Genealogy of the Evans' family, the "Virginia Biddles" and

other related families

Comp, by Esther M. LeitholdWoodland, California, 1944

My maternal grandmother's maiden name waa Maria Evans, and I became inter -

ested in her family history soon after the death of my mother in 19 18.

A fev years later I found a Genealogical Chart of her family that had

been prepared by Ellis Evans and presented to his sister, Lizzie Evans Stern,

before 1880 while she was living with her daughter, Mrs. C. H. Woodworth, at

Berkeley, California. The letters and papers that Ellis Evans accumulated

while working on this chart have been preserved by his granddaughter Miss Claire

Evans who, until recently, lived at Farmington, Missouri.

With this Chart as a guide, I have examined County Records in Maryland,

Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Oregon and

California - beside State records, newspaper files and other documents in the

various states and at Washington, D. C. I have also contacted numerous persons

who had family Bibles or other genealogical data relating to this family.

According to tradition, several Evans' brothers (some say three) came to

America in Colonial times; and the Chart names Walter Evans as the emigrant

ancestor of our branch of the family.

Only one Walter Evans bought State Land in Virginia during this period;

and he secured (for 45 shillings) 420 acres of new land in King William's

County on January 22, 1718. Later, when King William's County was divided, that

land was in Caroline County. Most of the records of King William's and

Caroline Counties have been destroyed; but the few remaining Court Records show

that many Evanses (having our family names) lived in those counties.

A William Evans and a George Evans loft Caroline County for Amelia County

in 1736. They may have been brothers of Walter Evans. In 1756 and 1757 William

and George Evans left Amelia County and bought land in Halifax County - where

they lived near John and Nathaniel Evans. George Evans' land was on Miry Creek.I

The Chart shows that Walter Evans, our first American ancestor, had a son,

George Evans. It is a matter of record that this George Evans was living in

Halifax County, Virginia, in 1767, when he bought land on Great Straitatone

Creek in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He lived there until 1777 when he and

his wife Mary sold their 4-00 acres of land on Great Straitatone Creek. In July,

1777, he and his sons Edward and George Jr. signed the Oath of Allegiance in

Pittsylvania County. In 1779 George Evans bought land on Banister River and

Mill Creek in the adjoining county of Halifax. The deed to this land was witnessed

by George Evans Jr. George Evans Sr. lived on this place until his death in 1788.

For convenience I am numbering each name to show which generation it belongs

to, and lettering it to designate its place in the family.

1,

WALTER EVANS came to America from Wales

.

2,

GEORGE EVANS, who died in Halifax Co., Va. in 1788, married Mary - and had

the following children to reach manhood and womanhood:

3a, WILLIAM EVANS3b, EDWARD EVANS3c, GEORGE EVANS3d, JOHN EVANS3e, WALTER EVANS3f, JAMES EVANS

3g, ELIZABETH EVANS3h, SARAH EVANS3i, MARY EVANS (usually called Polly.)

After the death of (2) George Evans Sr. in 1788, (3c) George Evans Jr. was

appointed executor of the estate; but the heirs evidently divided the personal

property and, abandoning their old home, bought tracts of land in the territory

that is now known as Tennessee and Kentucky. What was left of the home property

in Virginia was sold by commissioners in 1798 to settle the estate.

According to old land records William, Edward, George, John, Walter and

James Evans had bought land in north-eastern Tennessee by 1790 , and had paid for

most of it with Virginia currency.

As Edward and George Evans were at home with their father when they signed

the Oath of Allegiance in 1777, we may assume that William was older and was

already in the Revolutionary Army. As the other boys did not sign, they were

probably too young - or not yet sixteen. (3c) George Evans was past sixteen and

his brother Edward eighteen, or older, in 1777.

(3a) WILLIAM EVANS

According to the Chart, "William Evans died in Georgia. One son went to

Alabama and the others remained in Georgia. His children were:

(La) WILLIAM EVANS who died young;(Lb) JOHN EVANS, who moved to Alabama;(Lc) ANSLEM (May have been Austin) who remained in Georgia;(Ld) ELIZA EVANS, who married William Glover and lived near her sister Eoda;(Le) RODA EVANS, who married William Pettis. Lived in Crawford Co.

(Lf) Daughter who married McNeil and lived in Butte Co., Ga.(Lg) Daughter who married Burr and lived in Butte Co., Ga.

