As part of its commitment to continue providing high-quality care to Treasure Coast residents, Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital opened the first phase of its renovated emergency department in January 2020. The renovated ED will accommodate the growing community and provide an enhanced patient experience. Phase I of the ED renovation offers a bright new space featuring larger, all-private exam rooms devel- oped with patient comfort and safety in mind. It also was designed to create an efficient working area for caregivers. Donald Wood, DO, is Chief of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director at Martin North Hospital. “This is a big step forward,” he said, “the exam rooms are large and there is more privacy for patients. Caregivers will have access to more computers and technology to deliver their healthcare.” The emergency department was relocated in January from its former location to the newly constructed area next door. The former emergency department location is now being renovated, with the second phase of the expansion expected to be complete by fall 2020. When the expansion is finished, the transformed ED will be doubled in size. The $20 million project was funded entirely by donations through the Cleveland Clinic Martin Health Foundation. The facility will be named the Gwen and Jules Knapp Emergency Center to honor the Knapps for their $3 million contribution toward the new emer- gency department. The emergency department is one of many options Cleveland Clinic Martin Health offers Treasure Coast residents in need of emergent care. That includes urgent care, expedited appointments to primary care providers, and access to Cleveland Clinic Express Care Online. On Saturday, December 7, 2019 a sheriff ’s depart-ment helicopter flyover marked the beginning of the 34th Annual Hobe Sound Christmas Parade. The streets were lined with red and green along with patri-otic colors showing great American pride with this year’s theme dedicated to Pearl Harbor Day. Proudly presented by O’Donnell Impact Windows and Doors, the parade’s 70 entries did not disappoint the nearly 6,000 spectators who came out to watch the parade and welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus to Hobe Sound.

I have the pleasure of spearheading a dynamic and enthusiastic Board of Directors for 2020. The new Board was installed at a very well attended luncheon held at the prestigious Mariner Sands Country Club and sponsored by TCIROOD. Chef John Saundry served up a delicious lunch and our District 3 Commissioner, Harold Jenkins, did the honor of installing our new Board.

And the air was electric with the anticipation of the awards presented to deserving business members spon-sored by Bridge Boat & RV Storage and Hobe Sound Heroes sponsored by Recovery Insurance Adjusters and Loving Chiropractic of Stuart. The Pelican Award was sponsored by Source One Solutions. I had the pleasure of presenting the Pelican trophy to Bob Thornton of O’Donnell Impact Windows and Storm Protection. This award is presented each year to a business leader who puts aside their own personal gain for service to the community.

Ambassador of the Year was given to Linda Wolf, ActiveCanvas; Volunteer of the Year went to Amy Snow, Red Hawk Fire and Security; Dr. Lenore Maio of Zen Bodyworks received a trophy for New Member of the Year; Non-profit Organization Award went to Madison’s Miracles; and the Community Enhancement trophy was given to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Martin County.

The Hobe Sound Heroes awards included Teacher of the Year, Wendy Schepman of South Fork High School; Fire Rescue Department Professional, Luke Latham; and Law Enforcement Professional was Deputy Sheriff Frank Baldwin who is assigned to Hobe Sound Elementary School.

On the first weekend in February, The Festival of the Arts presented by Cleveland Clinic Martin Health, was a huge success. Yes, Saturday’s rainy weather did dampen our spirits a bit, but through it all, visitors came, gener-ously donating to our scholarship fund and going home with art treasures. Sunday, however, was a bright sun-shiny, day with perfect temperatures and the event was so crowded, that at times people could hardly walk down the road that was lined with tents showing off amazing art, great food, as well as beautiful crafts and a green market. Both days saw a full contingent of dedicated and faithful volunteers. The Children’s Services Council provided lunch on both days for the volunteers with the Young Professionals of Martin County serving up the tasty offerings.

