    Wrtsil gas-diesel technology is the solution or the powergenerating needs o the oil and gas industry. Thanks to theunique pilot uel injection method or initiating combustion,associated gas can be used or power generation at the oilfeld. And i the supply o gas varies in quantity and quality,the answer is uel sharing the Wrtsil innovation thatrevolutionizes the concept o uel exibility. What was onceconsidered an expense, is now an asset.

    Gas-diesel (GD) technology was introduced in 1987 with theWrtsil 32GD, the frst gas engine in the Wrtsil port olio. Thistechnology was mainly used in o shore applications, although italso ound applications in the power plant sector. GD technologymakes it possible to run a power plant on either associatedgas or crude oil, giving the operator uel versatility and securityagainst gas supply disturbances. The system accommodates

    variations in gas quality.Gas-diesels use the diesel combustion cycle in both gas andliquid uel operation, which gives them the characteristics o adiesel engine with uncompromised output and derating. In thegas mode, a small amount o pilot uel oil injection is used toinitiate combustion.

    WHEN THE GAS SUPPLY VARIES, GO FOR FUELFuel sharing enables the use o GDtechnology even when the gas supply is notconstant or the quality o the gas varies.Fuel sharing optimizes power production atthe oil feld in all situations.

    The uel sharing system allows the engineto run on gas and liquid uel in di erentproportions, in order to optimize plant operationaccording to the availability o the uels. Forexample, i with the gas available only 30% othe rated output can be achieved, the enginewill use uel oil or the remaining 70%. Theoperator can reely change the setpoint o the

    uel share, and the control system will ensure

    that the actual operating point is within thespecifed operating windows. O course, theoperator has the choice o running the enginein conventional GD or uel oil operation modeas well.

    FUEL OIL OPERATIONFuel oil operation is based on the use onormal uel oil injection pumps and the systemoperates just like any diesel engine. The engine

    can run on crude oil, light uel oil or heavy ueloil as the main and pilot injection uel, withoutany changes to the uel injection system. Fueloil operation is available within the ull loadrange rom zero to the rated load o the engine.

    GD OPERATIONGD is the original gas-diesel operation mode,where gas is the main source o energy,pilot uel oil injection o approximately 5% isused to ignite the combustion. GD operationis available at any point between 30%and 100% o rated load and the plant cantrans er to and rom GD operation within thissame range.

    FUEL SHARING OPERATIONThe uel sharing option is available between35% and 87.5% o rated load. The uel sharesetpoint can be adjusted on-line rom WOIS(Wrtsil Operators Inter ace System). Theoperator may, or example, want to run with35% gas at ull engine load, so he gives a35% setpoint and selects uel sharing mode.

    I at any time the engine load is too low

    to achieve the selected setpoint, the controlsystem will automatically adjust the setpointto the minimum or maximum limit. Theoperator may also change the setpoint at anytime during operation.

    Fuel sharing technology

    FUEL SHARING CONTROL SYSTEMThe uel sharing system is essentially acombination o the GD engine and a new

    control system and control principle. Thesystem controls both gas and oil injectionsimultaneously and allows both to be usedwithin the allowed operating window limits.The new control system is integrated intothe programmable logic control (PLC) o theWrtsil extended level automation systemusing the WOIS plat orm.

    Since the control system is now integratedinto the Wrtsil standard extendedlevel automation system, gas conversion

    applications or uture gas conversions are nowmuch more attractive than with the original GDsystem.

    The main advantages o the uel sharingsystem are:

    Flexible operation with variable proportionso gas and oil

    Flexibility in uel oils, or example LFO, HFOand crude oil can be used as main and pilot

    uel The system can operate on low methane

    number gas The system can use both low and high heat

    value gas

    CONVERSION OF EXISTING ENGINES

    I conditions at the feld change and it becomesmore economical to use gas as the main uel

    or feld energy production, Wrtsil Vasa32LN engines can be converted to gas-dieseloperation.

    PETROPRODUCTION SEQOYA In 2002 Wrtsil was contacted by Dygoil, an

    Ecuador-based company, with a specifcationthat called or true uel sharing capabilityor an oil feld power supply system. Dygoil

    needed a power plant that could run on bothassociated gas and crude oil because the gassupply was not stable and gas availability wasdeclining over time as the watercut increased.Wrtsil took up the challenge and developedthe uel sharing system or the 2 x Wrtsil16V32GD project. The plant was handed over

    or commercial operation in March 2004.

    VESSLEFRIKK Norwegian Statoil decided to convert two othe plat orms eight installed Wrtsil Vasa12V32 diesel gensets rom Marine DieselOil (MDO) to associated gas. The engineswere initially designed or easy conversion.In close cooperation with Statoil, the Wrtsilteam carried out the conversion as well as atotal upgrade to the latest technology. And a

    complete rebuilding o two other engines thathad been in operation or ten years. The entireproject was carried out in just three monthson board Vesle rikk plat orm in the North Sea,without disturbing oil production.
