WHAT IS REVISION?
RE – VISION – SEEING AGAIN
SO IT’S NOT:
Trying to learn lots of new topics
Trying to do two years’ work in two weeks
Trying to memorise notes or essays to reproduce in the exams
BUT IT IS:
FIXING IN YOUR MEMORY things that you know. Like a computer saving information on a disk for future reference.
LEARNING TO UNLOCK YOUR MEMORY in an exam. On a computer when you want a piece of data you have to call it up using a menu or code to access the information. Your mind works in the same way by responding to the prompts that it sees.
REVISION PLANNING
For each subject make a list of all the topic areas you think you’ll need to revise (check with the member of staff or against the exam syllabus).
Find out when your first exam is. Count the number of weeks from now until then.
Draw up a blank timetable for all the weeks you have available between then and now and the first exam. Divide each day into hourly or half hourly sessions.
4
Time Management
Reviewing previous work helps you move information from your short-term memory to your long term memory
1. Split your revision time into small sessions
2. Take small breaks
3. Review previous sessions
4. Briefly review previous days revision
5. Each week, dedicate a session to reviewing
your revision from the previous week
Breaks
Maths
Science
English
Other
In a 2 hour slot you’ll work faster and better if, instead of studying for two hours in one go, you:
Study 25 minutes, break for 5 minutes (4 times) or
Study 50 minutes, break for 10 minutes (twice)
WHERE SHOULD YOU REVISE?
Try and work in the same place each time and ensure that it has:
No distractions e.g. TV or family members.
A proper surface to work on at the right height.
Enough light to see by comfortably without peering.
5
REVISION TECHNIQUES
The most important thing is to DO something with the information that you have to learn – just reading through probably won’t help it to enter your memory.
You need to be able to REDUCE your notes from a whole book or set of notes to easy to manage pieces of information.
You need to be able to CATEGORISE the different parts of a topic so that an exam question is a trigger to you being able to quickly select the relevant knowledge.
TECHNIQUES
VISUAL techniques – use mind maps. COLOUR is also important as an additional way that your brain remembers – use highlighters.
ORAL techniques – try speaking as you learn or even recording yourself.
Use MNEMONICS – take the first letters of a list of words you need to learn.
TESTING – get others to test you on your notes.
FILE CARDS are useful for summarising topics.
6
Suggestions For Visual
Learners…
Find quiet
places to study
Try to visualize
information as images
Use visual materials
Write stories and illustrate them
Ensure you can
see your teacher
Use topic webs
Use computers to help youUse a highlighter
over important text
Take notes or ask for any handouts
Suggestions For Auditory
Learners…
Create jingles to
help you remember things
Use a recording device instead of taking notes
Take part in class discussion
Discuss your ideas
Read work aloudMake presentations
Suggestions For Kinesthetic
Learners …
Find quiet
places to study
Make your study
space interesting
Listen to music
when revising
Use a highlighter to help remember important material
Take frequent study breaks when revising
Move around the room when possible
Revise standing up
7
A SUGGESTED METHOD
Write out a long set of notes from everything you have on a topic.
Reduce this to 1 side of paper.
Then reduce it further to 4 or 5 file cards.
Finally, have one file card with an entire unit on it – it should only contain ‘trigger’ words that prompt you to remember.
LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF
You may not think this is important, but did you know:
Nearly a fifth of the calories we get from our diet is used by the brain.
Sitting exams is stressful and can weaken the immune system leaving it vulnerable to infections.
Tips• Drink water, stay hydrated
• Don’t forget to eat, eating nutritious
meals and snacks aid concentration
and your memory
• Reduce your stress levels by staying
physically active and socializing with
friends and family
• Sleep at regular times
8
IN THE EXAM ROOM
Common Exam Errors
• Panicking about time
• Not following the instructions on the paper
• Not answering the amount of questions
required to be answered
• Not answering the questions set
• Not giving enough time to each question
• Not reading the question properly
• Going off track
Exam Advice• Ensure you have the correct equipment and
dress appropriately
• Be early for your exam
• Do not take mobile phones into the exam
• When entering the room, do not speak
• Look for your candidate number and sit down
ready for instructions
HOW CAN I SUPPORT MY CHILD?
1. Monitor grade data. The grades that are sent out will give you a clear idea of progress made in each subject. Subject staff will be able to give you specific advice in order to maximise your child’s performance.
2. Check Homework Diaries. All homework should be recorded in the planner. If no homework is recorded, ask your child why? If you still have concerns, do not hesitate to contact the subject teacher at school.
3. Assist your child with homework. Your child may need additional resources to complete their homework or coursework effectively. You could also read through work to check for mistakes or to ensure that all tasks have been completed.
4. Inspect exercise books. This will give you a very good indication of how hard your child is working. You could even test them to see how well they have understood the subject matter.
5. Reward hard work. Research has shown that rewards or incentives work better than sanctions for motivation. You could reward your child for good pieces of work; time spent studying or meeting all deadlines.
9
6. Provide a suitable area in which to work. Ideally your child has a desk or table in an area free from distraction. Encourage your child to establish a routine when studying.
7. Buy Revision Guides. There are many good revision guides that can help reinforce work done in the classroom. Revision guides are mentioned on the subject pages of this booklet.
8. Access the Internet. There are some excellent websites that are both interactive and stimulating. Many have been included in the subject pages of this booklet. In addition you may wish to log onto the Examination Boards website for advice, past papers and mark schemes.

