I was reading over the article put together by Nathan Charnes and it is hard to imagine that the season is half way over! I welcomed my fourth child into the world on June 16 (Dylan Brennan Riley) so between the lack of sleep and a busy on and off the course
schedule… time really flies. I try my hardest to appreciate each day while looking at all that lies ahead – so with that, I would like to share a quick moment of appreciation while looking at the next few months.
The Gateway PGA REACH Pro-Am and Dinner at the Country Club of St. Albans was a tremendous success do in large part to the committee we had in place. For those of you who have not met Mel and Sue Rector – please take the time to do so! The Rector’s co-chaired our 5th Annual Pro-Am and really inspired a lot of new faces to get involved. This year we even had the spouses of three of our PGA Professionals (Julianne Fogt, Eva Charnes, Charla Finn). The time put in by Mel and Sue manifested itself in record turnouts for dinner, increased sponsors/teams, and incredible auction items. All of this and more added up to a wonderful night that generated a lot of money…please take the time to view the recap and pictures on page 3. Along those lines, I would also like to thank our PGA Professionals who brought a team, publicized the event, came to the dinner, and/or help our Foundation throughout the year. Without you, this would not be possible. Looking ahead we are entering Championship Season. The PNC and Sr PNC will be conducted in August and followed by the National Car Rental Assistants Championship in early September. Our tournament program has been bolstered by larger purses, value added Pro-Am Series, point meaning brought back in the form of the Players Championship, and the TNT Yamaha Par-3 Shootout. I really look forward to seeing this all play out over the next several months. Last but not least, please keep an eye out for information on the 2014 Gateway PGA Awards Program and Dinner. Information will be presented to the members in the coming weeks. We will also be sending out information on the Fall Membership Meeting which will have an election for the Secretary position. Thank you for your continued commitment to elevating golf in the Gateway PGA. I hope to see you soon,

FROM THE OFFICERS DESK
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through July; where does the time go? Before we
know it, Labor Day will be here and the end of the season in sight. I hope that everyone is
enjoying the golf season and the cooler than normal temperatures.
I was very proud to be a PGA Member and member of the Gateway PGA Section a couple
weeks ago during the PGA Reach Pro-Am at the Country Club of St Albans. The event was
an overwhelming success from the dinner, auction, fireside chat with Ozzie Smith and Julius
Erving (Dr. J), and the golf tournament the following day. Josh and the team were hoping for
20 teams on each course and they basically reached that goal with 18 on one course and 21 on
the other. All in, nearly $150,000 was raised for the Gateway PGA Foundation and PGA Reach. I want to
personally thank Josh and his staff, the event committee that included many volunteers and PGA wives, as well as
the Country Club of St Albans and their staff!
Golf Professionals are starting to talk about the TNT Pro Shootout as we get closer to October 13. If you aren’t
aware, the TNT Shootout is a yearlong closest to the pin competition presented by TNT Yamaha. There is a chance
to qualify at every section sanctioned event, and shootout will take place at the player’s championship at Bellerive
on October 13. Details are not yet published about the finale, but 1 Gateway PGA Professional will go home with a
TNT Golf Car courtesy of TNT. Good luck to the Pro’s and thank you to TNT!
The National Car Rental Pro-Am series is going very well. There are still 2 pro-am chances left in the season to
qualify for the National Car Rental Pro-Am Championship at Algonquin Country Club on September 25. Events
that still remain are the Scratch Pro-Am at LockHaven on Thursday, July 17 and the Section Pro-Am at The Club at
Old Hawthorne on Monday, August 4th.
Lastly, the fall meeting is tentatively scheduled for December 8th, with the 2014 Awards Dinner on December 7th.
Please remember this is an election year. If you plan to run for the position of Secretary, you must submit a letter to
myself 30 days prior to the membership meeting.
Hope you have a good last ½ of the season!

