The course is an introduction to human and cultural geography. Topics include variation

of human traits, diversity of economic systems, and population changes.

degradation, and migratory movements.

3. Explain from a social, economic, and demographic point of view the differences that

exist between countries with varying degrees of economic development.

4. Evaluate the relevance, impact, and transcendence of globalization, as a

fundamental human process, beyond state boundaries, as well as their varying

outcomes, according to different scales and degrees.

D. Actividades durante el taller

1. El facilitador proveerá su información de contacto y se elegirá al representante

estudiantil.

2. El facilitador explicará detenidamente los requisitos y objetivos del curso, así

como los componentes teóricos. Además, aclarará el propósito del portafolio

digital y aprovechará la ocasión para especificar aquellas actividades (antes y

durante el taller) que se incluirán en el mismo, así como los recordatorios que

dará semanalmente.

3. El facilitador se cerciorará de que el alumno tenga acceso a los recursos de

Blackboard y el E-Lab. También se asegurará de que el estudiante entienda las

expectativas generales y las normas específicas del curso. Igualmente,

destacará la importancia de familiarizarse con todo el contenido del módulo y la

forma en que se evaluará su desempeño.

4. Reunidos en pareja, cada alumno compartirá y discutirá los organizadores

gráficos (que preparó como parte de las actividades previas al taller) que ilustra

los aspectos más importantes del objeto de estudio de la Geografía Humana.

Finalmente, cada pareja conciliará su información en un solo organizador y lo

explicará al resto de la clase. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad utilizando la

Rúbrica de participación.

5. El facilitador dividirá la clase en subgrupos y les asignará sendos (uno a cada

uno) conceptos fundamentales de la Geografía Humana (localización

geográfica, distribución o densidad). Basados en el ensayo analítico que

redactaron, como parte de las actividades previas al taller, los estudiantes

explicarán los conceptos y manifestarán sus posturas acerca de la distribución

de la población a nivel mundial y los factores que inciden en la misma. El

facilitador evaluará esta actividad utilizando la Rúbrica de comunicación oral.

6. Reunidos en forma de mesa redonda, y guiados por el facilitador, los

estudiantes discutirán:

facilitador lo autoriza, los alumnos podrían enviar su documento vía Blackboard

al facilitador, antes de que comiencen a realizar las actividades previas al

próximo taller. El facilitador evaluará esta actividad utilizando la Rúbrica de

autorreflexión.

8. Finalmente, el facilitador mencionará y aclarará las actividades que realizarán

antes del próximo taller.

a. Especialmente, asignará a cada estudiante una región del mundo para

que realicen la actividad previa al próximo taller que trata acerca del

3. Compose an informative essay (two-page minimum) explaining how

demographic processes worldwide determine the behavior of the growth of a

population.

a. Be sure to use APA style, include bibliographic citations (the maximum

percentage of quoted material allowed is 30%) and references.

b. Submit your essay to the NetTutor Paper Center and incorporate the

feedback into your written work and submit your revised essay to the

facilitator via Blackboard’s email. In addition, bring a copy of your essay

to the workshop.

c. This activity will be evaluated using the Essay Rubric. Be sure to include

a copy of your graded essay in your digital performance portfolio.

4. Prepare a T-Chart differentiating the current state of birth and death rates in the

U.S. Be prepared to participate in a cooperative learning activity in class. This

activity will be evaluated using the Paragraph Construction Rubric. Remember

to upload a graded copy of this activity to your Digital Performance Portfolio.

5. Go to the written discussion forum created by the facilitator within the

Discussion area of the course in Blackboard and answer the following

questions:

a. What are the leading causes of human migration?

b. What type of factors are linked to birth and mortality rates?

React to the comments of at least two colleagues with specific and meaningful

feedback. This activity will be evaluated using the Written Discussion Forum

Rubric.

6. Create a list detailing at least three factors that influence the behavior of human

migration between regions and countries. Bring your list to the workshop and be

prepared to discuss this topic with peers.

7. Design a tree diagram to explain the purpose and overall factors of behavior of

the demographic processes worldwide. Upload your diagram to the assignment

area in Blackboard. Bring a copy of your diagram to class.

8. Using the Virtual Library or other reliable sources, find information about the

behavior of birth and mortality rates of the region of the world assigned to you

by the facilitator during the previous workshop.

email, prior to Workshop Two, to receive specific feedback related to its

content and linguistic aspects (grammar, punctuation, and mechanics).

d. Incorporate the feedback provided by the facilitator into your presentation

and come prepared to deliver your presentation during the workshop.

e. This activity will be evaluated using the Paragraph Construction Rubric.

Be sure to upload this activity with its corresponding rubric to your Digital

9. Continue working on your Digital Portfolio following the instructions established

in the Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook found in

Blackboard.

