INTRODUCTION

The Internship Program (IP) forms an important component of education at GBS. It is an

attempt to bridge the gap between the academic institution and the corp orate world. At

GBS, Student Interns undertake a 12-week IP in companies during the intervening period

  between the close of Semester II and the commencement of Semester III. The Program

carries a weightage of six credit units. The IP, which would be a simulation of real work 

environment, requires the Student Interns to undergo the rigor of professional  

environment, both in form and in substance. In the process, it provides an opportunity for 

the Student Interns to satisfy their inquisitiveness about the corporate world, provides

exposure to technical skills, and helps them to acquire social skills by being in constant

interaction with the professionals of other organizations. At GBS, the IP is an opportunity

to satiate the student’s curiosity. The student is expected to actively participate / take

ownership of the internship, and ex perience the professional environment, thus making

the internship meaningful to both the company with which the student works and also to

the student himself to further his/her career prospects.

Various functionaries such as Head of the Institution, Campus Head, Faculty Guides,

Student Representatives and the back-of fice staff shall ensure proper coo rdination and

smooth conduct of IP. A Faculty Guide shall help the Student Interns in the successful

completion of the IP. A Company Guide also guides the Student Interns and helps the

Faculty Guide in monitoring the Student Interns’ progress.

OBJECTIVE S OF IP

The objectives of the Internship Program are – 

• To provide an opportunity to the Student Interns to practice the concepts learnt in

real-life situations 

• To sensitize the Student Interns to the nuances of workplace by assigning time- 

 bound projects in a company 

• To create an awareness in the Student Interns about their stren gths and

weaknesses in the work environment

• To provide the Student Interns a platform to take up on-th e-job Executive

Training and develop a network which will be useful in enhancing their career 

 prospects.

To achieve the above objectives, the IP focuses on Ex ecutive Training.

Executive Training:

The Student Intern is required to undertake on-the job assignments along with day-to-day

functions of the company, both at the assistance and the execution level. This will help 

the Student Intern to gain a deeper understanding of the work, culture, targets, deadlines,

work pressure, etc. of an organization. Executive Training involves teamwork, goal

orientation and managing the interpersonal relationships. Therefore, they help th e

Student Interns to develop the qualities required for an Executive/Manager. A good

Internship Program undertaken with all the seriousness provides an excellent learning

opportunity to the Student Intern and also paves the way for pre- placement.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

IP can broadly be classified into two phases viz. (i) Orientation in the Company and (ii)

Executive Training.

Orientation in the Company

During the first two weeks of IP, the student inter n shall undergo an extensive orientation

  program in the IP Comp any. During this period, the student intern shall understand the

company, its customers and the competitors. The study don e during this period shall help

in the preparation of 3CET report. He/She shall thoroughly study the financial statements

of the compan y for the past couple of years, understand the policies of the company,

study the macro-environment in which the industry is operating and has to conduct a

SWOT analysis. The student intern shall also get oriented to various departments of the

company and get to know the key functionaries. The student interns shall meet these

functionaries with prior appointment and understand various perspectives from them in

managing their departments. This provides a unique opportunity for the interns to gain

insights into managing the departments directly from the head of those departments. The

student interns shall also get to know their company guide and other 

executives/supervisors who shall be closely guiding them during the period of IP. The

Student Intern shall also understand the organizational structure and the top management

team including the Chairman, Managing Directo r, Chief Executive Officer, etc. By the

end of the orientation program in the compan y, the Student Intern should be able to

clearly state his/her business objectives which would include specific and measurable

targets to be achieved during the Executive Training, break-up of tar gets on a weekly

 basis, etc. The Faculty Guide shall facilitate the orientation program at the company. It is

suggested that the orientation program be prepared in advan ce in consultation with the

company authorities and the same to be circulated to the Student Interns for smooth

implementation.