Students will be given practice exam papers to complete but there are no actual past papers
available for this course yet as the first sitting of the exam will be June 2017. Grade
boundaries for the new course are due to be announced in August 2017.
There are extensive resources based on the previous specifications in the Maths Pupil
Common Room on the VLE.
TIERS OF ENTRY:
Tiers of entry will be decided by staff using their professional judgement. They are subject
to change if data or individual performance indicates the need to do so. Tiers of entry are
normally finalised by Easter of Year 11. Please note that for the foreseeable future, only
students achieving 50% or better on the higher tier papers from the previous specification
will be considered for the higher tier. This reflects the significant increase in the level of
difficulty of the new specification.

DANCE
Revision for Written Examination
Written Examination: 20% OF GCSE (1 hour paper). The paper will compromise of shorter mark
answers that will add up to a total of 50 marks. They will need to show their knowledge of ALL areas
of the following professional works that we have been studying over the last 2 years:
Still Life at the Penguin Café by David Bintley And Swansong by Christopher Bruce
They need to be able to understand action/space/dynamics/relationships in specific sections of each
of the dances and also know information on set/costume/stimulus/lighting and music. The paper
will also test their general dance knowledge including choreographic devices, stimuli, structure, and
accompaniment.
Revision for Practical Examination MAKES UP 80% OF WHOLE GCSE
It is vital that the individual choreography and the group dance are ready IN ADVANCE and you will be
expected to meet with your dancers either before school, at lunch or after school after mocks have
been completed. The rehearsal process should be like revision. Remember this course is made up of
such a large % of practical – it needs to be prepared beforehand. Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!
Remember the examiner moderator is a stranger and you only have approximately 3 minutes to
impress them on the examination day.
Materials
The Dance exercise book as the first point of call for their revision and all the addition sheets, mocks
and examples should be attached in their books. For the written examination it is vital that the
students know the 2 professional works inside out. If they do not have a copy of these already this is
something we definitely recommend. DVDs of both works can be found on Amazon and from other
retailers.
Christopher Bruce's Triple Bill [DVD] Currently: £22.75 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Christopher-Bruces-Triple-Bill-
DVD/dp/B000FII18U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1357558982&sr=8-3

Cafe-Orchestra-NTSC/dp/B000Y351ZC/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1357559098&sr=1-1
There is also an AQA dance book that the students can use for revision. We do have copies of this that
we are prepared to loan out to the students but here is the reference if you wish to purchase.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AQA-GCSE-Dance-Students-
Book/dp/1408504197/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1357559280&sr=1-1
Important: Tuesday 18th
April 2017 All Dance will be in school (even
though it is a CPD day for others) for a full dress rehearsal. ALL their
work will be filmed and used as their exam evidence (in case of
illness or injury on the moderation day). ALL Dance students will
need to attend. Times will be given closer to the date.

Drama
Revision for Written Examination
Written Examination:
We will be giving out more mock questions that they can work on at their own pace. If they
need more this can be provided by the drama department. Basically they need to choose a
scene and try and write the 20 mark question on EACH scene in the play! Pick a scene and do
a mock….we suggest to get all the tricky scenes out of the way first. For section 2
(evaluation) students can hand DRAFTS to either drama teacher. This can only be completed
AFTER the practical examination (which should be just after Easter.
Revision for Practical Examination
Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse! Remember the examiner visiting is a stranger and you need to
show your very best work. Your lines need to be learnt to an impeccable standard,
Exam Preparation/Revision ideas
The most useful** - Practice mocks for the 10 and 20 mark Our Town questions. If
they are completed in free time we are happy to mark these. Please see your drama
teachers.
Character profiles: A4 sheet per character adding details on movement, voice,
costume choices, relationship with others and key quotes (explained)
Creating a definitions booklet or flash cards of the key drama terminology (especially
vocal, physical and atmosphere). You can add key examples on the back of the flash
card from specific sections of Our Town.
.
Materials
They need to use their drama exercise book as the first point of
call for their revision and all the additional sheets, mocks and
examples should be attached in their books.
They should also have a scene-by-scene self-completed guide
where they can show their creative overview of each and every
scene – this is in a photocopied format. If this is incomplete – this
is useful revision to help understand each scene
Our Town by Thornton Wilder : This is the set text and students
have all been lent a copy of this from the drama department.
They need to read this on their own at least 3 more times before
the exam. It is only a short text and would not take very long to
do.

Exam Preparation
Lots of revision throughout the course will help you to do your best in Geography. This will
need to be increased as you get closer to the mocks and final exams. Remember to use the
Progress Trackers which are on the VLE (Fronter) to focus your revision. This will help you
work out the topics that you feel most secure with and identify what still needs further
learning. Revision should be focused on the theory and case studies taught during Years 10
and 11. The more specific facts and details you can provide about located examples the
better.

Exam Preparation
Your revision should centre on the CCCS History Personal Learning Challenge Booklet. This
outlines all of the knowledge and skills you need to revise for each exam. You must cover
ALL of it before the summer so start early. The key to success in GCSE History is revising lots
of factual knowledge in your own time. You should focus on learning the key dates, events,
places and people. Make mind maps or flash cards for each topic then test yourself
repeatedly. You should try to do at least 30 minutes revision EVERY DAY. You should also
attempt lots of exam practice using past papers. There are plenty of practice questions for
all parts of the course in the PLC booklet.

Pupils will complete another 3 pieces of Controlled Assessment in Year 11 which WILL CONTRIBUTE to
their final grade, each piece makes up 15%. Please continue to ensure your child prepares thoroughly
for every single one by diligently completing homework as set and revising for two weeks before the
controlled assessments. For the listening and reading papers candidates need to learn vocabulary for
recognition. Lists are compiled from past papers and the textbook or can be found in revision guides.
‘Little and often’ works best. A sensible amount would be 10 – 15 new words revised for 15 minutes
until all meanings are learnt. This should be done throughout the year and must be the main focus of
pupils’ revision after February half term.
