The Chlorine Contact Chamber provides the detention time necessary to ensure a chlorine solution has time to  react with the plant effluent before it is discharged into the East Gallatin River. This chemical reaction disinfects the plant effluent.  As the flow enters this tank it follows a serpentine channel configuration to provide more than 80 minutes reaction time.  

 

This is the plant effluent as it flows over the weir at the end of the Chlorine Contact Chamber.  Compare this quality of water with that flowing out of the Grit

Collector at the head of the Plant.

Flash Mixing/Coagulation

Once the water comes into the treatment plant, chemicals are added and the water is mixed rapidly in a container called a flash mixer.

These chemicals include: chlorine  and ammonia for disinfection, powdered activated carbon (PAC) for taste and odor control, hydrated lime for pH (acidity) adjustment and aluminum sulfate (alum) and a polymer for coagulation.

The alum reacts with the dirt in the water to form a "floc" (coagulated sediment). These floc particles trap the dirt present in the raw water.

Flocculation

After the water passes through the flash mixer, it then flows into the flocculation chamber.  In here,  the water is mixed at a very slow speed by large paddles. 

This allows  the delicate floc particles to grow in size like a snowflake on its way to earth.  As the floc grows, it traps additional dirt and suspended material.

2. Flocculator

To induce the best possible flocculating action, Filtronics' stainless steel flocculator turbines tumble water and chemical mixtures in a slow random pattern with a top-to-bottom vessel flow-through.

Low Energy Input and Low Tip Speed Velocity - 50 ft./sec. assures gentle stirring of fluid to promote proper flocculation.

15-20 Minute Retention Time - encourages formation of a large and durable floc.

Baffled Interior - facilitates the gentle, random motion of the vessel.

3. Clarifier

At the plant, the water goes through 12 foot deep flash mixers where alum and polymer are added to it.