Executive Training

Executive Training may stretch from the beginning to the end of IP. During this period,

the Student Intern would be assigned various tasks by the organizations, which are part of 

the day-to-day functioning of the department within the organization. Executive Training

gives direct exposure to execution and support the functions of the department. It gives a

flavor of teamwork, organizational culture, team dyn amics, result orientation,

organizational pressures, complexities in achieving the desired results, etc. A Student

Intern should take this as a learning experience and be ambitious of achieving the desired

targets or accomplishing the required tasks, through professionalism and business

acumen. Executive Training provides a good scope for dev eloping the necessary 

managerial skills and a positive attitude in the students.

SELECTION OF FACULTY GUIDES

Faculty Guides play a very significant role during IP. Through continuous guidance and 

mentoring, they help Student Interns achieve the objectives of IP. They create the linkage

  between the Company Guides and the Student Interns. The following guidelines are

suggested in the selection of Faculty Guides:

• A Faculty Guide should be able to identify suitable companies and generate

internship offers.

• The Faculty Guide should have abilities to maintain relationship with the

company executives. 

• A Faculty Guide shall guide and mentor up to 30 Student Interns. 

• The allotment of Student Interns to a Faculty Guide should not be disturbed 

during the period of IP. This is to ensure focused implementation of IP. However,

in exceptional circumstances, a Student Intern may be shifted f rom one Faculty 

Guide to another with a prior written approval fro m the Head of the campu s.  

• Similarly, the allocation of Faculty Guides should not be changed during the

 period of IP 

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

IP is a unique opportunity to the Student Intern to get exposed to the corporate culture  

and acquire professional experience by implementing the theoretical concepts learnt in

the classroom. Durin g IP the student intern will be developin g his/her managerial skills

along with other requisite skills. The endeavor of the Student Intern during this period is

to optimize his/her learning and convert the IP opportunity into a placement opportunity

through dedication, commitment and hard-work. This requires discipline, positive

attitude, focused approach and inquisitiveness to learn.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Absolute attendance (100%) is a symbol of dedication and commitment of a Student

Intern. Unless there is a dire need for leave, the Student Intern should not be granted

leave. Dedicated effort from the Student Intern paves the way for healthy relationship

with the or ganization and enhances the placement opportunity. Analysis of the IP

experiences proves that those with good attendance record performed better during IP and

secured better Pre-placement offers (PPO). With a view to encourage their attendance

and reward those who are regular, we have introduced the following guidelines: The

attendance system followed in the company in which IP is being pursued should be

followed by the Student Intern. Student Intern is permitted to avail a maximum of five

days leave durin g the period of IP with prior approval from the Compan y Guide and

Faculty Guide

For all the leaves availed beyond the stipulated five days, there will be a penalty in terms

of marks. Absence without prior approval will be viewed seriously and may even lead to

termination of IP.

Availing of leave(s) by a Student Intern is subject to the following condition(s):

a. Applications for leave shall be made only in unavoidable circumstances and in the

 prescribed format.

 b. Student Intern is permitted to avail leave for a maximum of five days without any

 penalty. 

c. Beyond five days, there will be a penalty of 5 marks per each day of leave from

the aggregate IP marks.

d. Leave beyond 10 days (including leave with and without penalty) during the 

entire period of IP is strictly not allowed and would lead to disqualification of IP 

Ex: Suppose a Student Intern avails leave for 8 days du ring IP. If the final marks of the Intern 

are 180 out of 300, then he/she would suffer a penalty of 15 marks (i.e. 5 marks × 3 days).

Consequently his/her final marks will be 180 –15 = 165. Grading for IP p erformance will be 

 based on 165 marks (and not on 180 marks).

TRANSFERS DURING IP

Transfer of Student Intern from One Company to another Company:

Once a Student Intern registers with a company, he/she should continue with the same

company till the completion of IP. Under any circumstances the student will not be

allowed to change his / her company once registered.