I’m happy to report that the Chow Down Hobe Sound Food Truck event, presented by Strategic Realty, has been very popular in its new location and a ton of fun. The January event was held on a beautiful Friday evening, and was attended by a record- breaking crowd. There was a wide variety of food to choose from, as well as music and dancing in the street. The kids who came along with their parents had a blast playing and running on the grassy field, while the parents enjoyed conversa-tion and libations offered by Bonner Mobile Bar, with their neighbors and friends. The Chamber’s Ambassador committee took the opportunity to present to the Chamber staff a custom-made 10 x 10 tent printed with Chamber name and logo. This tent will certainly be an asset at community events.

In January we resumed the Inside Hobe Sound Tour under the guiding hand of long-time Hobe Sound resi-dent and Chamber member, Blake Capps of Capps Roofing. With a new itinerary and new stops along the tour, this event was a major success. New dates are being decided for future tours.

The ongoing Bridge Road project has been a challenge for all of us who come to the Chamber office on a regular basis, however, we see the vision for a beau-tiful, welcoming, user-friendly entrance to our Hobe Sound downtown and so we endure while watching the progress. If you want to learn more about the project you are welcome to attend update-meetings scheduled to be held in the Chamber office on Feb. 6, Mar. 5, Apr. 2, May 7, June 4, and July 2, from 5:30 to 6:00pm.

As I look forward in 2020, I’m excited about the direction our Chamber is going. Our Monthly Breakfasts and Business After Hours are well attended. Our New Member Orientation, Nibbles & Networking Luncheons and Coffee Talks are special opportunities for our members to be presenters and/or sponsors putting their name in front of very receptive audiences. Plans are already underway for the 37th Annual Hobe Sound Golf Tournament. Our new member count is already up for the new year, our retention rate is extraordinary, and sponsors are coming forward to reserve dates for upcom-ing events. Looking ahead, it’s all GOOD!

Treasure Coast Food Bank Receives $50,000 Grant from the Walmart Foundation

Treasure Coast Food Bank has launched a new pro-gram supported by a $50,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to develop solutions to efficiently transport unused food from local food donors to partner agencies, such as food pantries and soup kitchens.

“Each year, 72 billion pounds of perfectly good food goes to waste, yet 40 million Americans face hunger,” said Judith Cruz, President and CEO of Treasure Coast Food Bank. “Walmart Foundation’s generous support will help us leverage technology and volunteers to engage local businesses in the fight to end hunger.”

The new program, known as Meals 4 Miles Meal Connect, not only rescues food that otherwise might be thrown out. It enlists volunteers living close to the retail outlets to pick up and deliver the food to nearby pantries. It keeps the delivery trips short and gets the food to people in need as quickly as possible.

Treasure Coast Food Bank will leverage MealConnect, Feeding America’s food donation app, to automate the rescue and distribution of unused perishable food items in a sustainable, cost-effective way. Feeding America developed MealConnect to provide donors a convenient, free and safe way to reduce waste and connect surplus food with people who face hunger.

In the first few months, more than 7,500 pounds of food has been collected from convenience stores, includ-ing bakery items, frozen foods, perishable food, including fruit, fruit cups and yogurts, and nonperishable items.

About three times a week, the stores alert Treasure Coast Food Bank that food is available for donation. Treasure Coast Food Bank then alerts volunteers who already have signed up to collect it. The volunteers take

it directly to a nearby partner agency for distribution. Volunteers are given a tool kit – a scale to weigh dona-

tions, thermometer and thermal blankets to ensure foods are transported at food-safe temperatures. Listen to a deeper discussion about the program on Treasure Coast Food Bank’s monthly podcast at https://sto-phunger.org/podcasts/#d5acfe88b8438ae6c.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide dona-tions of both food and funds to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks. Treasure Coast Food Bank has been supported by Walmart and the Walmart Foundation as well as local Walmart associates through numerous programs, including the annual Fight Hunger. Spark Change campaign and as support-ers of Treasure Coast Food Bank’s Pack The House event. Treasure Coast Food Bank also was a recipient of 15,000 pounds of food through a partnership with Walmart in 2018.

