Frequently Asked QuestionsHow do I start my pressure washer?1. Make sure you have gas and oil in the engine. The engine does not come with oil.2. Turn the water on, then squeeze the trigger on the gun to make sure the water will flow smoothly out of the tip.3. Put the engine throttle control fully to the left, in the “Fast/Start” position. Set the shut off switch to “ON.”4. Set the choke fully to the left. Set the fuel valve lever fully to the right in the “ON” position.5. Pull the trigger (to relieve any back pressure in the pump) while pulling the starter cord.

What type of oil do I use?Engine: The engine DOES NOT COME FILLED WITH OIL. See Page 10 for engine oil types and quantities.

Pump: The pump comes filled with the correct amount of oil and should not need changing or filling. Refer to Pages 9 and 10 of this manual for oil changing instructions, oil types and quantities.

Why don’t I have any water pressure?• Is the water hose attached to the pressure washer?

• Is the water turned on?

• Check for any kinks, leaks, or blockage in the hoses, fittings, or the nozzle.

• Is the quick connect tip in place? (See Page 5 and 6).

• Is the inlet filter screen free of debris? Check and remove debris if needed.

How do I get high pressure?• Use any color tip except black. The black tip is only used for low pressure detergent application.

How do I get the soap suction to work?1. Connect the clear plastic chemical suction tube to the plastic hose barb on pump, insert the other end into your detergent.

2. Install the black spray tip to apply low pressure detergent.

Why doesn’t the pressure washer apply detergents with high pressure?Detergents “bounce” off cleaning surfaces as fast as they are applied. The pressure washer’s features allow for a detergent to bedrawn while in low pressure mode only. By applying detergent at low pressure, the effect of “bouncing” is reduced. Also, detergentsare only effective when time is allowed for them to work on the surface of whatever is being cleaned. After applying the detergent,wait 1-3 minutes while it works, and then proceed to rinse the surface with high pressure.

What maintenance do I need to perform on my pressure washer?1. After turning off the pressure washer and the water, depressurize the hose by triggering the gun.

2. Remove the garden hose and high pressure hose from the pump.

3. Pull the start rope slowly five times to purge water from the pump. This will help protect the pump from damage.

4. Do not store your pressure washer in an area where the temperature will drop below 32˚ F.

5. Follow proper storage and winterizing instructions found on pages 8 and 9.

• Do not remove fuel tank cap or fillfuel tank while engine is hot orrunning (allow engine to cool twominutes before refueling). Alwaysfill the tank slowly.

• Never disconnect the high pressuredischarge hose from the machinewhile the system is pressurized. Todepressurize machine, turn powerand water supply off, then press thegun trigger 2-3 times.

• Never permanently engage thetrigger mechanism on the gun.

• Never operate the machine withoutall components properly connectedto the machine (handle, gun/wandassembly, nozzle, etc.).

Equipmentdamage.

• ALWAYS turn water supply “ON”before turning pressure washer“ON.” Running pump dry causesserious damage.

• Do not operate the pressure washerwith the inlet water screenremoved. Keep screen clear of debrisand sediment.

• NEVER operate pressure washerwith broken or missing parts. Checkequipment regularly and repair orreplace worn or damaged partsimmediately.

• Use only the nozzle supplied withthis machine.

• Never leave the wand unattendedwhile the machine is running.

• Never tamper with the enginegovernor or attempt to alter factorysettings. Altering factory settingscould damage the unit and will voidthe warranty.

• Always hold gun and wand firmlywhen starting and operating themachine.

• NEVER allow the unit to run withthe trigger released (off) for morethan one minute. Resulting heatbuildup will damage the pump.

• NEVER store the pressure washeroutdoors or where it could freeze.Freezing temperatures can seriouslydamage the pump.

Pre-OperationKeep hoseaway from

sharp objects. Bursting hoses maycause injury. Examine hoses regularlyand replace if damaged. Do notattempt to mend a damaged hose.

