In the middle ages, people ate very differently than

they do today. Because of slow transportation and

inefficient preservation techniques, food was rarely

shipped across great distances, meaning that most

people had to make do with what was locally

available. Nonetheless, wealthy people were to

some extent exempt from this, and imported spices

were used extensively by the wealthy both as

ingredients in food and as medicines for their

ailments. People typically ate two meals a day,

dinner in the middle of the day and a light supper in

the evening, though most working men also had

breakfast in the morning. This was done for practical

reasons even though it was frowned upon by

contemporary moralists. The staple foodstuff of the

time was bread and other dishes made from cereals,

such as porridge and pasta, were also common.

According to the passage, one reason imported

food was rare in the middle ages was because ----.

32.

A) breakfast was generally not eaten

B) moralists frowned upon imported food

C) it was difficult to prevent food from spoiling

D) people of the time preferred foods such as bread

and porridge

E) people disliked the taste of preserved food

The passage states that in the Middle Ages,

breakfast was ----.

33.

A) considered necessary except for working men

B) considered immoral

C) unpopular despite encouragement from moralists

D) only eaten when imported food was

available

E) considered a form of medicine

The passage in general focuses on ----.34.

A) the history of food production in the middle ages

B) the use of spices as medicine

C) the immorality of breakfast

D) the use of food in the middle ages

E) early food preservation techniques

Economies of scale and monocultures go hand in

hand. The concept of a monoculture is that a farmer

would devote most, if not all, of his arable soil to the

cultivation of a single crop, be it wheat, potatoes,

barley, or pasture. This, in turn, translates into a

profitable economy of scale. The best way to think

of this theory is to compare it to another form of

mass production, like t-shirt manufacturing. It is

much less expensive to produce 100 tee-shirts then

it is to produce only one. Inputs like the blank shirts,

the ink used for printing, and even the printer itself

can be bought in bulk or only at one time, and the

sunk costs would be spread out more evenly among

the products, thus driving the price down. The same

rule applies for farming. If only one crop is grown,

there is only need for one kind of seed, one kind of

machine to cultivate, one type of pesticide, and one

form of fertilizer, thus making the final product much

cheaper than if it were grown on a farm with lots of

other crops, all requiring unique inputs.

According to the paragraph, the idea behind

monoculture ----.

29.

It is stated in the passage that the concept of

monoculture ----.

30.

The author points out in the passage that if a

farmer is growing only one type of crop, then he

is profiting from its inputs because ----.

31.

A) is the farmer's devoting himself to his land

B) is cultivating only one kind of crop on the land

C) seems logical in theory but not in practice

D) is planting a single crop every two years

E) has nothing to do with farmers

A) he doesn't need to pay for workers

B) one crop requires unique inputs, not various

C) he will not be dealing with different markets while

selling it

D) all the crops will mature at the some time

E) he won't waste time in cultivating in different

seasons

A) is producing less in number to prevent waste

B) contradicts the one in t-shirt manufacturing

C) is like t-shirt manufacturing because the more

you produce, the lower the cost becomes

D) is the cultivation of different kinds of crops, such

as wheat, potatoes, barley and pasture, all

together in an area

E) is cultivation of the crops by a machine in order

to quit using fertilizers or farmers

While folklore can contain religious or mythic

elements, it equally concerns itself with the

sometimes mundane traditions of everyday life.

Folklore frequently ties the practical and the

mysterious into one narrative package. It has often

been confused with mythology and vice versa,

because it has been assumed that any figurative

story that does not follow the dominant beliefs of the

time is not of the same status as those dominant

beliefs. In this case, the term "folklore" is being used

in a negative sense. That is, while the tales of Odin

the Wanderer have a religious value to the Norse

who created the stories, because it does not fit with

Christian ideas it is not considered "religious" by

Christians who may instead refer to it as "folklore."

According to the passage, the relationship

between mythology and folklore is ----.

38.

A) that folklore is older than mythology

B) folklore is religious whereas mythology is not

C) mythology is more figurative than folklore

D) folklore only occurs among the Norse

E) often confused and unclear

As stated in the passage, religious communities

may use the term “folklore” to ----.

39.

A) refer to their own sacred texts

B) belittle the sacred tales of other religious

groups

C) refer to secular mythological stories

D) refer to popular retellings of sacred texts

E) denote a tale's place in the dominant belief

structure of the time

We can understand from the passage that the

beliefs of the Norse ----.

40.

A) were different to standard Christian beliefs

B) were totally against their own folklore

C) in general, were carried over to Christianity

D) are still very important for various groups around the

world

E) were seldom mentioned in Norse folklore

Throughout the period we have been examining,

Britain and Germany were locked in industrial

competition. By 1914, both the United States and

Germany were outproducing Britain in a number of

areas. Yet the German challenge was, for the

British, the more significant. Industrial competition

with Germany helped reshape international political

alliances at the end of the century. Britain became

embroiled in a contest of naval superiority with

Germany and determined not to become

diplomatically or militarily isolated, moved to align

itself with its ancient enemy France against the

Germans.

It can be assumed from the passage that Britain

changed its political alliances because ----.

35.

It is stated in the passage that industrial

competition ----.

36.

One can understand from the passage that France

became allied with ----.

37.

A) its ancient enemy, the Germans

B) Britain, in order to isolate Germany

C) the United States, in order to overwhelm the British

economy with overproduction

D) Britain, although Germany wanted to become

allied with France

E) Britain, at the urging of the British

A) was more significant for Britain than Germany

B) led the United States to outproduce Germany

and Britain in many areas

C) led to a rearrangement of friendships between

countries

D) was devastating for the FrenchthE) was felt only by the end of the 20 century

A) it was afraid of industrial competition

B) Germany was threatening its power by building

ships

C) the British were tired of living on an island

D) Britain and Germany never had an industrial

competition

E) it was locked in an area with Germany

As an animal has to walk around to find food, plants

use tropisms. Plants can't change their place if they

happen to start growing where conditions are not

optimal. However, plants can alter their growth so

they can grow into more favourable conditions. To do

so, they have to detect where the conditions are

better and then grow in the appropriate direction.

One of the most commonly observed tropic

responses in plants is phototropism, in which plant

stems grow towards light. As anyone who has grown

plants near a window knows, the plants tend to lean

towards the window where the light is usually

stronger than inside the room. Another movement is

gravitropism, where a plant will grow so that it stays

oriented relative to the ground. Thus, if a plant is

knocked down the shoot will grow faster on the lower

side until the shoot is more-or-less standing up

again.

According to the principles stated in the passage,

an example of phototropism is when ----.

41.

The author mentions that phototropism ----.42.

Plants can alter their growth so they can ----.43.

A) reach water and clean air

B) grow out of a window and up the side of a building

D) creep around to find food

E) obtain better quality soil

A) is one of the most common tropic responses

B) only happens when a plant is knocked down

C) helps little plants grow out of the ground

D) is the synonym for photosynthesis

E) can be divided into two main movements

A) plants grow taller inside the house

B) plant owners talk to their plants to make them

grow

C) bad conditions and moist weather cause

problems

D) a plant grows toward the window where light is

E) a plant wraps itself around a stable support

structure