The 5th Annual Gateway PGA REACH Foundation Event was an amazing success.
The annual tradition of inviting in a sports legend was taken to the next step by
President, Ozzie Smith. Not only did the Gateway PGA REACH Foundation
welcome avid golfer and NBA Legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving, but the night was also
emcee’d by world renowned comedian, Joe Piscopo. 250 guests were treated to a
fabulous dinner and auction orchestrated by a committee headed by Mel & Sue
Rector. Joe Schwent, PGA and the staff at Country Club of St. Albans did a
remarkable job and truly showed the class, professionalism, and dedication that can
exist inside a PGA facility. When the final award was given out after a hot Monday
of golf, nearly $150,000 was raised for the Foundation and our effort to Improve
Lives Through Golf. Thank you to all who participated in this event and our PGA
Professionals who continue to carry the flag for growing the game while helping individuals in our community who
need it the most.

GROWTH OF THE GAME
I f you attended the annual PGA REACH Pro Am and Dinner event at the Country Club
of St. Albans in June, you already know how AMAZING those two days were. If you
happened to miss it then I’m sad to say you missed an incredible evening of
entertainment by Joe Piscopo and Julius “Dr. J” Erving! So many people helped to
make this year’s Foundation fundraiser our largest yet: our Gateway Professionals and their
guests, a committee of passionate and dedicated volunteers, and staff. Thank you to all!
The College Combine is only a few days away and our team is putting the finishing touches on an event that will
welcome about 40 of the area’s top junior golfers and several college coaches from across the Midwest. We can
still use PGA Professionals to help administer the event so if you’d like to join us on Monday, July 21st at the
Country Club of St. Albans, let me know.
Have you read your copy of this month’s PGA Magazine, yet? You may notice a full page story (with picture!)
about this year’s GPGA Women’s Golf Day. Props to Barbara Blanchar, Missy Brennan, Jill Bertram, and Nash
Haxel for putting together an event worthy of national recognition!
Four Drive, Chip, and Putt Qualifiers down, one more to go! Seeing the skills that many of these young golfers
have being put to the test is so much fun. Our future club members and core golfers are getting a good start on
the game through opportunities like this. What’s more, these qualifiers would not be possible without the help of
the dozens of volunteers we’ve worked with so far and the participation of our members. Thank you to Jeff
Schmid at Perche Creek, Mike Suhre at Oak Brook, Shawn Barnes at Gateway National, and Jeff Mullican at
Pheasant Run. We will wrap up this summer’s qualifiers at Old Hickory at the end of the month then meet the
junior qualifiers at WingHaven Country Club on August 4th for the sub-regional.
Lastly, as I write this month’s article, I find myself on a plane headed to Palm Beach Gardens for a series of
regional player development meetings and seminars. I can’t help but get excited over all the positive movement
for our members, our Section, and our consumers through the creation of a national long term player development
plan. More to come soon!

contact Gavin or me with any questions.
We’ll see you on the tee!

We are approaching the end of the Summer Series of events and our juniors
have seen A LOT of golf. We’ve played in the rain, we’ve played in the hot
sun, we’ve learned about many different rules of golf, we’ve played ahead of
pace, we’ve played behind pace, we’ve seen our first playoff performance…
and we’ve had FUN! But we’re not done yet.
The 9 Hole Championship will take place at Ballwin Golf Course in Ballwin, MO
on August 6 & 7. Juniors who qualify throughout the summer will receive an
invitation to participate. Keep an eye on your inbox and come prepared for
some competition.
Gateway PGA College Combine -

W hat a great end to June and start to July. We have seen some really awesome scores,
and super competitive golf. All the Gateway PGA professionals that coach and teach all
of the juniors that play in the Gateway PGA Jr Tour should be commended for how
well the juniors are playing.
It’s hard to believe we only have a few weeks left in the summer season. One contest that showed off
the talent on the Gateway Jr Tour was The PGA Jr Qualifier at The Quarry at Crystal Spring. We were
treated to some great golf and in the end we sent 2 fine players off to Miramont CC in Bryan, Texas to
compete in the 2014 PGA Jr Championship. Matt Echelmeir took it under par with a -1 (139) and
Amanda Kim with a +3 (143), great playing and can’t wait to see how you do in Texas.
All of our divisions seem to be growing in participation and skill. We have had several rounds under-
par, and we keep seeing improvement from each and every one of you every time you play.
We want to remind you that your Juniors that have qualified will have division championships coming
up at Winghaven Country Club. To be eligible to participate, they must finish in the top-3 in an event,
or finish top 10 in points for the season. If they have yet to place, we have a few more events on the
horizon. We will be sending out invitations very soon.
I am in the process of finalizing the Fall schedule. If I have not reached out to you but you would like
to hold a Gateway PGA Junior event on a Sunday in the fall please contact me at:
Make sure to follow us on Twitter and look up our page on Facebook for all of the latest information,
photos and news.
Thank you to all that have hosted the Tour already and have a great rest of the summer.