CONDUCT AND BEHAVIOR 

The Student Interns must bear in mind that they are the ambassadors of GBS and conduct

themselves in a manner befitting the GBS standards. The GBS expects the Student

Interns to maintain high professional and social standards. GBS expects that the Student 

Interns shall at all times, during IP, conform to the rules and regulations of his/her place

of work. It is particularly important to be regular, punctual, obedient, honest and sincere

at work. Unprofessional behavior, dishonesty, misconduct, indiscipline, irregularity at

work and unsatisfactory performance will lead to cancellation of internship of the

student. Consequently, the Student Interns will not be permitted to register for Semester 

III resulting in the loss of at least one academic year besides any other form of action that

GBS might deem fit.

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR STUDENT INT ERNS DURING IP

Do’s:

Student Interns should – 

Get an overview of the Company/Industry in which they are placed. This includes

understanding the core business of the compan y, organizational chart, key personnel in

the company, manufacturing units, marketing channels, financial policies, etc. obtain a

copy of the latest annual report and analyze the financial statement, wherever possible.

Make an analysis of the company vis-à-vis the industry and p repare SWOT analysis.

Always maintain formal dress code. 

Always be polite in his/her dealings and maintain cordial relationship with the

Company Executives. 

Always transact all business transactions as per the laid down policies of th e

company and commitments made to the customer are fulfilled. 

Always be positive and open to suggestions.

Always make a note of the important points during meetings/discussions.

Get in touch with the Faculty Guide, if the situation warrants.

Maintain strict confidentiality of the company’s information. 

Consult the Faculty Guide or refer to textbooks to reinforce r elevant con cepts. 

Always submit bills in time when reimbursement is to be claimed.

Get conversant with the company’s policies/rules before incurring expenditure.

Always be present whenever the Faculty Guide visits the company. 

Focus on assignment and complete the allotted individual tasks allotted on 

schedule.

Don’ts:

Student Interns should not – 

Criticize the company’s policies and the Company Executives. 

Criticize or make adverse comments about GBS and/or the Faculty Guid e.

Attend the office in informal dress.

Get into arguments and lose temper.

Misuse the facilities offered by the company. 

Go to meetings and presentations unprepared or ill-prepared 

Be late. 

Lave the office without prior permission from the Company Guide. 

Be impolite or rude to the Company Executives. 

Exceed the mandate given by the Company Guide and collect information that is 

confidential in nature. 

Hold back any material/equipment/accessories provided b y the compan y on a

returnable basis. 

Collect cash / Cheques in the personal name for any business transactions.

Borrow money or any other personal effects of the Company Ex ecutives.

Interfere in third party assignments. 

Encourage friends visiting workplace during office hours and cause 

inconvenience to others. 

Earnings:

  Normally interns are rewarded by the company through payment of stipend, incentive,

commission, bonus, etc during internship program to motivate and compensate the

students. The stakeholders of internship program in general and faculty guid es in

  particular shall work to maximize the earnings per student. All students must receive

some earnings during internship program. Reimbursement towards local conveyance, out

of pocket expenses, traveling allowances shall not be considered for the purpose of

computing earnings. The FG should submit a statement of earnings certified b y the

Company Guide and the recipients and the proof of receipt of amount in the Internship

Certificate.

Where there is no earning potential for an intern, learning value and the final placement

  possibility should be strong in the IP Compan y. Letters confirmin g earning potential per 

candidate and the details thereof should be submitted to the Dean.

Allocation ratios:

a. Internship Coordinators to Faculty Guides ratio is 1:8 (max).

 b. Faculty Guide to Students ratio is 1:30 (max) [1:15 is preferable].

c. Company Guide to Students ratio is 1:5 (max).

d. Company to Students ratio is 1: 10 (ideal). However, this should not exceed 1:20

Fortnight review meetings shall be conducted by the Faculty Guide with the Company

Guide at the company premises. There must be a minimum of 5 such review meetings.

The agenda for review meetings would include performance of the students on Executive

Training undertaken by students, other academic/placement related matters, etc. Faculty

Guides must ensure that these meetings are useful, productive, and the Company Guid e

finds value in them.

AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN IP

The objectives of Award for Excellence in IP to the students and faculty guides are:

• Help in building GBS brand among students;

• Help in motivating the faculty guides for better performance and help bu ild their 

self esteem; 

• Motivate students to do well in their IP; and

• Involvement of alumni in IP to improve GBS reunions.

The Award:

• Awards are given to the best performing students and faculty guides at an IP. 

• Each award winning student and faculty guide would receive a cash award of a 

citation and a memento.

Selection Process:

At the IP Campus a panel consisting of Dean and Internship Coordinator would shortlist

two best performers for every hundred students. Those who are short listed would then be

evaluated by a panel of experts. The final list of winners would be announced b y the

Panel. The awards would be presented at a fun ction organized by GBS. 

Responsibilities:

The IP Campus shall – 

• Ensure generation of internship offers of desired quality and in sufficient 

numbers.

• Ensure smooth settlement of student interns by timely allocation of internships,

 proper induction and smooth execution. 

• Ensure smooth and effective implementation of Summer Term at which this

facility is offered. 

• Endeavor to achieve the goals set for IP-2010.

• Assign responsibilities to the concerned Internship Coordinators, Faculty Guides,

etc. 

• Meticulously implement weekly IP reporting system and maintain the records 

thereof. 

• Enable evaluation of various components of IP as per the calend ar given with all 

the fairness it requires. 

• Keep the motivation levels of the Student Interns high b y constant interaction and 

conducting student activities.

• Term and brief them on the classroom instruction, evaluation 

• Requirements and the need for achieving minimum academic requirements. 

• Provide necessar y orien tation to the Student Intern on IP and the corporate 

expectations.

• Monitor the progress of its Student Interns placed at different IP Companies 

• Contribute towards meeting the IP objectives by giving necessary feedback/inputs 

to IP Campus.

• Obtain a copy of the weekly report and monitor the progress of its Student 

Interns.

• Provide counseling to its Student Interns through telephone or e-mail, where 

necessary. 

PEOPLE AND THEIR ROLES

Head of Campus:

Head of the Campus shall – 

• Be responsible for the overall compliance of IP guidelines.

• Ensure generation and allocation of internships to the student at IP campuses as 

 per the schedule. 

• Ensure smooth and effective implementation of Summer Term at the 

• Campuses at which this facility is offered.

• Be responsible for overall achievement of goals and targets set for IP-2010 

• Identify competent Internship Coordinator and the Faculty Guides as required. 

• Ensure timely submission of various reports, retu rns, evaluation and reporting of  

marks.

• Visit IP Company twice during the IP period. 

• Review the progress of activities at IP campuses on a weekly basis.

• Enable the required infrastructure for the use of Internship Coordinator, Faculty 

Guides and Student Interns.

• Set up an efficient back-office for smooth administration and information flow. 

• Ensure eff ective management of corporate relations by the Faculty Guides and

Internship Coordinators. 

• Ensure the fortnightly visit of Faculty Guide to the compan y for review of IP with 

Company Guide. 

• Arrange for and facilitate the IP Regional Review Meeting once in a month.

• Internship Coordinators and Faculty Guides shall participate in the meeting.

The Faculty Guide shall –

• Identify suitable companies for generation of Internship offers.

• Liaison with company executives to generate desired quality internships. 

• Arrange for the selection process of internships. 

• Procure offer letters clearly detailing the internship including earning 

• Potential through stipend, incentives, etc. 

• Ensure signing of code of conduct by the IP Company

• Ensure generation of minimum 30 IP offers. 

• Prepare a paper on the profile of the industry, with which he/she is associated,

• Submit a Weekly Report to the Head of the Campus. 

• Familiarize Student In terns with the evaluation process, parameter s and

schedules.

• Keep the Student Interns informed about their performance/progress in the IP, 

their strengths and weaknesses as observed through various evaluation 

components and also suggest ways for improvement.