For more information about Meals 4 Miles Meal Connect or to get involved, contact Gary Porter at [email protected].

Treasure Coast Food Bank is the only food bank and largest hunger relief organization on Florida’s Treasure Coast, providing the community each year with millions of meals valued at more than $50 million through robust programs and in partnership with 400 charitable organizations in Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Okeechobee counties. In addition to emergency food distribution, Treasure Coast Food Bank operates a full roster of direct service programs that not only solve the immediate problem of hunger, but help individuals and families gain long-term food security, better health out-comes, and self-sufficiency. Treasure Coast Food Bank is a member of Feeding America, the nationwide network of 200 food banks that leads the fight against hunger in the United States. Loggerhead Marinelife Center has a Banner Year!

According to Jack E. Lighton, the CEO of the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, “2019 was the most successful year in our Center’s history and together we were able to make Waves of Progress for sea turtle and ocean conservation.”

In the January 2020 Newsletter from the Marinelife Center, Lighton presented statistics on what made 2019 notable.

350,00+ Guests were welcomed with free admission 74,752 Guests were educated through the STEM

education programs 20,998 Sea turtle nests marked and monitored on

their 9.5 mile beach 112 Sea turtle patients were released 180 Sea turtle patients were in their care during

2019 4,578.92+ Pounds of trash was removed from their

local beaches through their clean up efforts 200+ Mangroves were grown by students in Palm

Beach County Schools in partnership with the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

In addition, they enjoyed an amazing opportunity with NBC’s Today Show which showcased the Center and the story of, “Today” a beautiful green sea turtle who was released back into the ocean on live TV.

And lastly, their exciting Waves of Progress expan-sion construction commenced in 2019. Fellow Chamber Members & Hobe Sound residents: The members of the Ambassador Committee wish

you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2020!!! The committee welcomed a new ambassador in the

last quarter of 2019. Ryan Knowlton (Morgan Stanley) is volunteering his time to serve on our committee.

On February 8th, the ambassadors had a retreat sponsored by Linda and Eric Wolf, ActiveCanvas Digital Marketing. This workshop gave our ambassa-dors the opportunity to learn how to better serve the chamber’s membership. Our goal was to discover how we can better ‘act with intention’ to see that our group is serving its purpose and achieving our mission.

Our offer to help with marketing your business is still open through our Welcome Bag Program. For ten dollars, member businesses can put an item in the Welcome Bags, sponsored by Dr. Leon & Shelly Gonyo, Stuart Family Chiropractic & Acupuncture Center. These bags are hand delivered to new business-es by our ambassadors or picked up by new residents at the chamber office. If you are interested, please contact me or Jan Otten at the Chamber office to learn more.

On November 30th, ambassadors worked the cham-ber booth at Tequesta Fest at Paradise Park. We had a great time sharing information about your chamber with the residents of Tequesta. Unfortunately, our tent had too much fun and was destroyed. At a recent meet-ing, Dr. Lenore Maio (Zen Bodyworks) suggested that our committee “pass the hat” and purchase a new tent for the chamber, as it is not part of the chamber’s 2020 budget. Dr. Maio and Lucie McGuire (Arrow Title Services) collected funds and worked with George Kleine and Barbara McLaughlin (The Hobe Sound Beach Shop, A Tees Please Company) to complete this project. Please thank these individuals for going above and beyond for this community.

Our ambassadors made quite the showing this year at the Installation Luncheon. Ambassador of the Year was awarded to Linda Wolf. New Member of the Year was awarded to Dr. Lenore Maio. Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Amy Snow (Redhawk Fire & Security.) The new Non-Profit of the Year award was given to Christina Stamper (Madison’s Miracles.) These ambas-sadors have done amazing work for the you and the

chamber. They humbly thank you for recognizing their recent efforts.