I have been unable to verify the above. Three Revolutionary soldiers from

Virginia, by the name of William Evans, settled in Georgia. They were undoubtedly

related. Two of them, who were near the same age, might either of them have been

our (3a) William Evans . Traditions in the Evans' family names Agusta Evans

Wilson (a popular writer of the Civil War period) as a descendent of this William

Evans, I have tried to locate the William Evans who was her ancestor.

By combining D.A.R. records and other information from the Department of

Archives and History of the State of Alabama, I have found the following:

WILLIAM EVANS (1751-1827) served as a Lieutenant in the Continental Army under

Col. John Green's Infantry of the 6th Virginia Regiment. He was born in Richmond,

Va. and died at Columbus, Ga. He married Ellie Graves Cooper in 1776. His .son

(5) Thomas Evans, married Martha Crenshaw, daughter of John H. and Jane Vivion

(Howard) Crenshaw. They had sons:

(6a) Thomas Crenshaw Evans (I8OL-I858 ) and(6b) Matt Ryon Evans (1809-1868)

(6a) THOMAS CRENSHAW EVANS had a son

(7a) WILLIAM SWANSON EVANS (I838 -I91L) who married Margaret Elizabeth Dunson(I8L3 -I89 I). They had daughters:

(8a) RUTH EVANS, who married T Ais, and

(8b) Jennie Evans, who married Bradfield.

(6b) MATT RYAN EVANS, married Sarah Skrine, daughter of John and Jane

-3-

i.

( Crenshaw) Howard, on July 15, 1834. Their children were:

(7a) AGUSTA JANE EVANS, who married L M. Wilson of Mobile, Ala.

(Tb) JOHN HOWARD EVANS, who nover married. Lived in Mobile, Ala.

(7c) VIVION RUTHERFORD EVANS, parried Fannie White,(7d) CAROLINE COOPER EVANS, married Col. Bush Jones,(7e) SARAH HOWARD EVANS, married'John W. Bush of Birmingham,(7f) MARY ELIZA EVANS, married Leo Tarleton of New York.

(7g) RANDOLPH CRANSHAW EVANS, married Claire Hamlin of Mobile, Ala.(7h) ANN VIRGINIA EVANS, married Baxton Bragg, son of Judge John Bragg,

and once lived in Mobile.

The other William Evans, who was either our (3a) WILLIAM EVANS or his cousin,

was born in Caroline County, Va. in 1752 and married in 1776, the same year' he

enlisted in Capt. Salter's Co. in North Carolina, where he 'served -one year, and

six months. He died in Taliaferro Co., Ga in 1841. His children, and other

heirs, mentioned in his will were:

ABSALOM EVANS,WILLIAM EVANS JR.

,

JESSE EVANS,DAVID EVANS

,

ELIJAH EVANS,JOHN EVANS,TIBATHA (EVANS) IRBYELIZABETH (EVANS) IRBY,NANCY (EVANS) BICKERS,EMALINA ( EVANS ) RHODES,the heirs of MARTHA (EVANS) LEVERETT,the heirs of RACHAEL (EVANS) RAY.

His son John Evans and his son-in-law William Rhodes were appointed Executors.

The will was witnessed by Ashbury Ogletree, Richard Ogaltree and William Hampton.

(3b) EDWARD EVANS

According to the Chart Edward Evans was married twice and the names of his

children were given by his first wife; so they are incomplete. The names given

are:

"(4a) JOHN G. EVANS, who married and had children, William, Polly and

Clarinza.

(4c) CLARINZA EVANS, married Mr. Potent and lived in London, Ky.

(4d) NANCY EVANS had daughters, Desdemona and Louisa.

(4e) SARAH EVANS, married B. Graves (or Groves) and lived at London,

Ky. Had children, William, Evalina and others, in Laurel Co., Ky.

The name is sometimes spelled Gross.

(3b) EDWARD EVANS died in Indiana where he had long lived.”

I have not Been able to verify any of the above data.

(3c) GEORGE EVANS

According to the 1785 census of Halifax Co., Va , (3c) George Evans Jr.

had a family of four white persons and one slave. As his father was listed as

being the head of another family, we assume that George Evans Jr. was married

and had two children at that time. In September, 1788, he was named Executor

of his Father's estate. On May 20, 1789, George Evans, of Hawkins Co., bought

800 acres of land in Hawkins County "south of the Ohio River in North Carolina,

for which he paid 230 pounds of Virginia Currency". This land was at the head

waters of Cedar Creek and was later in Jefferson County, Tennessee.