• Plan for mock presentations by Student Interns at interim and final stages of 

evaluation. This would help overcome an y shortcomings observed in the Student 

Interns, when the presentation is made to the target audience. 

• Be a part of all formal evaluations of Student Interns. 

• Guide/facilitate Student Interns in achieving the targets/tasks in Executive

Training as assigned by the IP Company. 

• Tracking the performance of Executive Training has to be done on a weekly basis 

in the prescribed format. 

• Communicate marks obtained by the Student Interns in various components of IP

through e-mail. 

• Review the performance of Student Interns at a company at every alternative 

week in consultation with the Company Guide.

• Conduct two review meetings at the company along with the Company Guide and 

Internship Coordinator. 

• Effectively manage interface with the compan y and relationship with the 

Company Guides.

Provide continuous guidance as follows to the Student Interns during IP:

a. Counseling to familiarize them with new environment. 

  b. Explaining them the need to get acquainted with the company before

commencement of IP. 

c. Elucidate with proper examples the need and benefits of effective implementation

of the guidelines. 

d. Make them aware of dignity of work. 

e. Counsel them so as to help them overcome their day-to-d ay professional and

social problems. 

f. Continuously monitor them and perform frequent checks on the status of IP.

g. Continuously interact with the Compan y Guide so as to enhance the learning by

Student Interns during IP. 

h. Counsel the interns who are registered for Summer Term to attend the classes and 

evaluation compon ents with an objective of achieving minimum academic 

requirements.

Faculty Guides have to visit the Company Guide at the company premises once in a

fortnight and r eview the performance of each Student Intern and file a report in a

standard form with Internship Coordinator. As far as possible, Faculty Guide should take

the initiative to hold discussions with the Company Guide along with the Student Interns.

This would help the Faculty Guide to assess the student’s progress in his/her respectiv e 

  project, the quality and the quantity o f work put in b y the Student Interns. These

discussions would also help the Faculty Guide to judge the behavior of the Student

Interns in the company, and the relationship the Student Interns maintain with the other 

executives/staff of the company.

Company Guide:

The Company Guide enables the Executive Tr aining for the intern in the company.

He/she shall normally be a qualified MBA or is a middle level executive with above 6

years of experience in the industry.

Student Intern:

The Student Interns are assigned to a Faculty Guide at the beginning of the IP. They must

discuss with the Faculty Guide the various components of Executive Training and seek 

clarifications on any matter related to them.

The Student Interns shall – 

• Strictly follow the IP guidelines and code of cond uct.

• Prepare Industry/Company profile as soon as possible after commencement of IP 

and submit it to the Faculty Guide.

• In the initial stages of IP, understand the 3CET of a company and study the annual 

reports of the company to understand various policy issues and financial matters 

and prepare reports as required.

• Achieve the go als/targets set for the IP by actively participating in the executive 

training assigned.

• Attend the training sessions as planned by the IP campus. 

• Have continuous interaction with the Faculty Guide and the Company Guide. 

• Report constraints if any, to the Faculty Guide without delay. 

• Submit reports at various stages strictly as per IP Calendar.

• Take presentation as an opportunity to impress the host company and ensure its 

success.

• Submit weekly on-line IP progress report to the Faculty Guide. 

• Endeavor to secure pre-placement offer in IP Company through dedicated work  

and result orientation. 

• Achieve a minimum of ‘C’ grade in Internship Program 

Training Program during IP

Training sessions conducted during IP have a useful impact on the student intern.

Training sessions plann ed strategically and aligned to the go als of IP would pay rich

dividends to various stakeholders in terms of achievement of higher targets during

Executive Training, higher per capita earning, more Pre Placement Offers (PPO), etc. The

Training Sessions will focus on the Selling Skills, with Resume Preparation, Group

Discussions and Personal Interview.

Orientation Program

At the IP Campus, the Head of the Campus shall arrange an orientation program for the

Student Interns. Guidance on the orientation program may be obtained from the Dean.

