Comparison of hot and cold gas cleaning systems

26 hours of stable filtration were achieved. The performance of the filter candletoward tar and solid separation is a promising option for hot gas cleaning. Theoverall technical feasibility is not yet proven and the long term behaviour remains anoutstanding issue.

The overall scope of UNIfHY is the integration of plant components of provenperformance and reliability and well established processes (UNIQUE coupled

gasification and hot gas cleaning and conditioning system, Water-Gas Shift, WGS,system and Pressure Swing Adsorption, PSA, system) to obtain a continuous process

for pure hydrogen production from biomass.

1. UNIfHY uses hot gas conditioning systems including catalysts, sorbentsand ceramic filters and foams in order to remove tar, contaminants,particulates and increase the hydrogen production without coolingsteps, catalyst clogging, and loss of gas chemical and thermal energy,guaranteeing the system reliability.

2. The integration of catalytic filter candles in the freeboard reducesdramatically the investment and operation costs related to theequipment (the gas conditioning system cost becomes 30% as that of astandard free-standing conditioning system) as well as the complexity ofthe plant, guaranteeing the economic viability.

3. Reforming of both tar and methane is carried out directly in thefreeboard of the gasifier, reducing all costs due to a downstreamsecondary reformer.

4. The use of a ceramic foam with a wide catalytic surface areaimpregnated with Cu and Fe for Water Gas Shift eliminates the need tooperate at high pressure in order to have high conversion efficiency.

The scope of work will comprise development and scale up activities onmaterials and reactors design.

1. process feasibility demonstrated using CIRPS and ENEA laboratories;2. system feasibility demonstrated using a compact small scale (100 kWth)

fluidized bed indirectly heated gasifier;3. industrial feasibility demonstrated using a 1000 kWth fluidized bed

steam/oxygen gasifier.UNIfHY will provide, with respect to the traditional thermochemical

systems for hydrogen production (e.g. cold gas conditioning):1. investment cost savings estimated to be more than 50%,2. simplified plant layout with reduction of space and components up to

50% of those normally required (a relevant logistic, managerial andoperative benefit)

3. overall efficiency greater than 50% in comparison to standard systems(70% versus 45%).

The system is expected to produce hydrogen at a cost of 2-4 €/kg (about 17€/GJ, depending on the cost of the biomass.