When Tennessee was made a state in 1796, George Evans was appointed the

first magistrate of Jefferson Co. by Gov. Sevier. He prospered and continued

to buy land in eastern Tennessee. He was mentioned, in documents of the time,

as "Squire Evans" and "George Evans, Gentleman". He lived at times on his

property at Tazewell, Claibourne Co., and at his inn at Clinch River in Granger

Co.; but he always retained his farm in Jefferson Co., which he considered his

home.

His wife is mentioned as Sarah, in the family Bible; and according to family

traditions she was Sarah Hampton, a sister of Gen. Wade Hampton. I have found

no documentary proof of this; but as the tradition comes through the descendents

of three of her children, who had no contact with each other for two generations,

I believe that Sarah Evans was the youngest sister of Gen. Wade Hampton and

daughter of Anthony Hampton* who had "been a neighbor of George Evans Sr. in

Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. (3c) GEORGE EVANS died in January, 1828, and left

the following family:

(4a) JESSE EVANS

(4b) NATHAN EVANS

(4c) ELIJAH EVANS

(4d) GEORGE H. EVANS

(4e) WALTER EVANS

(4f) WILLIAM B. EVANS

(4g) MARY EVANS

(4h) RODA EVANS

(4i) LOUISA EVANS

(4j) ELIZABETH EVANS (ELIZA)

(4a) JESSE EVANS

(4a) JESSE EVANS was probably the oldest child of (3c) George Evans as he

is mentioned first in all documents relating to the family. The information

about him, from the Genoalogical Chart, is that he wont to West Tennessee or

Arkansas. He witnessed a deed in Jefferson Co. for his father in 1801. He was

also mentioned when the last of his father's estate was sold in December, 1836 ,

in Jefferson County. There was another Jesse Evans mentioned in the records of

Jefferson Co. who may have been his son or nephew, as the census of 1830 showed

him to be a younger man.

(4b) NATHAN EVANS

(4b) NATHAN EVANS, according to the Chart, went to Central Tennessee.

However N. A. (Nathan) Evans was County Clerk of Claiborne Co. in 1840. He was

also the Clerk of the Circuit Court of that County from 1844 to 1852; and in

1848 he "was permitted to place a horse -rack on the public squair, in front of

his store, for the use of the County"; so ho must have been in business in

Tazewell at that time.

(4 c) ELIJAH EVANS

(4c) ELIJAH EVANS waa born on Fobruary 11, 1786, in Halifax Co., Va. ; and

moved with his family to Hawkins Co., North Carolina, before 1790. After Tennessee

was made a state and Hawkins County was divided, the Evans' home was in Jefferson

Co., Tennessee. In 1804 he married Ruth Holt and moved to Granger Co., where his

father had "bought a ferry to cross the Clinch River > an Inn, and other property.

Ruth Holt was the daughter of David and Ruth Holt and was born January 1, 1791 >

and died January 26, 1867. All materials gathered from the descendents of Elijah

Evans indicate that he and his Wife were married in 1804; but data from Granger

Co. Records, kept in the State Library at Nashville say: "Elijah Evans married

Ruthey Holt February 28, 1807. John Bunch Jr. Bondsman." The date of their

marriage is not given in the Family Bible.

On the death of his father Elijah Evans inherited a large amount of property,

and was considered a man of importance in tho community in which he lived. He

died on March 15, 1842, at the age of 56 years. Elijah and Ruth Evans had

twelve children, ten of whom lived to reach maturity. They were:

(3f) JAMES EVANS was the youngest child in the (2) George Evans Family.

He was horn in Halifax Co., Va. ahd wont to Tennessee with his brothers and

sisters after the death of his father in 1788. He wont to Illinois whore he

lived until 1840 when he moved to Texas. Ho had several children among whom

were:

(4a) JAMES M. EVANS

(4b) NANCY EVANS, married Jacob Dennis and moved to Salt River, Mo., in

1816.

(3g) ELIZABETH EVANS was born in Virginia and married Thomas Carlin. There

are several contradictory accounts of tho Carlin family: but from the library at

Springfield, 111., I found the following: "The traditional history of the Carlin

family covers a period of nearly 2000 years . The Carlins went to Ireland from

Rome in the year 54 B.C. under tho command of Julius Caesar. They settled in

the northern part of Hibernia, now called Ireland. Their Roman name was Carlinius .