These orientation programs need to be customized while the overall objective is the

smooth settlement of Student Interns at the IP Companies and effective un derstandin g of  

the Executive Training. The orientation program should include a session on achieving  

‘C’ grade and abov e in the Internship Program and the need for achieving the minimum

academic requirements so as to progress into semester III. The orientation program

should include a PowerPoint presentation. Attendance is compulsory for orientation

 program.

Guidelines for finalizing titles for executive Training

Faculty Guides are responsible for providing necessary inputs and for guid ing the interns 

for framin g appropriate title for the Executive Training. The Faculty Guides are required

to validate the titles for Executive Training for their respective Student Interns.

The Campus shall constitute a panel of three or four members comprising of two to three

Faculty Guides and an Internship Coordinator who will be scrutinizing all the titles for  

the Executive Training and approve the same.

• Organization where Executive Training is to be carried out.

• Measurable/quantifiable targets for Executive Training (preferably in monetary

terms)

• Clear identification of Product/service related to the achiev ement of tar get. 

• Territorial description where the operations have to be carried out to achieve

targets.

• Period during which targets are to be achiev ed.

Example of title for Executive Training:

• Selling of 10 insurance policies worth Rs.60, 000 in 45 days for M/s. Aviva Life

Insurance Compan y at Hyd erabad.

Example of title which is not suitable for Executive Trainin g:

• Checking the Financial Advisor Satisfaction. 

Evaluation

The IP carries a weightage of 6 credits and therefore the evaluation of IP is critical to

Student Interns’ overall performan ce. The following components shall be considered

while evaluating the student interns:

• Evaluation schedule as prescribed in these guidelines shall be strictly

implemented. No stakeholder shall extend evaluation schedule.

• Non-submission of any reports or not attending th e presentation should be treated 

as ‘Absence’ for the evaluation component which will lead to ‘Not Cleared’

grade.

• Any report or presentation submitted by a student is not evaluated b y the

concerned evaluators it will be treated as ‘in complete’. In such a case the 

evaluator must explain reason for not completing the evaluation component.

• ‘Zero’ marks shall not be awarded fo r non-submission of reports or for not

making a presentation. ‘Zero’ marks should be awarded only if the reports 

submitted or presentations made are so poor and that the intern deserves ‘zero’ 

mark.

• Evaluation of a component shall not be done, unless evaluation of previous

components is completed. Where the pr evious component of evaluation is marked 

as ‘NC’, student shall be issued a letter to repeat IP, wher e as in case of  

‘incomplete’ evaluation, the faculty guide must co mplete evaluation. 

• The evaluation will be based on the performance of the Student Intern during the

Executive Training. The evaluation shall be carried out at different stages viz.  

Initial evaluation, interim evaluation and final evaluation.

Weightage for Evaluation

Overall, 100% of the weightage is given to Executive Training. The various stages of  

evaluation and weightage at each stage are given below:

Components of Evaluation – 

Initial E valuation: E xecutive Training Stage – 25 Marks

Report on “Overview of the Company including 3C report (Company, Customers and

Competitors) & SWOT analysis, Who’s who, Business objectives, Natur e of the work,

Interim Evaluation – 50 Marks

Assessment is based on achievement of targets/tasks with prorata basis, Definition, scope

of the project, research design, tools used, sampling, qu estionnaire, calendar etc.

Evaluation is done by the panel as detailed in these guidelines.

Final Draft – 50 Marks

Assessment is based on achievement of targets/tasks with prorata basis, Planning

efficiency, resource mobilization, content, quality of the report, compliance to guidelines,

graphs, tables, overcoming limitations, strategies applied etc. Evaluation is done by the

 panel as detailed in these guidelines.

Final Evaluation (Final copy) – 25 Marks

The final copy of the work done till the end of the project including the mid course

corrections, faculty guide recommendations, updating in the data etc.