Seneca said, "When you are traveling on a road, there must be an end; but when astray, your wander-ings are limitless." We hope you find your success in 2020, and please be mindful, it may not come on the path first taken.

Thank you for your attention. We hope our group is helping make your chamber member-ship even more valuable.

Warmest regards, Sam Bruning, Ambassador Committee – Chair Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce - Board of

Directors, 2020-2021 Founder & Advisor, Southern Magnolia Investment

Did You Know…

A Chamber of Commerce is not a governmen-tal body or institution and has no direct role in the writing and passage of laws and regulations that affect businesses. It may however, act as a lobby in an attempt to get laws passed that are favorable to businesses. It is not a government agency, it is not funded by any government agency. All monies to further the organization and its community activities come from member-ship dues and fundraisers.

The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce plays a significant role in the community. As an advo-cacy group. It provides opportunities for mem-bers to stay connected, network, advertise, receive continuing education and support and give back to the community.

The Chamber is governed by a Board of Directors who guide the policy making. A staff of three people facilitates daily operations and activ-ities. The Hobe Sound Chamber is fortunate to have the support of dedicated volunteers who assist by helping to coordinate events, act as receptionists and managing the lobby visitor cen-ter. The Hobe Sound chamber would not exist as it does today without the devoted commitment of its volunteers, its growing number of members and its dedicated staff and Board of Directors.

As a child, you were probably often told to “Stand up straight” “Sit up straight!” But in reality, good posture is not about having a “straight” spine. Your family prob-ably had no idea exactly why they said that. The basis for good posture is maintaining what is known as a “neutral” spine.

A neutral spine has curves, a forward curve at the neck, a backward curve in the mid-back region and another forward curve in the lower back. These curves form an “S” shape viewed from the side. Good posture helps pre-vent chronic back and neck pain, or at least reduces the severity of any pain that might be present. Poor posture may increase the likelihood of conditions such as TMJ, chronic headaches, shoulder pain and other chronic ill-nesses and put imbalance in other areas of your body.

To maintain good posture while standing, it is impor-tant to: Position your head directly over your shoulders, which should be positioned directly over your pelvis. Keep some space between your feet, one foot slightly in front of the other. Keep your abdominal muscles taut (tighten the “core” muscles) and your bottom tucked in. Bend slightly at the knees. Try this method in front of the mirror so you can see what it looks like and how it feels.

Chiropractic care helps restore your spine’s natural

alignment to keep your nervous system that it protects, functioning cor-rectly. Good posture helps you retain the bene-fits of your chiropractic adjustments and helps you feel and look better! In fact, some say that good posture can take 10 years off your age and 10 pounds off your body-so give it a try! Maybe you will be one of those peo-ple who agree, or others will notice the difference in you!

Talk to us about ways to maintain good posture on your next visit. We’re only too happy to help! Give us a call and let us check you out!

Pedestrian Accidents Are On the Rise By Attorney Joshua Ferraro

On September 13, 2019, a twenty-four-year-old aspir-ing teacher lost her life when she was struck by a semi-truck as she walked across Military Trail. Subsequent investigations have revealed that the intersection itself may have contributed to the tragedy with neighbors not-ing that sidewalks are closed, there is ongoing construc-tion, and the crosswalk signals only work sporadically.

These factors coupled with increased traffic and a rise in distracted driving have made this intersection so dangerous that a nearby business routinely sends employees out to help pedestrians cross the street...and even offer some a ride rather than see them face the risks of walking.

Unfortunately, this tragedy has become all too com-mon as pedestrian deaths across the country have seen a sharp increase over the past several years. According to the U.S. Governors Highway Safety Association, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by more than 35% in just nine years from 2007-2018. Worse still, this rise continued into 2018, resulting in the highest number of pedestrian deaths in more than 25 years.

Florida is on the forefront of this epidemic, ranking number four in overall pedestrian fatalities. Although this ranking might be expected given the size of Florida’s pop-ulation (which ranks 3rd overall in the nation), it turns out that just five states (including Florida) make up near-

ly half of all pedestrian deaths across the entire country.

