Andy Owen is an experienced teacher and expert author. He has also acted as a consultant to the WJEC and has been involved in the latest revisions of both their specifications. He is currently teaching in a Specialist Humanities College and has published several textbooks since the early 1990s.

“I was thrilled to be asked by the WJEC to help structure the new Specification A and I have really enjoyed writing this book. I was closely involved in the revision of the specification and the whole project has been an exciting opportunity to retain the important elements of a traditional GCSE geography course whilst also addressing some serious contemporary issues relating to poverty, development, health and climate change. I hope this book will help students to make sense of our fast changing and globalising world and that it

inspires them as well as providing them with the necessary skills and understanding they need to succeed in the course.

I have taught the existing ‘Avery Hill’ course for more than 15 years, so when the specification was revised I was delighted to have the opportunity to revise this text for GCSE Geography for WJEC Specification B. This new book reflects the distinctive issues based ethos of the specification. It supports students in dealing with decision making exercises and also focuses on a few carefully chosen case studies to support their knowledge and understanding. I am very proud of the finished product and will enjoy using it with my GCSE students.”

“Whenever I write, I always think of my own classroom first. If what I am writing is effective, innovative and challenging for my pupils then I have done a good job. I must enjoy using the material and it must be better than what I used before. These geography texts do this. Describing processes and then allowing pupils to discover and explain the patterns they see before them has been at the core of my teaching. In these texts I was able to add up-to-date factual information and new Case Studies that allow pupils to make sense of the World around them.”

Colin Lancaster is an experienced teacher and author and has been working alongside Andy Owen for five years. His present role is as Professional Tutor to trainee teachers. He has previously worked with Channel 4 as the teacher advisor and design consultant on the award-winning CD-ROM The Amazonian Experience.

Stuart Currie has been involved with Avery Hill Geography since its inception in the early 1970s. He is an experienced teacher, coursework moderator and examiner who has been instrumental in many of Avery Hill’s developments. His current work furthers the ethos and principles of Avery Hill through his involvement in the development of the WJEC Geography Specification B, the new specification that derives directly from Avery Hill. Stuart has written a number of textbooks and revision guides, all of which adopt the same student-centred approach to learning.

“There are two strands to examination success in any subject. The first, quite obviously, is for the students to develop as full a competence in the subject as they are capable of doing. The second, and equally important strand, is to be able to fully demonstrate these abilities throughout the assessment process.

This Revision Guide is not a factual guide to geography in general, neither is it intended to replace the teacher. I have, rather, written it only for students of WJEC Specification B with the aim of encouraging them to use their classroom learning to explore and practice activities and approaches designed to maximise their examination performance. The emphasis is on actively engaging the students in tasks designed to reinforce their classroom learning and to fully familiarise them with the variety of techniques used by their examiners.”