Final Report of the Internship Project – 150 Marks (Report - 100 Marks ,

Presentation – 50 Marks):

The final repot of the project has to be submitted with in 2 weeks of the completion of the

  period. The final report should consist of nature of the job, research methodology, the

quality of the data collected from the primary source, questionnaire, analyses,

interpretation of the data, recommendations, suggestions, conclusions, etc. 

Student has to give the presentation of his report to the panel which includes faculty

guide, Dean, Director and external resource person. The student will be judged on his

communication skills, presentation skills and objection handling.

Evaluation of Executive Training

Initial Evaluation

The initial evaluation is conducted based on a report containing the following:

An Overview of IP Company

This shall have two parts viz., (i) 3CET Report, covering the compan y, the customer, the

competition, the environment and the technology and (ii) a detailed SWOT analysis of 

the company.

3CET Report

The Company

In the initial days of commencement of IP, a Student Intern should understand the

company as a whole by going through v arious departments of the company. In addition,

the Student Intern should also understand the position of the company vis-à-vis the

industr y in which the company is operating. In trying to understand the compan y, the

following aspects may be studied: Marketing: Product portfolio, Distribution network,

Sales force, Pricin g, Promotion strategies, Customer service, Market str ucture, Market

share, Competition, Measurement metrics. Human Resources: Organization structure,

Organization chart, Senior management, Departments and Functions, Staff strength,

Recruitment, Training and Development, Appraisal and Retention practices etc.

Retention issues, Measurement metrics. Operations: Functions, Processes, Facilities, 

Measurement metrics, Finance: Capital structure, financial ratios, Performance metrics

etc. Any other relevant function.

The CustomersDuring the initial period of IP, the Student Intern should understand the products of the  

company and the customer profile. Effort should be made on various aspects of 

understanding the customers, their segmentation, product positioning, buying pattern, etc.

The Competition

A Student Intern is also expected to understand the competitors for the products marketed

 by the IP Company.

The Environment

It is essential for the intern to understand the macro and micro economic environment in

which the IP Company is operating. The national and international environment which

has an influence on the Company’s performance also needs to be studied.

The Technology

Student intern should focus on the technology platforms and specific ERP packages

relevant for the Company. it is important to get insights into the pre and post-technology

 productivity of people, customer service, grievan ce redressed, etc. 

SWOT Analysis

A student Intern is expected to study the economic environment in which the company is

operating, understand its progress in the past and based on the same, analyze the

strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to the company. The SWOT analysis 

should provide insights into the compan y’s future prospects and the strategic directions.

Who’s Who

The student intern should know and prepare a report on (i) the immediate operations team

including the company guide and supervisors, (ii) departmental heads at the IP Company 

and (iii) the Chief Executive Officer/the Managing Director and the other top

management team members of the company.

Business Objectives

The intern should clearly do cument the specific goals for Executive Training and the

targets for the IP period. The report shall further provide break-up of the targets on a

weekly basis.

INTERIM EVALUATION

The student may refer to the following guidelines for writing the Interim Report.

Report:

1. Objective:

State the objectives of the Executive Training ex plaining clearly the specif ic tasks set by

the IP Company in consultation with Faculty Guide. 

2. Target/Tasks:

The target/tasks of the training should be stated, and also be clearly measurable. The 

specific dates as to when these targets/tasks would be completed/achieved should also be

mentioned.

3. Strategy:

An outline of how the student is undergoing the Executive Training in terms of various

activities and plans employed (or design ed) to achieve the set targets should be specified.

4. Achievements:

The achievements vis-à-vis the tar gets and tasks of the job assigned should be clearly

mentioned.

5. Mid-course Correction:

It is a review of the targets/tasks assigned by the organization and any upward or 

downward revision thereof. The reason for th e revision may be detailed.6. Limitation:

The constraints in achieving the tar gets/task objectives should be highlighted in this

section. The student should outline any specific problems or hurdle encountered. They

should explain any significant obstacle that they might have encountered, if it calls for a

change in plan. They should also outline the changed plan.