In 1774 five of tho seven sons of John Carlin, from near Carrickfergus, County

Antrim, left Ireland. Thomas and Daniel came to America and landed at Norfolk,

Virginia." It was said that Thomas located in Halifax Co. Va., whore ho met

Elizabeth Evans and married her in 1775. They spent most of their married life

near Sholbyville, Ky.j but in 1803 the family moved to St. Francisco Co., Mo.,

and Thomas Carlin died near Frcdorickson, Mo. in 1804. Elizabeth Carlin, with

seven children, ono an infant, returned to hor family in Tennossoo, where she

later married William Savage. Hor children woro:

(4a) JOHN EVANS CARLIN. I have been unable to find any data about (4a)

John Evans Carlin, except the traditional report that he had been killed by

Indians; but he must have lived long enough to have married and had at least one

child; for Miss Ella Lee Perry of Exeter, 111., contributed tho following

information: "John Evans Carlin married Elizabeth and had a daughter:

(5a) MARTHA CARLIN, born 1795. Died 1838 at Carlinville, 111.

Married Jehu Hill (born in the Pcndelton District, Anderson Co., S. C. on

March 20, 1789. Their first two children were born in Anderson Co,, S. C. Jehu

Hill bought land near Carlinville in 1835; "but after the death of his wife in

1838 ho remarried and moved to Iowa. They had one daughter:

(6) JANE HILL, born 1818 and married 1st Richard McCormick, and

had several children, and 2nd Caleb Perry. They had one daughter:

(7) ELLA LEE PERRY, born 1862

(4b) THOMAS CARLIN was born July 18, 1786, or 1789, and is frequently

spoken of as the oldest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Carlin; so John E. Carlin

must have been killed when Thomas was quite young. After tho death of his

father he spent some time with his mother in Tennessee. In 1812, he enlisted in

the U. S. Army, where he served for several years. He married Rebocca Huitt,

at Edwardsville Junction, 111. in 1814, and was one of the first porsons to

settle in Green Co. 111., where ho built his home south of the present site of

Carrolton, which town was built on his land and was named for his friend, Charles

BIDDLE

In searching early Colonial records we have to remember that few of ourColonial ancestors could read and write with any degree of accuracy. Theindividual immigrants

, from different parts of the British Isles, had their ownpeculiar way of pronouncing their names; and many of the County Clerks had diffi-culty with spelling; so it is not surprising that the same name was sometimesspelled several different ways in the same document.

The name Biddle is found in these early documents spelled: Biddle, Bittle,Brittle, Beedle, Buddie, Breddle, etc.

In 1617, Francis Beedle and Rupart (or Robert) Beedle came to York Co., Va.,from the Virgin Islands.

In 1689, Francis Briddle gave property, in Isle of Wight Co,, to his granddaughterMary Hampton.

In 1669 , Francis Bredle bought land on the south side of the James River in Isleof Wight County. Most of the records of that County have been destroyed;but Francis Bredal was a Quaker; and from their church records we findthat he had a wife, Mary Briddle and a daughter Mary who married JohnDenson on September 12, 1692 . They also had a daughter Elizabeth whomarried Thomas Hampton. They also had two sons, Francis B. Briddle, who made a disorderly marriage (according to the Quaker records) andBartholum Brittle who bought land in Surry Co., Va. The Surry Countybranch of the family became prominent and married into the Washington, and other important Colonial families . They continued to spell theirname Brittle

.

In 1712, Francis Breddle died and left property to his daughter Mary Denson, thewife of John Denson: to his grandson Francis Hampton; to his daughter -

in -law Elizabeth Sikes: to his grandson Francis Denson: to his grand-daughter -in-law Elizabeth Hampton: and to his wife Mary Briddle.

1st generation: In l68l the will of ROBERT BITTLE of Isle of Wight Co., Va.was proved. He left his property to his "wife and children". On May 6 ,

1682,an inventory of the estate was signed by his former wife Sissely

Towle. The only one of his children mentioned was John Betle, whoreceived some of the property.

2nd generation: JOHN BETLE (BITTLE) undoubtedly had two sons, for the recordsshow that William Bittle and his wife Elizabeth bought land in Isle ofWight Co . in 1737 and 1749 . In 1749 part of the County of Isle cfWight was included in the new County of Southampton; and after thattime the Bittle property was usually located in Southampton County.

3rd generation: On June 26, 1760 , John Bittle died and left property to hiswife Sarah and his daughters Lucy Bittle and Mary Saul. His brotherWilliam Bittle was named executor; and William Kirby was one of thejury to assess the property.

On August 12, 1764, the will of WILLIAM BITTLE wa3 probated. Hisheirs were: his wife Elizabeth Bittle;

Son William Bittle, who probably went to Northampton Co., N. C. andmarried Mary Bass, and had children, John James, William and Nancy.