Although there is no definitive data establish-ing a reason behind the steep rise in pedestrian deaths over the past decade, it is interesting to note that during this same period overall deaths arising from auto-mobile collisions actually decreased. These con-flicting trends may be explained by the fact that the states with the highest rates of pedestrian death correlate to the fact that states with high population growth are not generally known for their walkability. In other words, as the populations and demographics of these states change, infrastructure mod-ifications to reflect a greater number of pedestrians have often lagged behind.

The increase in the number of pedestrians combined with the fact that infrastructure in many places (particu-larly in Florida) is not yet geared to walkability standards means that it is more important than ever that drivers stay focused and pay attention to their surroundings. Doing so may, quite literally, save a life.

Dear Members of Team MCSD, On Wednesday, February 14, 2018, our nation

watched in shock and sadness as an unthinkable tragedy unfolded at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Our world has not been and will never be the same.

As educators and employees of the Martin County School District, our ultimate priority is to educate all of our students for success while ensuring the continued safety and security of our campuses and facilities. The horrific events of that day compelled us to rethink everything we thought we understood about school safety and the mental wellness of children. We stood united – in grief, support and understanding – with our neighbors to the south in Broward County. Without the need for any formal words to be spoken, we rose to the poignant challenge issued by Stoneman Douglas students and staff in the wake of their heart-break and turmoil – never again.

In the last two years, our safety procedures and secu-rity measures have been analyzed, streamlined and implemented uniformly across not only the District, but also our nation. School and District-based staff have embraced the role of serving as confidants and mentors to students, introducing a variety of programs

and curriculums designed to assist them with their social and emotional well-being. We have formalized procedures that allow us to quickly identify at-risk stu-dents and provide them with the necessary support and resources. While the typical schoolhouse appears differ-ent from those many of us attended as children, we rec-ognize and understand that this is a requirement of the significant mission that has been entrusted to us – pri-oritizing the safety and well-being of our children. This charge remains at the forefront of all that we do each day in our mission to educate all students for suc-cess.

Today, we quietly reflect on both those who were injured and the 17 students and employees who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy, while reaffirming our commitment to the mission issued by survivors in the midst of their heartbreak. Never again. #MSDStrong

Take a moment of reflection and also one to cherish the many blessings we share each day in Martin County.

Sincerely yours, Laurie J. Gaylord Superintendent of Schools Martin County School District 500 East Ocean Blvd., Stuart, FL 34994 772-219-1200 Ext. 30222

SCORE Treasure Coast Enhances 2020 Workshop Content

SCORE Treasure Coast is pleased to announce some major enhancements to its planned 2020 workshop offerings that will provide more value to its small busi-ness clients. Based on client feed-back, the association evaluated its current offerings with an eye towards streamlining, updating, and enhancing content. SCORE has designed new workshops, and redesigned current workshop series, to better support the needs of entrepreneurs and small business owners in today’s ever-changing competitive market.

According to Bill Strouss, Vice-Chair of Client Services, a study of recent client evaluations and sur-veys regarding the general relevance of its programs lead to the changes. “We redesigned our two-flagship series of workshops: “Simple Steps for Starting Your Business,” and “Simple Steps to Growing Your Business,” updated the content, and condensed the number of workshops. This will allow our clients to move through these programs in a more efficient man-ner and enhance their value. In addition, we continue to review and revise all other workshop content to assure it remains current, relevant, and valuable to help businesses grow.”

Further, SCORE Treasure Coast found during its study the need to create new workshops to keep pace with the ever-changing markets and technologies. One of the new workshops held earlier this month, “Your Business on Google,” was well received and garnered almost unanimous 5-star reviews. Other specialized subject matter workshops have been added to its 2020 programs including “Building a Memorable Brand,” and “Understanding Financial Reports and Concepts” as well as other workshops on digital marketing, email marketing techniques that produce sales, and non-profit grant writing. “We feel these changes to our portfolio will exponentially improve the product offer-ings for our clients,” says Strouss.

