A NATURE PARADISE In the world of adventure travel, no destination has more allure than the Galapagos Islands. Stark, simple, and beautiful, the Galapagos Islands are truly “the ends of the earth,” a paradise of tropical splendor where earth, ocean, sky, and life itself are open to be examined.

Six hundred miles west of the Ecuadorian coast, the Galapagos Islands have never been linked to other land masses by bridges of land or ice. The Pacific waters surrounding the archipelago drop off rapidly to a depth of two miles. Protected by distance and geography, the Galapagos ecosystem has flourished through the eons, much of its animal and plant life found nowhere else on Earth.

Galapagos Journey

The Galapagos Islands are truly “the ends of the earth,” a paradise of tropical splendor where earth, ocean, sky, and life itself are open to be examined.

The babies are kept until they are about four years old and strong enough to survive on their own. The Fausto Llerena Tortoise Center, a long-term program run jointly by the Galapagos National Park Directorate and the Charles Darwin Foundation, began in 1965 to save the giant tortoise population on Pinzón. At the Tortoise Center, visitors can observe a variety of tortoises, including hatchlings, juveniles, and full-grown individuals. Please remember you cannot touch the tortoises (or any other animals) in the GalapagosHighlights: Giant tortoises in captivityPossible Activities:* WalkingType of Landing: Dry LandingDifficulty: EasyOvernight Carol IIAll meals included

The Darwin Research Station is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inches (new hatch-lings) to 4-feet long. Sub-species of tortois-es interact with one another and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans, stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity.
