10/11Annual Report
The vision for a cultural arts center in Germantown was conceived in the 90’s by enlightened local activists who understood the power of the arts to build community. BlackRock opened its doors in 2002 and is today a thriving organization serving thousands of arts patrons each year. A cultural corner-stone of Germantown, BlackRock is known as a place where all members of our community can gather to experience high quality performances, art exhibits and education opportuni-ties in a beautiful, intimate facility housing two theaters, an outdoor stage, two art galleries, dance studios and classrooms.

From the Executive Director
Dear Friends –
All in all, 2010-11 was a very good year for BlackRock. After a stretch of conservative programming in response to the rocky economy, we began to breathe a bit easier and think a bit bigger, which led to several successful new partnerships and projects. It was gratifying that our efforts were rewarded with a budget surplus at the end of the year.
Our partnership with Upcounty Theatre, an emerging nonprofit community theatre group, took root in Fall 2010 and blossomed throughout the season. In exchange for donated performance space, Upcounty Theatre members volun-teered at BlackRock as house managers, ushers, and even portrait models for our Open Arts Studio. Their debut production of The Dinner Party at BlackRock in January 2011 was a hit!
A highlight of the year was the opening of the Terrace Gallery in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. The purpose of the partnership is to jointly seek Montgomery County visual artists for exhibits in both the Terrace Gallery at BlackRock and the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery in the Silver Spring Civic Center. The inaugural exhibit in April 2011 featured the celebrated watercolorist David R. Daniels, who also conducted a popular workshop.
Nearly 2,400 adults and children strummed, pirouetted, harmonized, painted, and learned all manner of arts skills in 301 dance, drama, music, and visual arts classes throughout the year. We’re proud of our ongoing outreach educa-tion initiatives at five area schools and of our scholarship program, which enabled 166 children of low-income families to participate in arts classes and camps.
Did you know that BlackRock is not only the cultural cornerstone of Germantown, but is also an important community resource? Meals on Wheels uses our kitchen as their daily distribution center, and we host scores of events for Rotary Clubs, County agencies, Leadership Montgomery, and other nonprofit colleagues. We’re also a source of jobs. In 2010-11, BlackRock employed 13 full- and part-time administrative staff, 20 stage technicians and box office staff, 28 contracted arts educators, and nearly 350 contracted musicians, dancers, actors and visual artists. We’re grateful to our dedicated corps of volunteers who donated more than 2,200 hours of service.
On behalf of the BlackRock board and staff, heartfelt thanks to all our patrons, donors, and sponsors for making 2010/11 a successful year.
Onward! Charlotte Sommers