We are approaching the last month to collect donations for PGA Golf Day Marathon. So far five
Gateway Professionals have raised $17,500, if we can get everyone else on board we should be able to
raise more than we have in the past two years. We need your support, so please take the time to start
fundraising for PGA Golf Day. We are supporting some great charities in the St Louis and extended
area including the Lake of the Ozarks and Southern IL.
Just a few reminders, to be eligible for the all-expense paid Punta Cana trip donations must be entered
by Aug 15th at 11:59pm. Also, many companies offer a donation matching program for their
employees; this is a great way to get extra funds for your leaderboard. So far we have collected almost
$1,000 in matching donations from companies. Remind your donors
about this great opportunity to take advantage of their benefits.
If you have any questions about PGA Golf Day please log into
pgagolfday.com or contact Lindsay Riley at [email protected].
Gateway Professionals: Team Persimmon, Nathan Charnes, Gideon
Traub, John DePriest, Paul Leahy, and Kevin Corn are paving the way
for this year’s fundraising efforts. Let’s join forces and make 2014
PGA Golf Day another incredible success we can be proud to be a part
of.

One of the ways PGA Professionals can bring extra value to employers is teaching the Rules of Golf as a part of a
junior program. The value of rules knowledge was certainly demonstrated at a PGA Junior
Series event at The Links at Kokopelli.
One player was penalized two strokes for making a stroke from the wrong place. The situation
involved a ball unplayable. The player dropped the ball on the line of flight rather than one of
the three places prescribed in Rule 28 Ball Unplayable. Many players confuse line of flight
with keeping the point where the ball was unplayable or entered a hazard between where the
ball is dropped and the hole. Try to get your juniors to eliminate "line of flight" from their
rules vocabulary.
A provisional ball can also cause problems. One player hit a ball into a wooded area. He
then announced and played a provisional ball. A parent found the original ball. As the player went to the ball the
parent made the comment "your ball is not in a very good position but you can decide if you want to play it or the
provisional". WRONG. Fortunately I was there and told the player that since he had found his ball he must abandon
the provisional ball. Once the original was found if he made a stroke at the provisional ball it would be a stroke at a
wrong ball. His options were to play the ball as it lies or declare it unplayable. If he chose the stroke and distance
option he would have to go back to the tee and play again from the teeing ground with a stroke penalty. The provi-
sional could not be used for this option. Remember Rule 27 tells us that if the original ball is not lost, not out of
bounds or it is known or virtually certain the ball is in a water hazard the provisional ball MUST BE ABAN-
DONED.

the City and County of San Francisco. The announcement
builds upon a strengthening relationship between the PGA

of two of the game's leading organizations: PGA of
America President Ted Bishop and PGA TOUR
Commissioner Tim Finchem. The partnership also
includes a continued commitment to The First Tee of San
Francisco, which is located at TPC Harding Park, by both
the PGA TOUR and the PGA of America.
"TPC Harding Park is a world-class facility and San
Francisco is a mecca of the best sports, cultural and
entertainment events the world has to offer, so today's
exciting announcement only serves to further the City's
stature in that respect, and is a wonderful extension of our
long-standing partnership with the PGA TOUR," said
Lee. "San Franciscans should be thrilled – and proud – to
know they will be hosting both a major championship in
the PGA Championship, a preeminent, international team
event in The Presidents Cup and – in only 10-months'
time – a World Golf Championships event with a thrilling
match-play format. Our city will shine in all respects, I