10. Go to Rosetta Stone Advantage and continue working on the interactive

exercises designed to develop/improve your linguistic skills in English.

D. Application Activities during the Workshop

1. The facilitator will lead the class in a review of the topics discussed in the previous

workshop to ensure students’ comprehension. Every student will share one

concept learned so far that was challenging to understand and explain what helped

them learn the concept.

2. The facilitator will prepare a constructivist activity to review the assignments

completed by the students prior to the workshop and to ensure every student’s

comprehension.

3. In random order, the student will orally present his/her audiovisual presentations

explaining the behavior of birth and mortality rates of their assigned region of the

world. This activity will be evaluated using the Group Oral and Audiovisual

Presentation Rubric. The facilitator will remind students to upload a copy of their

graded presentation and corresponding rubric to their Digital Performance Portfolio.

a. After all the presentations have been delivered and concluded, the facilitator

will divide the class in subgroups.

b. Each subgroup will be assigned two of the regions presented to create a

Venn diagram, in which they will differentiate the behavior of birth and

mortality rates between each of the assigned regions of the world.

c. If time permits, each group will briefly explain the key differences and

similarities of the behavior of birth and mortality rates between each of the

assigned regions of the world, using their Venn diagram.

4. Within the same subgroups as the previous activity, students will discuss the

movement of the population from a geographical point of view. Afterward, students

will illustrate the most essential ideas exchanged using chart paper and will present

their illustration(s) to the rest of the class. The facilitator will provide specific

feedback and will clarify doubts as needed. This activity will be evaluated using the

Participation Rubric.

5. Guided by the facilitator, students will revisit the essay and tree diagram topic to

engage students in a round table format discussion on how demographic

processes determine the behavior of the growth of the population. The facilitator

will promote active participation during the discussion and will clarify doubts, as

needed.

6. Working with a peer, students will engage in a pair-and-compare activity regarding

WORKSHOP FIVE

Part II of II

This is the second part of the workshop, which also contains activities that must be

completed before the workshop, along with the ones in the Spanish section. It is

recommended that the first two hours of this workshop be offered in Spanish, while the

last two hours be spoken in English. Both the facilitator and the students must use the

language assigned for the activities before and during the workshop. As a flexible

measure, which does not affect the teaching model, the facilitator could alter the order of

the languages without combining them.

C. Activities to be completed before the Workshop

1. Design a chart in which you distinguish the impact of the following two contemporary

phenomena related to the population and the economy: overpopulation and

unemployment.

a. Upload your completed chart to the assignment area, located within the Course

Menu section in Blackboard and bring a copy to the workshop, as well.

2. Go to the written discussion forum created by the facilitator within the Discussion area

of the course in Blackboard and answer the following question:

a. In your opinion, in what ways could family planning service programs contribute

to economic and social development?

b. Examine the opinion posted by at least three of your colleagues. Choose one of

your colleague’s postings and comment on any new idea(s) you learned from

him or her.

c. This activity will be evaluated using the Written Discussion Forum Rubric.

3. Prepare for the second partial exam, which the facilitator will administer during the last

two hours of the workshop, in English. The specific concepts included in the second

partial exam are the following:

a. The importance of the spatial analysis of the different contemporary phenomena,

related to the population and the economy

b. The relation that exists between the population distribution, its growth and

decrease, the migratory movements, and the environmental degradation

c. How government policies directly affect the demographic processes of some

countries

This activity will form part of your evaluation. Remember to include a graded copy of

the second partial exam in your digital portfolio within the corresponding week.

4. Create a list of at least five review questions and two doubts related to the content of

the upcoming second partial exam. Bring your list of questions and doubts to the

workshop.

5. Continue working on your Digital Portfolio following the instructions established in the

Digital Performance Portfolio Assessment Handbook found in Blackboard.

D. Application Activities during the Workshop

1. The facilitator will divide the class into subgroups. Students will use their charts

prepared before the workshop to discuss within their groups, the contemporary

phenomena of overpopulation and unemployment and its impact upon the population

and the economy.

a. During the discussion, the facilitator will encourage students to share their

perspectives on these phenomena and exchange relevant information.

b. In addition, students will answer the following question:

i. What are the main peculiarities of spatial data at the time of analysis when

comparing overpopulation and unemployment?

c. Each group will summarize their answer and orally share it with the rest of the

class.

d. Guided by the facilitator, students will compare and contrast their answers. The

facilitator will provide feedback and clarify doubts, as needed.

2. In small groups, students will share and discuss their review questions, prepared

before the workshop, related to the second partial exam. Students will have the

opportunity to clarify their doubts with peers. The facilitator will address any unclear

information or concepts, as needed.

3. The facilitator will administer the second partial exam during the last two hours of the

workshop.

4. Students will complete the final course evaluation, following the instructions

determined by the facilitator.
