20 Questions With…

Nanci Nicholas 22

Inside this issue

Hello and welcome to another exciting edition of our chapter newsletter, For The Record. We are excited to have you back with us. We have only a few months left, but there is so many exciting opportunities, we know you will be there to benefit from them.

First up, I hope you were able to attend the joint seminar with San Antonio. I have it on great authority that Steven Williams, IGP and Chris Barden, CRM along with their partners in the San Antonio chapter put on another amazing full day educational opportunity with lots of content and networking opportunities. Kudos to them for their hard work.

As for upcoming opportunities, in March, Vickie Stephens, CRM has another exciting and interactive education workshop where Kevin Waldrup, CRM; Kim DeCola, CRM, and myself will lead a panel discussion around applying The Principles (the Generally Accepted Record Keeping Principles) to a RIM Scenario where we will consider The Principles as they apply to scenarios around an Information Management department and apply them towards ARMA’s Maturity Model. We did a similar workshop last year, and it was a great lively discussion and interactive learning experience. This is taking place on March 29th at the Hall of Honor at Camp Mabry. You can click HERE for driving directions. Registration opens at 8:30am and the workshop will begin at 9:00am. There will be snacks and beverages on hand to help keep your concentration and energy up. We hope you will join us. You can RSVP by clicking HERE.

We also have our annual Chapter Sponsorship Expo. This event allows us to highlight our sponsors and the plethora of solutions they provide Information Management professionals. Please join us on March 30th at the Wyndham Garden Hotel at 3401 South IH 35 (at Woodward), Austin TX 78741. The event will be from 11:30am – 1pm and will include a plated lunch which is free for chapter members and available to Friends of Austin ARMA for a nominal fee of $10. We hope you come out and join us for a great opportunity to network with our chapter sponsors. If you require solutions for the management of your organization’s information, we ask you turn to our chapter sponsors first. Their support of this chapter is a great benefit that helps keep our costs lower than the majority of chapters of our size. You can RSVP by clicking HERE.

April is no time to slow down. We will have the return of our Chapter lunch education meetings. This will be on April 20th at our regular BBVA Compass location with Steven Williams, IGP speaking about electronic records and preparing for their disposition.

April will also see our chapter’s 14th Annual Free Community Spring Shred Day.

So… how was your spring break? It

was crazy busy in my neck of the

woods with SXSW. Can you believe

March is almost over? Where is the

time going…

Let’s talk about things that worry you

at work. Do you stress over whether or

not your folks are keeping too many

copies? What about whether or not

your company is in compliance? Do you

have a good disaster plan in place? Do

you know what and where your vital or

essential records are?

For me it’s all about compliance. In this

digital age where our technology is

growing at hyper speed I often feel like

a hamster on a wheel trying to keep

up. Fortunately, I’m blessed with a

great group of IT folks to work with

who see the value in Information

Governance. Our real challenge is

getting the employees onboard. How

do you face those challenges in your

business? Have you had a successful

implementation of change

management? If anyone would like to

share helpful hints or tidbits, please

feel free to email me and I’ll include

them in a future issue. It is always

good to compare notes and help each

other out.

Remember that shred day is in April so

I’m sure I’ll see many of you there. Our

survey for this month is the annual

Chapter of the Year information so

please take a minute to respond.

Take a minute to enjoy spring, too.

Smell the flowers, listen to the wind in

the trees, drop your stress at the door.

Struck by a wild idea? Share

it with me for the newsletter!

...Continued from page 2

We are so proud of this event and its continued success. It will be held again at the ACC Highland campus near where the House of Torment attraction used to be (GPS address is 523 E Highland Mall Blvd). Ways you can help are to promote the event (by sharing the chapter website link www.austinarma.com/shred-day on your social media and with your contacts) and, of course, we need volunteers... This is a large event, and we need people to happily interact and direct the community to ensure everything moves smoothly. We have our regular shifts of 7:30am – 11am/ 10:30am – 2:30pm or full day 7:30am – 2:30pm. The chapter provides breakfast tacos, lunch with snacks and refreshments throughout the day. There is also access to indoor plumbing for bathroom breaks. And if you have heard me say it once, you have heard me say it many times, if you need a pick me up or even positive affirmation that people are awesome, come to a Shred Day, because the attendees will thank you all day long. As a bonus, it also gives you extra raffle tickets to the end of year June Appreciation meeting door prizes, membership dues prize and International Conference prize (which is being held in Orlando, Florida this year). It’s kind of a win-win-win-win-win-win scenario. Please contact me at [email protected] to sign up to volunteer. It’s a great way to solidify your “Awesome” status in the chapter.