CAPELL

The tradition, which I have never tried to prove, is that the AmericanCapells are the descendents of a distinguished English family who traced theirdescent from Edward I (1239-1307), and also from Edward III through his sonThomas of Woodstock. From this family came the Earls of Essex, who sufferedpoverty and death for their loyalty to the ruling Royal Family.

The name, in oarly times, was spoiled in various ways; and, in ourColonial documents the name is often spelled several different ways in the samedo cument

.

The first Capell we find on the main land of south-eastern Virginia PeterCapel who, on April 27, 1686, was granted 200 acres of land in Lower NorfolkCo. for transporting 4 persons to the Colony. No doubt he was the Peter Capelwho came to America from London on Capt. John Body's ship "Colilins" on July 3,1677.

As the records of Lower Norfolk Co . have been destroyed there are n»tany documents that might name his descendents; but in 1725, Thomas Capell wasgranted 345 acres of land in Surry Co., Va. This Thomas Capell may havo beenthe son or grandson of Peter Capel; or he may have been the son of Thomas Capellof the "Eastern Shore" , in Northampton Co

. , Va. ,

who died in 1719 and left awill in which he mentioned his sons John, William and Edward. Nathaniel Capell,of Northampton Co. died in 1713, and left a will in which he mentioned his 3onThomas. Jennings C. Wise in his book "Early History of the Eastern Shore ofVirginia" says that the Scarborghs, Littletons, Kendalls, Capells and Custisfamilies were among the most prominent of the settlers in that part of Virginia, both socially and financially.

The Thomas Capell, who was granted land in Surry Co., Va. in 1725, died andleft a will which was probated in August, 1769 . In this will ho left propertyto hi3 wife Ann and to the following sons and daughters:

1, Son EDWARD CAPELL, whose will was probated in Northampton Co., N. C. inOctober, 1795, mentioning the following heirs:

Thomas Capell Charles CapellJohn Capell Robinson CapellSterling Capell Polly HixRansom Capoll Judy Capell

2, Son JOHN CAPELL, who married Joyce , and had a daughter Nancy Capell,

born November 19, 1763.

3 , Daughter MARY BATTLE

.

4, Daughter Sarah Battle, wife of John Battle, had daughter Angelica, bornFobruary 15, 1758.

5, Son CHARLES CAPELL, born January 31 , 1741 -2 . Married Eliza. Had son EldridgeCapell, born November 2

, 1774 .

6, Son THOMAS CAPELL.

7, Son RANSOM CAPELL, born October 7, 1747.

HAMPTON

From "Genealogy of America" at the Sacramento State Library, I copied thefollowing:

"William Hampton (1586-1652)' came to Virginia from London, England, on the"Bona Nova" in 1621. His wife Joan came to Virginia on the "Abigail" in 1621,They settled in Glouchester Co., Va.

Rev. Thomas Hampton (1623-1690), of James City Co. married Elizabeth Bridell.

Capt. John Hampton (1650-1718), of King William's Co., Va. married Mary Mann in1677.

John Hampton Jr. (1683-1748), of Fairfax Co., Va. married Margaret Wade in 1712.

Anthony Hampton (1715 “1776) married Elizabeth Preston in 1775- He was a memberof the N. C. Provincial Congress."

Dr. Miller of Thomas, West Virginia, has many old books containing records ofthe Hampton Family. From them I found that:

"John Hampton died January 18, 1748, aged 64 years, 6 months and 15 days." andthat "John Hampton Jr. wa3 born in Glouchester Co. on June 3* 1683."

Also that "Margaret Hampton, relic of John Hampton, died May 17, 1773*

She was the daughter of James Wade and was born in New Kent Co., Va. on May 1,

1694."

From an old Prayer Book, which had belonged to John Hampton Jr., I copied the

following:

"John Wade Hampton was born May 27, 1713. Died young.Anthony Hampton was born February 2, 1715,Mary Hampton was born June 10, 1717.Twins who died youngElizabeth Hampton was born May 1720.Henry Hampton wa3 born October 1721.James Hampton was born September 1723.Margaret Hampton was born December 16, 1725.John Hampton was born May 28, 1727.Thomas Hampton was born October 11, 1728.

Rosamond Hampton was born September 1735."

Children of Anthony Hampton mentioned in Prayer Book:

Margaret Hampton was born April 15* 1742.

John Hampton was born August 4, 1743.Anthony Hampton was born December 16, 1744, and died young.