SCORE Treasure Coast has posted the workshops of the first quarter of 2020 on its website: www.treasure-coast.score.org. SCORE will also communicate these workshops via email as well.

SCORE Treasure Coast is a resource partner of the Small Business Administration and covers Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, Glades and Okeechobee counties on the Treasure Coast. SCORE provides no-cost, con-fidential business mentoring with expertise in a wealth of business and business-related areas. SCORE men-tors and workshop presenters are active and retired business executives and small business owners helping businesses in their service area.

An Army veteran has a new set of wheels and a new outlook on getting an education thanks to Crown Car Care and Congressman Brian Mast (R-FL 18th District).

“It’s my honor to be here in Stuart to give my thanks to a fellow veteran for his service to our coun-try,” said Congressman Mast. “As we observe Veterans Day, we should all be reminded that those who serve do so in order to keep all of our residents free and our country safe.”

Army Sergeant Dennis Davis, who was on active duty from 2009-2015 and was Reserve Status 2015-2018 received a 2002 Ford Taurus donated by Crown Car Care in Stuart on behalf of Mona, Andy, and Andy III Salisbury.

“I wish to thank Congressman Mast for being here today. It means a lot to me as being in the Army was one of my lifetime dreams. Now, with the car I have today, I can continue my other dream of continuing my education. I want to say a very special ‘Thank You’ to Crown Car Care and the Salisbury for pro-viding the car that will help me reach a new stage in my life,” said Davis.

“We are extremely grateful to the veterans who serve our country. Without their service, we would not have the freedoms many of us take for granted. Our donation, just in time for Veterans Day, is a small token of how much we care about our valiant veterans. We also want to thank Rena Shpiruk of Elevate Hope for helping to find a veteran who could make the most use out of car,” said Todd Harris, founder of Crown Car Care in Stuart and Palm city.

to Know!

• Display Table Sponsorships are available for breakfasts. It is a chance to set up a nice display with respect to your business and talk one on one with breakfast attendees. We have room for up to 4 dis-play tables at each breakfast. The fee is just $50.00 and includes one breakfast.

• A few Sponsorships are still available for 2020 events. Many have already been filled. Now is the time to sign up if you are thinking of sponsoring a breakfast, a Coffee Talk, a New Member Orientation Luncheon, a Nibbles & Networking Luncheon, or a Business After Hours. Call Jan at 772-546-4724 or email [email protected] for available dates.

• The Ambassador Committee is once again plan-ning to distribute Welcome Bags to new members and new residents of the Hobe Sound Community. Members are welcome to provide 100 of a promo-tional item to be included in the bags. The fee to do this is $10.00 for all 100. Please don’t plan on dated items such as calendars because the bags last a long time and dated items often have to be removed and discarded. We have the bags. We just need the excit-ing items you’d like to include. If you choose to place

a coupon in the bags instead of a promotional item, the fee is $25.00. Call Jan at 772-546-4724 or email [email protected] for more information.

• There are only 3 more Chow Down Hobe Sound Food Truck events remaining for this season. Mark your calendar for Friday, February 28, Friday, March 27 and Friday, April 24. Each event will be happening from 5:00pm-9:00pm at J.V. Reed Park. Bring your chairs or your lawn blankets, your family and your friends. There’s lots of room for the kids to run around, vendors to peruse, and tasty treats for everyone to purchase and enjoy.

• It is the advertisers in The Pelican that make this publication possible. Please be sure to visit those businesses and if you’d like to be an advertiser, please let Jan know. A Rate Sheet with details and contract will be emailed to you. There are several ad sizes to fit any budget. Remember, 5,800 copies are distrib-uted 4 times a year. That’s a lot of exposure for your business for a very reasonable advertising rate.

And remember: Put your $$ where your ™ is – Do business with Chamber members!