UNPACKINGRemove the equipment and all partsfrom the carton. The carton shouldcontain the following. • One pressure washer (pump,

engine, cart base)• One cart handle assembly• One spray gun and quick connect

lance• Five spray tips• One high pressure hose• One pack of nuts, bolts, and

manuals• One bottle of engine oilIf any parts are missing, DO NOTRETURN THE UNIT TO THE RETAILER.Know the unit’s model number(located on the serial number tag onthe pressure washer frame) and call 1-888-MAXUS4U for replacement parts.

After unpacking the product, inspect itcarefully for any damage that mayhave occurred during transit. Makesure to tighten fittings and boltsbefore using the pressure washer.

Do notoperate

the unit if it’s damaged duringshipping, handling, or use. Damagecould result in bursting and causeinjury or property damage.

ASSEMBLYUse 1/2 in. wrench to assemble thepressure washer.

1. Slide the handle assembly over thelower legs of the cart base. Use the(supplied) standard nuts and boltsto secure the handle to the legs(See Figure 1).

2. Slide clear plastic detergent hoseonto brass hose barb (See Figure 2).

3. Insert quick connect spray tips intorubber holders on front of the placard.(See Figure 3).

4. Secure garden hose (not included) tothe inlet connection on pump (SeeFigure 4).

5. Connect the high pressure hose to thepump outlet (See Figures 4 and 5).

6. Attach the lance to the gun (See Figure 6).

7. Install quick connect tip (See Figure 7).

OperationNever runthe unit

dry. Be sure the water supply iscompletely turned on before operatingthe unit.

5. Trigger the gun until water spraysfrom the tip indicating that all air ispurged from the system. Set thetrigger safety latch.

6. Open the fuel shutoff valve byturning the lever to the right/“ON”position. Close the choke (if theengine is cold) by moving the chokelever fully to the left. Move thethrottle fully to the left to the “Run”or “Rabbit” position. Turn theON/OFF swirch to the “ON” position.

1. Check engine oil levels. Add oil asnecessary.

2. Check fuel level. Add unleadedgasoline (rated 86 octane or higher) asrequired.

DO NOTrefuel a

hot engine. Refueling a hot enginecould cause a fire. Use only fresh, cleanregular or unleaded gasoline. Close thefuel shutoff valve during refueling.

3. Attach a garden hose to the inlet sideof the pump and connect it to thewater supply. Use a hose with aninternal diameter (I.D.) of 5/8 in. (1.58cm) and a length of 50 ft. (15 m) or less.

Some localplumbing

codes require backflow preventionwhen connecting to a fresh watersupply. Install a backflow preventerupstream from the pump if necessary.

a. If inlet water pressure is over 100psi, install a regulating water valveat the garden hose connection.

b. Do not exceed 100˚ F (38˚ C) inletwater temperature.

NOTE: The inlet water supply must have aminimum flow rate of 5 gpm (19 lpm).

4. Turn the water supply ON.

The following cleaning procedure willhelp you organize your cleaning taskand ensures that you will achieve thebest results in the shortest amount oftime. Remember to use the spraying /cleaning techniques mentioned in thefollowing section.

Before starting a pressure washercleaning job, prepare the surface youintend to clean. Clear furniture fromthe area and make sure that allwindows and doors are closed tightly.Also, protect all plants and trees nearthe cleaning area with a drop cloth. Acovering ensures that your plants won’tbe sprayed by the detergents.

ALWAYS use this start up procedure toensure that the unit is started safely andproperly.

If waterhas frozen

in the pressure washer, thaw thepressure washer in a warm room beforestarting. DO NOT pour hot water on orinto the pump; internal parts will bedamaged.

TRIGGER SAFETY LATCH

In the engaged position, the triggersafety latch prevents the gun from beingtriggered accidentally. Push the latch fully

up to engage it (See Figure 8 and 9).