Employment “Chips”
Employment Chips! – Please enjoy this
“Gateway Employment Chips” section of
your email newsletter. Every month I will
be adding to the subjects of these “brief”
articles and hoping to inspire your thought
process regarding your employment and/or
your facility. Please use and expand on the
information to make your employment
more successful!
Moving to the “Top of the Class in the PGA”!
Have you thought of what it would take to get you to the
“top of the class in the PGA”? If you are an apprentice,
aspiring to become a PGA member or a member of 25
years, what do you need to do to become the best PGA
Professional inside and outside of the PGA of America?
Aspiring to greatness within the Association can mean
many things to many different people. Below are a few
points to consider including in your experience of either
becoming a PGA member or elevating yourself within
the organization as a member:
Participate! – Participating in section events,
tournaments and programming should be number one
on your list of ways to elevate yourself with your
organization. Participating leads to networking,
learning, creating the greater good and fellowship.
Our Association has always been a fraternal one and
is based on this type of participation. Not only will it
help you in your career, but is also a source of great
fun!
Become PGA Certified and ultimately a Master
Professional – This is not an easy task, nor is it de-
signed to be, but if you want to differentiate yourself
from others in your profession this is one great way
to do it. The process has been streamlined and made
as cost effective as possible. What better way to
market yourself to your employer or a potential
employer. Elevating your status through education
can reap many benefits!
Volunteer for a section committee or run for office –
As a member of the Association I always felt the
need to “give back” to the organization and to help
our PGA members. Volunteering and serving has
created some of the most meaningful experiences in
my career and it will do the same for you! This is a
great way to move yourself to the “top of the class”.
Be a mentor! – As a PGA member and manager at
your facility, do everything you can to be a mentor to
other PGA members or apprentices. Our Association
was built on this fundamental, and while some will
say this is a “lost art” in our profession, there are
many great mentors in our fold. Mentor and you will
inspire greatness in those you work and associate
with!
I hope that you are having a great summer and please do
not hesitate to contact me should you need any assistance
at all.

We have passed the Fourth of July and now summer roles down the hill in St. Louis. Still plenty of
time for golf in the warm weather. Speaking of weather, last summer I spoke about a warm weather
activity which could keep us motivated and fit as we continue
enjoying our golf game. Last summer I researched and read about it
and this summer have tried it. Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) is an
activity that can refresh our fitness routines with something fun and
interesting – in the interest of staying fit and keeping our golf game
strong. In other words, let’s try something new to keep motivated.
Stand Up Paddleboaarding was created when Waikiki surfers stood
on boards and navigated their way through the waves with a long
paddle.
SUP is becoming increasingly popular in the Midwest. Have you
ever tried paddle boarding in a local lake? Paddle boarding is wonderful exercise because it builds
focus, core strength and balance. It
offers an opportunity to build strength and muscle tone in the legs. The activity offers potential for a
full body workout, as well. As you know, focus, strength, balance and a workout are important and
good for golf.
Last year the summer got away from me and I didn’t get to SUP. This year I got in on a class and
leaned the basics of SUP. I met the founder of SUP St. Louis, Shane Perrin.
I attended the class and then went back to to be a part of SUPY
(Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga). What a great way to increase
balance, flexibility and strength for my golf game.
I can always use new ways to build my core. A strong core really
improves my golf game.
Paddleboarders stand on a board in the water that is typically 10 to
12 feet long, and use a long paddle to move through the water at
their own pace—all the time using the core of their body. In addition
to core strengthening, paddleboarding builds balance and focus, two techniques which are required—
otherwise the board tips over!
About the same time I learned about SUP from friend last year, I ran across an article in June 2013
Yoga Journal magazine that talked about doing yoga on a paddleboard. Yoga, too, involves strength,
focus and balance. Add a paddleboard and voila! You’ve automatically added more challenge. Yoga is
great for improving your golf game and overall fitness.
Bottom line: Look for more interesting ways to increase your fitness. Don’t let the end-of-summer
blues stall your fitness plans. Paddleboarding is just one option; make it a point to discover some new,
fun and challenging way to stay fit. In the meantime, if you want to change up your fitness routine, or
learn more about SUP, Optimal Lifestyles can help. We offer yoga classes and a variety of group
fitness classes in several locations. Contact Barb at 314-984-0592 for more details.
