Introit Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord

Lent is a time for stepping back from the daily routine of life and thoughtfully reflectingupon our relationship with Christ. In the early church, the weeks before Easter were atime of preparation for new believers who were to be baptized on Easter morning. Overtime, others began to adopt this season of reflection and preparation and Lent (from aGerman word denoting “springtime”) grew into a significant season in the church year. Lent is a time of making personal changes, both temporary changes that cause us topause and consider, and more lasting changes that both honor tradition and take us tonew places. During Lent, we seek to open our souls to God’s work of salvation andsanctification. Yes, Lent has a somber tone for we know what lies immediately ahead. Yet, Lent is also a time of celebration. For above all, Lent reminds us that God continuesto claim and love us even in the midst of our rebellions. Lent is a season of humbly thatjoyfully affirms God’s love and grace!

OUR LENTEN CROSS: During our last homecoming celebration, we ordered dozens of

commemorative plates. When we received the plates we discovered the word “Delaware”

was misspelled. The plates were replaced but then we asked, “What can we do with the

misspelled plates?” We decided to use them in a rather ususal way. Last year many of the

plates were broken and re-figured into the Chancel Cross you see. The rest of the plates

were given to a “mosaic” ministry in Wilmington. What does this cross, constructed with

broken pieces of flawed, rejected plates symbolize to you?