Always engage the trigger safety latchwhen the unit is not in use.

7. Start the engine: Unlock the triggersafety latch on the gun. Grasp thestarter rope and brace one foot on thechassis. While squeezing the trigger onthe gun, pull the starter rope rapidlyand firmly. Continue holding the ropeas it returns. Repeat these steps untilthe engine starts.

When pullingthe starter

rope, make sure to keep your hand andarm clear of the engine and cartcomponents.

Never letthe starter

rope return by itself. Doing so could jamthe recoil system.

8. If the engine does not start after twoor three pulls or if the rope is hard topull, squeeze the gun trigger torelease the pressure that has built upin the high pressure hose. RepeatSteps 7 and 8 until the engine starts.

Spray the cleaning surface with water toclear off any dirt or grime that may havecollected on the surface. Doing so allowsthe detergent to attack the deep downdirt that has worked its way into thecleaning surface. After the engine starts, trigger the gun 3to 5 times to get any trapped air out ofthe system. After the spray becomesconstant, you may need to adjust thepressure.

PRESSURE ADJUSTMENT

Please refer to your CAT pump manualfor specific pressure adjustment details.

ADJUSTING THE SPRAY FAN ANGLEFive quick connect tips are includedwith this pressure washer. The tipshave a range of spray fan angles,ranging from 0°, narrow high impact,to a 65° wide fan spray.

Pressure can also be adjusted bymoving closer or further away from thecleaning surface and by adjusting thespray fan angle as shown.

ANGLE TO THE CLEANING SURFACE

When spraying water against a surface,you can generate maximum impact bystriking the surface head on. However,this type of impact can cause dirtparticles to embed in the surface andcan prevent the desired cleaning action.

The optimum angle for spraying wateragainst a cleaning surface is 45 degrees.

Spray water against a surface at a 45degree angle to achieve the mostbeneficial impact force and to efficientlyremove debris.

DISTANCE FROM CLEANING SURFACE The distance between the spray tip andthe cleaning surface is another factor thataffects the impact force of the water. Theimpact force of the water increases as thetip is moved closer to the surface.

HOW TO AVOID DAMAGING SURFACESDamage to cleaning surfaces occursbecause the impact force of the waterexceeds the durability of the surface.You can vary the impact force bycontrolling the spray tip angle to thecleaning surface and the distance fromthe cleaning surface and by changingthe spray tip. NEVER use a narrow highimpact stream on a surface that issusceptible to damage. Avoid sprayingwindows with a narrow high impactstream. Doing so may break the window.The most sure way to avoid damagingsurfaces is to follow these steps:

1. Before triggering the gun, makesure the quick connect tip you areusing is appropriate for theapplication.

2. Place the spray tip approximately 4-5 feet (1,22-1,52 m) away from thecleaning surface. Then hold thelance and spray tip at a 45 degreeangle to the cleaning surface.Trigger the gun.

3. Vary the fan pattern spray angleand the distance to the cleaningsurface until optimum cleaningefficiency is achieved withoutdamaging the surface.

DETERGENTS

The use of detergents can dramaticallyreduce cleaning time and assist in theremoval of difficult stains. Manydetergents are customized for pressurewasher use on specific cleaning tasks.Pressure washer detergents are as thickas water. Using thicker detergents –like dish soap – will clog the chemicalinjection system and prevent theapplication of the detergent.

Once applied to a cleaning surface,detergents take time to break down dirtand grime. Detergents work best whenapplied at low pressure.

You can effectively clean surfaces bycombining the chemical action ofdetergents with high pressure rinses. Onvertical surfaces, apply the detergentstarting at the bottom and work yourway upward. This method prevents thedetergent from sliding down and causingstreaks. Begin high pressure rinsing at thebottom and work your way upward. Onparticularly tough stains, use a brush incombination with detergents and highpressure rinsing.

1. Follow manufacturer’s labeldirections for mixing correctconcentrations of soap/detergents.The soap detergent to water rationthrough the pump is approximately10% (1 to 10).

