Protection and ControlThe G30 Generator protection systemprovides comprehensive protection forsmall to medium sized steam, hydraulicand combustion-turbine generatorsas well as applications that have boththe generator and transformer inthe same zone of protection. The G30is ideal for protecting single and multi-polegeneratorswith singleor split phasewindingsconfigurationofgenerators.TheG30 includes advanced automation andcommunication capabilities, extensiveI/O options, and powerful fault recordingfeatures that can simplify fault anddisturbancetroubleshootingandminimizegenerator downtime. As part of the URfamily,theG30providessuperiorprotectionandcontrolthatincludes:

Generator/Transformer Differential

High-speedpercentdifferentialprotectionis provided for detecting and clearingboth generator stator and transformerwinding faults that occur in the zone ofprotection of a single generator. Thedifferential protection element has built-in phase compensation and magnitudecompensationcharacteristicsthatallowfordealingwiththeinherentoffsetthatoccurswith CTs located on different windingsof the transformer. These compensationcharacteristics eliminate the need forinstalling additional interposing CTs to

account for the difference in parametersmeasuredbytherelay.

2nd Harmonic inrush inhibit

The G30 utilizes a 2nd Harmonic InrushInhibit function to block the G30 fromtripping under transformer inrushconditions that can otherwise causethe differential element to maloperate. This element can be configured toinclude energization of different types oftransformersbyusingeitheratraditionaloradaptivemodeof2ndHarmonicrestraint.

The adaptive 2nd harmonic restraintmaintains protection dependability andspeed on internal faults while ensuringsecurityduringinrushconditionsevenwithweaksecondharmonics.

overexcitation inhibit

An increase in transformer voltage ordecrease in system frequencymay resultin overexcitation of the transformer. It isoften desirable to prevent operation ofthe percent differential element in thesecasesthereforeafirthharmonicinhibitis

integratedintopercentdifferentialfunctionto protect for overexcitation conditionsresulting from an increased V/Hz ratio.Theoverexcitation inhibitworksonaper-phasebasisandisuserdefinable.

Split Phase Protection

Split phase protection is provided forsensitivedetectionforinter-turnfaultsandcanberuninconjunctionwiththeprimarystatordifferentialprotection. Independentsettingsareprovidedonaper-phasebasisand a single-slope bias characteristic isusedtoallowoperationonmachineswithasectionofwindingbypassed.

restricted Ground Fault (rGF)

Restricted Ground Fault protection (alsoknown as zero sequence differential)extendsprotectioncoveragetotheneutralpoint of the stator winding, where faultcurrentsmay be below the pickup of themain stator differential element. The low-impedanceRGFprotectionprovidedbytheG30 uses an optimized adaptive restraintsignal that provides security for externalfault conditions that may cause CTsaturationwhilestillmaintainingsensitivityforinternalfaults.

Sensitive Directional Power

Two separate directional power elementsare provided to detect reverse and lowforward power conditions that is oftenneeded for ensuring power only flows inone direction through the breaker. Eachelement responds to either reverse orlow forwardpower flowandcanbeusedto provide independent alarm and tripsettings.

loss of Excitation

Generator loss of excitation protectionis provided via two negative offset mhocharacteristics as per IEEE C37.102.Independentpickuptimedelaysettingsandblocking input provide security for blownVTfusesandpowerswingconditions.

Frequency rate of Change

Thefouravailablefrequencyrateofchange(df/dt) elements can be used to provideprotection against system disturbancesthrough load shedding and to provideanti-islandingprotection. Theseelementsmonitorthespeedbywhichthefrequencychangesinanydirection, throughvoltage, current, andfrequencysupervision.

Pump Storage Generator

The G30 can be used for protectinggenerators that are also run as pumpstorage motors without the need forswitchingtheCTsecondarycircuitry. TheG30 is able to automatically compensatefor the phase reversal that occurs whenthegeneratorisbeingrunasamotor.

Synchronism Check

The G30 provides elements to monitordifferences in voltage magnitudes, phase angles, and frequencies toperform synchronism check across up totwo breakers. The G30 can be used inconjunctionwithanexternalsynchronizeras an independent check of thesynchronizerpriortoclosingthegeneratorbreaker.

iEC 61850 Process BusThe IEC 61850 Process Bus module isdesigned to interfacewith theGEMultilinHardFiber System, allowing bi-directionalIEC61850fiberopticcommunications.TheHardFiberSystemisdesignedtointegrateseamlesslywiththeexistingUniversalRelay

The Adaptive 2nd Harmonic Inhibit function will stop blocking the differential element as soon as the 2nd harmonic level drops below the pickup level if the angle of the 2nd Harmonic to Fundamental ratio is close to 0° or 180° (Point A). If the angle of the 2nd Harmonic to Fundamental ratio is close to 90°or 270°, this is a indication that the transformer is an inrush condition even if the magnitude drops below the pickup level, the Adaptive 2nd Harmonic Inhibit function will continue to block the differential element for an extended period of time (Point B).
