The above-named Order made by the Council on 13.2.14, under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, and which became operational on 24.2.14 has been continued in force from 24.2.15, as approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, until 23.8.15, or until completion of the works, whichever is the sooner. The effect of the Order temporarily closes to all pedestrian traffic a 215 metre length of Footpath No. 38 Shildon Parish that extends northwards between its junctions with Footpath No. 81 (adjacent to Locomotion) and Bridleway No. 40 at East Thickley Cottages, Shildon in order that footpath re-grading works can be carried out. A recently established roller skating club which has attracted some Shildon talent is set to expand. The club has been rolling for under a year and in January held their very first show. Two local girls, who regu-larly give up their time to help coach roller skating, were stars of the show. The club, based in Willington, has grown in numbers since starting lessons, and will now make a new venture and start up coaching at Planet Leisure in Newton Aycliffe too. Sharday Smith and Nicola Stevens, both from Shildon, alongside Tracy Stevens help train
the young people, aged between 4 and 16. They recently showed off their own skills in a Disney inspired show, skating alongside their team. The large audience were wowed by the beauty of artistic roller skating. “Skating takes me to another world and helps me to forget everything else,” said Sharday, aged 15. “Roller skating may seem retro but it’s certainly not a thing of the past,” said coach Tracy Stevens, who learnt how to roller skate at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon.
Tracy continued, “We set the club up less than a year ago but already we have children ready to embark at competitive level.“The club is currently fundraising and aims to compete in July. We hope people of Shildon will support our talent and they can do this by signing up to easy fundraising.org.uk.“When people shop online the company will send a donation to our skating club. The money raised will cover costs of team transport and uniform as well as registration and competition fees.”

Johnathon Liddle of New Row, Eldon, was due at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently to face charges of burglary and theft, as well as charges of motoring offences. It is alleged that on 8th January Liddle entered a shed as a trespasser and stole 8 alloy wheels, 4 car batteries, a catalytic con-vertor, a pressure washer, 2 electric grinders and 6
steel wheels, valued at £655. On the same day it is alleged that the 22 year-old drove a white Citroen Xsara Picasso on Hackworth Industrial Park without a licence or insurance. A pre-hearing condition in the case means that Liddle is currently serving an electronically tagged curfew between the hours of 7pm and 7am.

On 27th January, a marked police vehicle on patrol in Church Street, Shildon, pulled over a Ford Transit Van after witnessing it travelling at speed. The van was being driven by a Mr. Hodgson and smelt of cannabis. The police officers began a search and it was at this point that the front seat passen-ger, Stephen Hindmarsh, produced a large lock knife from his pocket. At Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court, the 34 year-old, of Hillel Walk, Mid-dlesbrough, pleaded guilty to possession of a bladed article and was fined a
total of £215, including costs and victim support surcharge, as magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the blade. In his defence, Hindmarsh explained that the knife had belonged to his grand-father and that he had been using it earlier that day to cut some plastic pipe for a fish tank. He had put it in his pocket and for-gotten about it. The blade of the knife was broken and he tended to use it as a screwdriver and that the knife had been closed when he took it from his pocket and handed it to the police officer.

An 18 year-old has this week been charged with the burglary of a house on Byerley Road, on Sunday 8th February, during which a number of firearms and weapons were stolen.Ryan Lee Metcalfe, who lives just off Byerley Road, was also charged with a related matter of criminal damage. He appeared at South Durham Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody for two weeks. His next appearance will be before a Crown Court.Detective Sergeant Simon Cowan of Durham Con-
stabulary commented, “I would like to thank the Crier and the residents of Shildon who, through the publicity generated, have been a steady source of relevant information about the burglary.“I would appeal for this in-formation to keep coming, as although some of the weapons have now been recovered, a significant number remain outstand-ing and could be circulating the local community.”Anyone with information should contact D/Sgt 341 Cowan at Shildon CID on 101.

The Friends of the National Railway Museum (North East Branch) are holding a talk on Saturday 21st March. The talk, which starts at 10.30am, will take place in the McNay Room (Welcome Building, off Hackworth Close) at Lo-comotion: The National Railway Museum at
Shildon. The topic for the talk is ‘Steam in and around Dar-lington’ and the speaker is Chris Nettleton.Chris will explore local railway history with a presentation, including moving film and sound. The main topic will be the period 1958 to 1966 at Darlington Bank Top
A burglar got away with several items after he entered a house in Shildon at the weekend, on two separate occasions. The first offence was carried out around 6pm on Friday 20th February, when a witness saw a man acting suspiciously at the rear of a property in Spruce Court. The man had with him a wheelbarrow and was inside the back garden. The following day at 2pm the owner of the property discovered it had been broken into and also dis-covered the burglar had stolen the rear door key.The owner, who was in the
process of moving to a new address in Newton Aycliffe, decided to take all his re-maining valuables out of the house and to his new home. When he returned to Spruce Court 40 minutes later he went back upstairs to tidy up the mess caused by the intruder but, while upstairs, the burglar returned and opened the rear door using the key he had stolen. The owner, hearing sounds, ran down-stairs and followed the man as he fled from the property. After a short chase the thief is thought to have made his getaway in a VW
transporter van, parked at the entrance of Spruce Court. The stolen property included an orange Flymo lawnmower, five packs of dark wood effect laminate flooring, a silver necklace and a silver cross pendant. The suspect is described as white, in his late 20s to early 30s, clean shaven with short brown hair. He was wearing a black beanie hat, a light blue tracksuit top with a grey hooded top underneath and dark blue tracksuit bottoms.Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555111.
Station and North Road Works. Chris will also look at links in the surrounding areas north to Aycliffe and south to Northallerton, east to Saltburn and West to the Stainmore Line.Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. For more information, contact the museum on 01388 771439.
Saint John’s Church cel-ebrated a Saturday of sharing and supporting last week as Lent got underway, with a positive determina-tion to do something extra rather than simply give something up. A soup day at the vicarage in aid of Street Children in Manila saw donations of £335 from those who went along to enjoy a bowl of homemade soup throughout the day. Meanwhile, volunteers were also busy bag packing down at Tesco’s in Tindale raising £342.30 for Shildon
Alive and its many commu-nity projects. Revd David commented, “I am always overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of this area, one Tesco’s customer face-booked me to ask if they could donate electronically to Shildon Alive. He said ‘I met such a lovely lady from Shildon who packed my bag with a smile, if only everywhere had people like that.’ Once again Shildon people have shown that they have so much to be proud of.”

Shildon AFC now 4th in the LeagueShildon AFC are now 4th in the league with games in hand on the teams above them, after another com-fortable 5 – 1 home win against Sunderland RCA on Saturday 21st February. It was all Shildon from the kick-off, with Billy Greulich-Smith heading over on just 7 minutes.