2. Insert the filter end of the clearplastic detergent tube into thedetergent container.

3. Use the BLACK 65° quick connectspray tip.

4. Adjust the detergent injection flowby turning the collar of the injector.Turning collar clockwise increasesdetergent flow.

GENERAL CLEANING TIPS

1. Apply the detergent so that itthoroughly covers the cleaningsurface. Apply the detergent frombottom to top to prevent thedetergent from sliding down andstreaking. Wait a couple of minutesfor the detergent to break down

the dirt and grime. Use a brush tolightly scrub heavily soiled areas.NEVER allow the detergent to dry onthe cleaning surface.

2. To rinse: replace black 65° spray tipwith another color tip.

Neverreplace

quick connect tip when gun is triggered.Always engage trigger lock on gun beforeremoving or installing quick connect tips.

3. After using detergents, flush thesuction system by placing thedetergent suction tube into a bucketof clean water and spraying with theblack spray tip.

The easiest way to regulate thecleaning power of your pressure washeris by changing the distance from thesurface you are cleaning. Begin sprayingwith a wide fan pattern while standingseveral feet from the surface. Slowlymove closer to the object you arecleaning, adjusting the spray pattern asnecessary, until you find the mosteffective cleaning technique.

NOTE: The unit also has a pressureadjustment knob on the pump that canadjust the pressure.

The final rinse should start at the bottomand work upward. Make sure that youthoroughly rinse the surface and that youremove all detergent.

To reduce the risk of bodily injury orproperty damage, always follow thisprocedure whenever spraying isstopped, when work is completed, andbefore checking or repairing any partof the system.

1. Engage the trigger safety latch.

2. Turn the unit off.

3. Shut off the water supply.

4. Disengage the trigger safety latch andtrigger the gun to relieve pressure.

5. Re-engage the trigger safety latch.

6. When checking or repairing unit,remove the ignition cable from thespark plug.

storage, or transporting unit,disconnect the water supply and turnoff the fuel supply valve.

1. Be sure all detergent is flushed fromsystem.

2. Turn the engine OFF.

3 Turn the water supply OFF.

4. After the engine and water supplyare turned off, trigger the gun todepressurize the system.

NEVER turnthe water

supply off before turning theengine/motor off. Serious damage couldoccur to the pump and/or engine/motor.

NEVERdisconnect

the high pressure discharge hose from themachine while the system is pressurized.To depressurize, turn engine/motor off,turn water supply off and squeeze guntrigger 2-3 times.

5. After each use, wipe all surfaces ofthe pressure washer with a clean,damp cloth.

• Do not store the pressure washeroutdoors.

• Do not store the pressure washerwhere it might freeze unless it hasbeen properly winterized.

LONG TERM STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS(MORE THAN 30 DAYS IN STORAGE)1. Remove fuel from the tank and run

the pressure washer in a normaloperating mode until the engine stopsfrom a lack of fuel. Normal operatingmode means actually spraying waterfrom the gun while the engine isrunning.

Alternate method – Add fuelstabilizer to gas in the tank and run innormal operating mode for at leastfive minutes.

2. Stop the engine, turn off the watersupply, and trigger the gun to releasepressure in the high-pressure hose.

3. Disconnect the water supply and highpressure hose from the pump.

4. Allow the engine to cool.

remove the spark plug.

6. Pour 1/2 oz. of engine oil into thespark plug hole.

Never pullthe starter

rope on the engine when the spark plug isremoved unless the spark plug hole iscovered. Fuel vapor from the hole canignite by a spark.

7. Place a rag over the spark plug holeand slowly pull the starter rope severaltimes to distribute the oil.

WINTERIZING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Follow and complete the Long Term

Storage Instructions above.