7. Conclusion:

The student should dr aw together the main issues discussed in the main sections and

identify an y implications of the work that he/she has described. The student should also

describe how tasks and targets could have been better achieved, or the performance b e

improved upon.

A presentation on the pr ogress achieved till date should be made by the Student Intern to

an audience consisting of the Company Guide and the Faculty Guide. The objective is to 

  provide an opportunity to get insights into the performance and consider them before

finalization of the report. This would also help the Student Interns to involve themselves

actively in the operational review and make it more meaningful to the host company. The

Faculty Guide should provide necessary suppor t and inputs to the Student Intern in

making these presentations effective. Presentation at the Interim Evaluation would be of 

15-30 minutes duration. It carries 15% weightage in the aggregate. Normally, such

  presentation should take place at the company where the student is undergoing his/her 

internship. However, if for an y reason, this does not take place at the company, the

Faculty Guide should facilitate the presentation at the IP C ampus.

FINAL EVALUATION

Report

Successful Executive Training shall enhan ce placement opportunity for a Student Intern. 

It is therefore essential that the student is result-oriented and makes value addition to the

IP Company. In the final evaluation, the Student Intern should prepare a report on his/her 

Executive Training covering the following asp ects:

a. Target/Task set

 b. Strategy adopted

c. Analysis of performance vs. Target. Reasons for variance, if any

d. Problems/Constraints/Limitations

e. Learning in the Executive Training

f. Awards/rewards received during Executive Training including earnings

Presentation:

The presentation on Executive Trainin g by the intern is an important component of the

IP. Both the Student Intern and the Faculty Guide must work to make this final

  presentation take place at the company itself. The presentation made b y the Student

Intern to the Senior Executives of the company should be impressive. The evaluation 

  panel shall consist of the Faculty Guid e, the Company Guide and the Internship

Coordinator. All the panel members shall evaluate the intern on an equal weightage basis.

The presentations should be completed during the last week of Internship Program.

Advance plannin g would help the presence of key comp any executives required for 

implementation of recommendations made in the presentation. The Faculty Guide should

  play a very proactive role in impressing upon the Senior Ex ecutives to facilitate and

  participate in this presentation. Presentation should be planned for about 30-45 minutes.

It carries a weightage of 20% in the final evaluation. Normally, such presentation should

take place at the company where the student is undergoing his/her internship. The 

services of a Faculty Member of the relevant function may be obtained to be a member of 

 panel.

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION

IP C ampus has to organize a valedictory function before the close of the IP at the

campus. All the Company Guides may be invited to this function. The Student Interns

may be encouraged to participate in cultural activities.

IP COMPLETION

On successful completion of the 12-week IP Program, the student must collect a relieving

letter and a no dues certificate from the host organization and the IP Campus, and both

the documents should be submitted to the head of the institution.

IMPORTANT TIPS

Apart from giving the Student Interns an ex posure to real work situations, the IP pro vides

them a meaningful opportunity to learn th e art and skills of information/data

identification, collection, classification, acquisition, processing and presentation. The

Executive Training under IP could be of significance to the host organization – in terms

of their objective of technical documentation aiming at updating or modernization of 

information systems. The Student Interns, therefor e, should take care to properly

document their work. They should consult their Faculty Guide for any problems they

might encounter.

The Student Interns are advised to strictly adhere to the deadlines of submitting reports

and making presentations. Non-submission of reports by the due date may lead to the

student not being evaluated. The Student Intern s are advised to submit the Executive

Training report to the h ost organization for scru tiny before submitting it to the Faculty

Guide. This gives an assurance to the host organization on maintaining the confidentiality

of certain data.

REGISTRATION:

The entire student Interns participating in IP should register themselves at the Campus.

Delayed registrations are not permitted. Exceptions, if any, will be subject to approval by

the Dean, for which a written request should be submitted. Dean shall accept such late

registrations only if it is a genuine case. Late registration is not a matter of right, and

such a provision is made only to take care of exceptional and genuine cases.

Students should fill the “Student Registration F orm” and submit it to the Dean.
