GCSE Physical Education

Guidance for the assessment of Rugby Introduction As of the 1st of September 2021, Rugby Union remains under restrictions nationally which prevent candidates from completing assessment in this sport against our existing marking grid. If you are planning for rugby union to be part of your centre sample, we need you to notify us that your submitted video evidence will show adaptations to the sport in line with this guidance. You can do this using this link. When prompted, please select “Adaptations of the Assessment Criteria” when prompted from the drop down.

The Rugby Union Roadmap link Ready4Rugby Link Adapting the game The return of rugby union nationally and importantly in schools will initially be through non-contact rugby focused on Ready4Rugby, a non-contact game, enabling two teams of up to 10 players to engage in match activity. Ready4Rugby is a new and exciting non-contact game enabling two teams of up to 10 players to engage in training and match activity and is suitable for the school environment. Any return to playing rugby union in any format is a decision for individual schools and clubs to make, and they must continue to follow government Coronavirus guidelines along with any local government lockdown restrictions that may be introduced. When assessing your candidates in rugby union, you must use the assessment criteria in the Practical Performance Assessment Criteria document Link

At the moment the National Governing Body will only allow two teams of up to 10 players to engage in training and match activity in their own club environment, therefore if teachers are going to deliver and assess rugby union, presently the Ready4Rugby rules must be adhered to. Skills in isolation/unopposed situations

Candidates must demonstrate 4 skills from the requirements. The only skill that cannot be shown is a scrum, therefore all candidates should be able to demonstrate and have evidence of performing at least 4 of the other skills. Applications of skills, techniques and decision making under pressure during a conditioned practice and conditioned/formal/competitive situation

There is guidance on the RFU website for Ready4rugby about:

• Pressure zone • Attack • Defence

Our assessment criteria states ‘Players must participate in conditioned practices and a full-sided competitive game to meet the criteria for the second column’. However, at the moment this is not possible. Adaptations Following the NGB guidelines for Ready4Rugby and using the assessment criteria a candidate could demonstrate the following:

Criteria that can be assessed Criteria that cannot be assessed Handling (offloads) Catching (from pass, high ball) Tackling - touch Evading (side step, swerve, hand off) Intercepting Contributing to open play (tackling (touch) Contributing to open play – ruck, maul Contributing to set play/moves (restart, scissors, line out) Contributing to set play/moves (scrum) Demonstrate communication and influence on team performance contributing to strategy of tactics

Applying the team strategy in open play and set play Decision making Ability to adapt to the environment Adhering to rules, health and safety guidelines, and considering appropriate risk management strategies

Example: Level 4, 16-20 marks

The candidate should be able to demonstrate everything in the assessment criteria using the guidance from the NGB. The only difference is that the game will be a maximum of 10 a side and will be non-contact.