Edward Hampton was born April 9 , 1746."

This was the last entry John Hampton made in his Prayer Book; but Anthony had

other children. There were: Preston, Henry, Richard, Wade (1754-1835) and

Elizabeth (born 1758) who married James Harrison. Some authorities say he had

other daughters, hut I have found no documentary evidence of other daughters;however, the records of Surry Co., N. C., show that Anthony Hampton and his wifeANN HAMPTON, sold property to their son-in-law Gray Bynum (husband of MargaretHampton) on December 22, 1772. Ann Hampton must have been his first wife* andmother of his children. Their daughtor Elizabeth was born in 1758, so it is quitepossible that they had another daughter born about 1760, and named Sarah.

Anthony Hampton had lived, for some time, near his brother Thomas Hampton,in Pittsylvania Co., Va. When Thomas Hampton died in 1797., he left his propertyto his wife Sarah, and his children Henry, James, John, Preston, Thomas, Margaretand Nancy.

The Evans' family also lived in Pittsylvania Co., Va. In fact the Hampton andEvans families both lived in King William's Co. at the 3ame time; so they hadprobably known each other for three generations evt the time of the Revolution. It seems probable that the tradition, in the Evans family is true, that Sarah, the wife of George Evans, was Sarah Hampton, the daughter of Anthony Hampton and3 ister of Gen. Wade Hampton.

WESTBROOK

The earliest record of the Westbrook family in south-eastern Virginia, thatI have been able to find, i3 a reference to Hellcn Westbrook and her children,Henry Westbrook and Martha Juhkins, in 1706.

Henry 'Westbrook did not leave a will but, in the next generation, Samuel,Thomas, Hannah, John and Henry Westbrook paid taxes in that part of Virginia.

During the next fifty years there were so many Westbrooks named Samuel,Thomas and Henry it is almost impossible to separate them into their properfamilies; but a THOMAS WESTBROOK had a wife named Pracilla, sons named HENRY,Persons, William Preston, and Thomas Westbrook, and daughters named RebeccaTillman and Sallie Andrews.

In 1759 , THOMAS WESTBROOK gave his son HENRY WESTBROOK 170 acres of landwhore he (Henry) then lived. (This land was patented in Williamsburg in 1757.)He also gave Henry the negros he then had, named Daniel, Will, Chloe and Buk.

HENRY WESTBROOK, of this family, had a daughter, LUCY WESTBROOK, who marriedKIRBY BITTLE on November 6, 1775. (Soo Biddle Genealogy.)

HENRY WESTBROOK died on October 3, 1793; and although ho had a wife anddaughter, LUCY BITTIE. he left hi3 large estate to his mother Pracilla Westbrook, and named his brother WILLIAM PRESTON WESTBROOK executor.

From the minutes of the Committee of Safety and the Public Claims, duringthe Revolutionary War, are found the following items:

October 8, 1778, HENRY WESTBROOK was appointed, by the Court, Ensign forthe Company commanded by Capt. John T. Blow.

May 19, 1780, HENRY WESTBROOK was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and SamuelWestbrook was made Ensign,

September 9 , 1780, Received from HENRY WESTBROOK, 1 barrel (33 gal.) ofbrandy for the uso of the Army.

KIRBY

The first KIRBY mentioned in southeastern Virginia was Andrew Kirby, whocamo from the "Virginia Islands" to York County, where he bought land onFebruary 18, 1633.

In the next generation we find Michaell Kerby, who bought land in Isle ofWight Co. in 1705. Ho died before 1728, and it was stipulated in his will thathis son RICHARD KIRBY should be paid his share of the estate by hi3 brothersJohn, Michael, William, and David Kieby, all sons of Michael KIRBY.

On January 8, 1744, Richard Kirby Jr. sold 100 acres of land, on the southside of the Notteway River, to ROBERT BITTLE. The deed was signed by RichardKirby Jr. and his wife Maccy Mary Kirby and was witnessed by William Bittlo.(This was about the time Robert Bittle married Judith Kirby, the 3ister ofRichard Kirby Jr*)

In 1761, RICHARD KIRBY died and left property to his wife Judith Kirby, his son3 William, John, Richard and Moody Kirby, and his daughters Mercy West,JUDITH BITTLE and ELIZABETH INGRAM.

RICHARD KIRBY of Sandwich, who settled in southeastern Virginia, was oneof the first Kirbys to settle in America. Most of the family were Quakers, andthey seem to have been related to the Kirby '

3

of Maryland, a3 they havo manyof the same family names.