May will have another Education workshop tentatively on Change Management and our last Chapter educational luncheon for the year, the latter which will take place again at BBVA Compass on May 23rd. Keep an eye out for more information on that as it is available.

There will of course be our June Appreciation meeting you won’t want to miss. Don’t forget that we are raffling off our original chapter pins for $1 per ticket to

be drawn at the June Appreciation meeting and you don’t have to be present to win this prize. But you do need to be present to win the other door prizes and the coveted Membership dues prize that will pay your chapter dues in the International and local chapter organizations for a year and the highly coveted International Conference prize that will pay you the budgeted amount (between $800 - $1,200; depending on what is budgeted in August) toward your registration, lodging and travel expenses to attend the international conference. It is a great event where you can relax and network with your fellow members and industry professionals while enjoying great food, laughs and prizes. Be there or be square.

We also have raffle tickets from the ARMA International Education Foundation ($5 a piece or 5 for $20), that will have a prize drawn or an iPad at the Region Leadership Conferences and the International Conference. If your name isn’t drawn at the Region Leadership Conference, it is placed back in the drawing for the International Conference. So you have more than one change to win for every ticket you buy. And it helps support the furthering of education for fellow Information Management professionals and those who would like to one day be an Information Management professional. Please see me if you would like a ticket.

As always, we have a great selection of items in our chapter store to help you show off your chapter pride. Based on the survey responses from last issue, there are quite a few items people seem to want, so I am excited to see sales increase once we add those additional items to our store.

I hope your start to Spring has been a great one. We are excited to keep “springing forward” and advancing our great chapter and the profession it represents. I hope you want to hop along with us.

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--GE Aviation announced today that it has acquired Critical Technologies, Inc., branded as AirVault®, a privately-owned supplier of cloud-based digital records management. As Education Chair for the chapter, I am pleased to announce the upcoming education events for the upcoming Austin ARMA year 2016-2017: Vital Records and Disaster Planning Wednesday, January 25, 2017 Protection of information assets from loss and destruction can make or break an organization. Learn how to identify and protect vital records, how to perform a risk assessment and how to develop a disaster recovery plan for your organization. Information Governance/Records and Information Scenario Wednesday, March 29, 2017 Gartner defines information governance as the specification of decision rights and an accountability framework to ensure appropriate behavior in the valuation, creation, storage, use, archiving and deletion of information. In this session a panel of information professionals will explore a real life records and information scenario applying the Generally Accepted Recordkeeping Principles and Information Governance. 1. Do you like sports? I enjoy swimming, walking and bike riding but not competi-tive sports. I was the kid last to be picked on the softball team and sent far out field which was fine by me. 2. Cooking or baking? My adult children would laugh. Let’s just say I kept them alive. Lucky for them their father liked to cook. Now that I am single, I keep it simple. 3. Do you collect anything? Interesting picture frames found at local thrift stores or gar-age sales.

4. Did you go to college and what was your major?

Yes, my major was Studio Art with an emphasis on painting and design.

5. Do you have brothers and sisters? I am the youngest of 4 with 2 older brothers and 1 older sis-ter. 6. How did you get started in Records Management? I served Executives most of my tenure. Was given high level records management responsibilities and grew to love it so I sought out a role in our department. It’s in my blood now. 7. What type of music do you like? Anything but rap. Seriously I will leave the room, it sends me over the edge. I prefer jazz, acoustic guitar with singing, Christian music and Classical. 8. What is your favorite state to visit? My home state of Massachusetts. The beautiful hills of Berk-shire County. 9. Have you ever been to another country? I have been to Mexico several times on vacation. Colors are wonderful! 10. How long have you been a member of ARMA? About a month 11. Are you an adventurer? Life is an adventure every day. Visual adventures where I can see and experience beauty and meet new people appeal. I

won’t be jumping out of a plane any time soon.

12. Are you a movie fan? Only if the cover is in sepia tones. Back when we could walk in a store and pick one out my daughter teased they were the only ones I rented. I like chick flicks and love crime mys-teries and espionage. 13. Have you ever done anything that terrified you? Starting over with 3 kids, one in college, taught me I can overcome fear but it was closest to being terrified. 14. Are you afraid of anything? I get test anxiety but am overcoming that though the CRM process. 15. Do you have a dream car? One that will fly. 16. Where were you born? Massachusetts 17. Do you like to read? Most definitely, I bounce between spiritual growth, art and world affair topics. 18. What do you do for fun when you aren’t working? Family time, painting, swimming, fishing and always up for outdoor activity. 19. Do you have any pets? Does a goldfish count? They don’t shed. 20. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I am legally deaf. I have been my whole life. I read lips and minds (kidding ...well maybe faces). It is more evident in group settings but often people are surprised when I tell them.
