Calautham ine, an Amary liJdaceae alkaloid. become an impo rtant therapeutic optio ns used to slow down the process of neurological degenerat io n in Alzheimer's di sease. Although chemical syn thesis of galanrhamin e has been sucressful ly esrabhshcd, the main comm ercial source inBulgana for the produ cti on of gala nt ha rnine-bas ed medicines (undertrade name Nivaliu '") is Leucoj um aesti vum, an Euro-Medrrerranean species, also calle d sum mer snow flake. Since 1989, prescrip t ion regime o fthe ut ilization of this plant species has been imposed and, from theseperspectives, ga lan t ham me production from in vitro cultures is considered as an alte rna tive. In vitro call us and shoot cultu res of L. aest vulllpreviously obta ined w ere checked for galanthamine production. It wasestablished that the amoun t of accumulated galantham ine strongly depended on the level of differentiation. The maximum amou nt of accumul ared biomass (15.6 gj Ll. the endo-galanrhami ne content (55.6 pg/g)and the exo-galanth arnine yie ld (1.6 mg/L) were achieved afte r 5 weeksof subm erged cul ti vat ion o f 1.. aestivum 80 shoot cul tu re, in a m odifiedMS medium. und er illumination.

Further the galanthami ne bloproducrion process w up-scaled in di fferent cul tivat ion systems, such as column bioreactor and RITA''' temporary Inlm erSlon systems. Based on the obta ined re.sults, the in vitroshoot cultures of L aestiv llln could be considered as an attract ive altel nati ve for galantham ine producti on.