2. Disconnect the spark plug wire.

3. Disconnect the high pressure hosefrom the pump.

4. Insert a 12 in. to 14 in. piece ofgarden hose into the pump inlet.

5. Place a funnel in the other end of thegarden hose.

Read themanufacturer’s instructions for safehandling and disposal of RV antifreeze.

6. Pour approximately 6 oz. of RVantifreeze into the funnel.

7. Pull the starter rope several times untilthe RV antifreeze comes out of thepump outlet.

8. Disconnect the high pressure hosefrom the gun and drain the hose. Holdthe gun and lance in a vertical positionand squeeze the trigger to drain thewater out.

TIPS FOR EXTENDING THE LIFE OFYOUR PRESSURE WASHER

1. Never operate the unit without water.

2. Your pressure washer is not meant topump hot water. Never connect yourpressure washer to a hot water supplyas it will significantly reduce the life ofthe pump.

3. Running the unit for more than oneminute without spraying water causesheat to build up in the pump.Running the unit without sprayingwater can damage pump components.

Maintenance

Observe regular maintenance intervals toensure maximum performance and lifefrom the pressure washer. Refer to theschedule for recommended maintenance.If you operate the pressure washer industy conditions, perform maintenancechecks more often.

ENGINE OIL CHANGING INSTRUCTIONSBeforetipping the

engine or equipment to drain oil, drainfuel from the fuel tank.

NOTE: Change oil while the engine is cool.

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire fromthe spark plug.

2. Locate and remove the engine oildrain plug (See Figure 15).

3. Drain old oil.4. Replace the drain plug and set the

unit upright.5. Refill the unit with new oil of a

recommended type and quantity. Fillthe unit to the bottom edge of the oilfill neck.

Pump noisy / pump runsrough

4. Remove lance from gun. If detergent is dispensedthrough gun, the lance must be replaced. If nodetergent is dispensed through gun, remove 1”tapered detergent barb from pump. Clean thebarb, and make sure that ball and spring areproperly aligned with tapered portion of thespring facing the ball. The ball should be on topof the spring.

tion of the warranty period with the exceptions noted below. 6. WHAT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS WARRANTY:

A. Implied warranties, including those of merchantability and FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE ARE LIMITED FROM THEDATE OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE AS STATED IN THE DURATION. If this pressure washer is used for commercial, industrial orrental purposes, the warranty will apply for ninety (90) days from the date of purchase. Some States do not allow limita-tion on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitations may not apply to you.

B. ANY INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT, OR CONSEQUENTIAL LOSS, DAMAGE, OR EXPENSE THAT MAY RESULT FROM ANY DEFECT,FAILURE, OR MALFUNCTION OF THE CAMPBELL HAUSFELD PRESSURE WASHER. Some States do not allow the exclusion orlimitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.

C. Any failure that results from shipping damage, accident, purchaser’s abuse, neglect or failure to install and operate pres-sure washer in accordance with instructions provided in the owner’s manual(s) supplied with product.

D. Pre-delivery service, i.e. assembly, oil or lubricants and adjustment.E. Items or service normally required to maintain the pressure washer.F. Gasoline engine and components are expressly excluded from coverage under this limited warranty. Such components

should be returned by the purchaser to the original manufacturer or to its authorized repair stations for service.G. Additional items not covered under the warranty:

1. Normal wear items such as high pressure hoses, water and oil seals, o-rings, valves, lances and spray tips.2. Motor brushes (Electric models only).3. Cosmetic defects that do not interfere with functionality.4. Rusted components.5. Pump wear or valve damage caused by using improper oil, oil contamination or by failure to follow proper oil mainte-

nance guidelines.7. RESPONSIBILITIES OF WARRANTOR UNDER THIS WARRANTY: Repair or replace, at Warrantor’s option, pressure washer or

9. WHEN WARRANTOR WILL PERFORM REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT UNDER THIS WARRANTY: Repair or replacement will bescheduled and serviced according to the normal work flow at the servicing location, and depending on the availability ofreplacement parts.
