned maintenance procedures

– The HMC GUI only allows a single partition to be selected at at time

– Some customers are writing scripts to move many partitions at a time

– Imagine having to move 100 partitions from a server (esp using the GUI)

Automated use of LPM – This tool was developed to allow a customer to quickly evacuate an entire

server using LPM (or a subset of partitions) to other servers

– It can also return the partitions back to the original server with the

original mappings (HBA/virtual slot id)

– You can build a plan(s) in advance and execute the plans during

maintenance windows

Tool History and Feedback

• This tool was released in 4Q2014. Over 80 WorldWide customers have

already adopted it.

• One our original customers has done more than 3000 LPMs with the tool. They

constantly balance WL and do firmware updates/VIOS updates and using GUI or

writing CLI for took hours each night….now its 20 minutes and let the tool do the

rest of the work.

• Another customer adopted the tool and commented “This tool is too easy to

use”….not sure if that was a compliment or a disappointment

• One customer has nicknamed us the “google guy”, IBM just came in and

customer downloaded it and installed it in minutes and the tool just worked! We

normally see the IBM person there for many days getting some new

technology/tool up and running

LPM Return – return partitions back to original server

This screen will show servers with partitions that haven’t

been returned to their source server. If the partitions were

moved to multiple servers, this operation will bring them back

from all the servers.

If multiple plans were used to move partitions off of this

server, you have 2 options. Let the tool bring all the

partitions back at once or you can import the plans one by

one to restore the server.

When moving the partitions back to the original managed system, the tool will restore the virtual adapter

numbers and shared proc pools and HBA mappings that were originally being used before the managed system

was evacuated

Exporting/Importing Plans

The tool is designed so that a customer can create plans, MODIFY

them outside of the tool, and import those changed plans into the tool.

The plan is an Excel spreadsheet where many of the fields can be

modified and imported back into the tool.

The plan includes both the LPM Away functionality and the LPM

Return functionality on a different worksheet.

You can import plans on either the LPM Away GUI or the LPM Return

GUI. It will read the appropriate worksheet (“LPM Away” or “LPM

Return”) and load that into the tool.

Can now specify Destination LPAR ID and Destination VFC slot

numbers and mappings on LPM Away

Much faster Export function

Advantages of LPM Plans

The customer can build stages of plans. For example, they want to do some moves on Monday (one set of application LPARs) and then Tuesday (another set of application LPARs), etc. They build a plan for each day and can import those plans the following week.

Since each plan can stand on its own, you can execute them in any order.

You can make many changes in the plan with Excel and then import those changes back into the tool.

The HMC Command Line (CL) that is executed for each LPM operation is shown in the plan.

– This can be useful if someone wants to extract the HMC CL and build their own scripts.

– It can also be used to perform the moves in the unlikely event the tool fails. The customer can save the plan. Then if there is a problem, can manually execute those commands on the HMC console.

When you import a plan, the LPM validation is done with the specific parameters/values you specified in the plan (i.e. slot numbers, msps, etc)

Support for Power Enterprise Pools

What are Power Enterprise Pools Mobile processor and memory activations may be re-allocated to any system within

a defined pool

– Systems with different clock speeds can coexist in the same pool

– Activation assignment and resource movement is controlled by the HMC

POWER8 systems may interoperate in the same pool with POWER7 systems

– High-end pool for POWER7+ 780, Power 795 & Power E880 systems

– Midrange pool for POWER7+ 770 systems & Power E870

Activations can be moved within a pool at any time, without contacting IBM

– No limit to the number of times activations can be moved

Movement of activations is instant, dynamic and non-disruptive

– Ideal for workload balancing and optimizing application availability

The tool can do placement based on Power Enterprise Pools and also

move the mobile CoD processors and memory as part of the LPM

operations.

PowerVM LPM and R/R Automation Tool

Version 3.0.1 of the LPM Automation Tool will now include Remote Restart

capabilities.

A customer can now use the GUI-based tool to do the remote restart validation

process (which you would want to do way in advance of an outage to make sure

you are properly configured) and then later do the actual Remote/Restart of the

partition from a server that has an outage.

The easy to use GUI of the tool gives the user multiple options to determine a

placement plan and to modify it easily

The tool will also give the user the ability to do the “cleanup” step after the

repaired server is back online.
