LIBRARIES HAVE TRADITIONALLY SERVED as the very hearth of intellectual pursuit. For many centuries, cities, universities, and indeed private estates were assessed, in part, by the degree to which their resources were devoted to knowledge, most tangibly evidenced by books, and the libraries that held them.
THE VATICAN LIBRARY contains 80,000 manuscripts; 100,000 units of archival material; 1,600,000 printed books (both ancient and modern, including 8,400 incunabula and tens of thousands of 16th and 17th century books); 150,000 works of graphic art (prints, drawings and engravings); 150,000 photographs (primarily 19th century); and 300,000 coins and medals.
AFTER CENTURIES upon centuries of safeguarding these treasures the time has come to update, restore and even repair ancient manuscripts. The ultimate goal is to allow for these items to be shared online; but before that can happen they must be protected through detailed restoration. This includes not just the written collections but also the artwork that is contained within the Library, in particular the Sistine Hall (Salone Sistino). ONCE RESTORED the collections will be placed in a climate control setting to ensure their safety in perpetuity. And once preserved they can be scanned, digitized and shared with the world.
