Congratulations to Lambs Removals on their
100 Years of Service
GW Lamb is a familybusiness which hasbeen in the heart of theFaithful City for 100years. It has passed
through four generations and isnow run by George William Lamband his sister Margaret, who arejoint owners.
As the family mark this specialanniversary, we look back at howthe company has changed over theyears. It all began with Mr Lamb’sgreat-grandfather. He was ablacksmith who also transportedbodies to the cemetery with a ponyand dray.
Mr Lamb’s grandfather was moreof a “wheeler dealer”, with twosecond-hand furniture shops inNew Street, Worcester.
But he went bankrupt and battledto repay his debts by starting theremovals business.
Things ran smoothly until theoutbreak of the Second World War,
when Mr Lamb’s father, who was inthe Territorial Army, was called toserve his country, rising throughthe ranks of Bombardier toSergeant Major.
The government seized thecompany’s vehicles for the wareffort allowing the opposition totake advantage of their rival’sabsence.
Mr Lamb said: “During the warWorcester was looked upon as asafe haven for storing furniture, because it was not really industrialit never got bombed.
“The opposition had a good war.”After getting his licence back, his
father started up again, but facedmore hurdles.
He had to “fight tooth and nail”to get vans on the road, becausethe rival firms objected to licenceapplications.
In 1968 new laws were introducedforcing companies to have MoTsand services for vehicles.
Mr Lamb said: “It meant that two-thirds of our vehicles didn’t comeunder the scope of the newregulations, so we had to buy threeremoval vans in the same year.”
Overnight, licences werescrapped and anyone could start aremovals business.
The company battled on and MrLamb joined his father at hisMealcheapen Street premises.
They met some unusual requestsover the years, transportingeverything from ponies, chickensand human ashes to hot schoolmeals.
The firm even delivered furnitureto Buckingham Palace.
In 1974 the family bought awarehouse in Sansome Walk,Worcester, and expanded intostorage.
Sadly Mr Lamb’s father died in1987, aged 79. This year would havemarked his 100th birthday.KATE YATES

“We are the now the largesthousehold storage company inWorcester.
“From the early days whenwe started up storing at askittle alley at The Plough inSt Martin’s Gate, where wecould perhaps only store acouple of houses worth offurniture, we now have amassive 30,000 square feet ofstorage space.”
The firm stores everythingfrom furniture to archivematerial, from one week tolong term. The premises arefully alarmed against intrudersand fire, so customers can restassured their belongings aresafe.
GW Lamb uses modernstorage methods, takingwooden containers to thecustomer, who can watchexpert staff carefully packtheir belongings away, beforemaking an inventory andreturning containers to thestores, until the customerwants them back.
