Gainsborough Old Hall is among the biggest and best-preserved medieval manor houses in England.

It is part timber-framed but mostly brick-built. It was built in the latter part of the 15th century with Elizabethan additions, and has an impressive kitchen with an enormous fi replace, a noble great hall, and an imposing lodgings tower.

1 Head East from the front of Gainsborough Old Hall to join Ropery Road where you go right for 400 yards then left into Bowling Green Road. This takes you down to the cycle path running North alongside the River Trent. Turn right at the end into Front Street then fi rst left onto Walkerith Road, which is followed

to Walkerith village where it becomes Stockwith Road.

Continue to follow this road until East Stockwith is reached. As you enter the village a short diversion left along Little Walk will take you to the river and the Church of Saint Peter. On returning to the main route continue through the village to the junction with Carr Lane where the fi rst short route goes right.

East Stockwith lies directly across the

River from West Stockwith, up until 1953 the two villages were connected by a number of ferries.

2 Go straight on past Carr Lane, through Ravensfl eet and Gunthorpe following the fl ood banks of the River Trent until a sharp right hand bend is reached just as you enter Wildsworth. Turn right here along Carr Lane (another one) if you are taking

the second of the short routes or carry straight on along Meynell Street to follow the main route.

3 Take the fi rst right signposted East Ferry then at the T-Junction turn left. Initially the road diverges from the river then rejoins it again at the Jenny Hurn Pumping Station. From here on the fl oodbanks are followed to the third short route which branches right just before you enter the village of East Ferry.

4 Pass straight through the village along High Street then proceed along East Ferry Road for a further two miles to enter Susworth. At the T-Junction the route turns right, then after a further half mile another right turn for Laughton takes you through the Forestry Commission’s Tuetoes Wood to a small car park on the left where you can stop and explore. Leaving Tuetoes Wood you enter Laughton Forest to which there is limited access then after another three-quarters of a mile the short route from East Ferry joins from the right.

5 Carry on along the road towards Laughton and after about another mile the second short route rejoins the route at a left hand bend just before the village.

6 Follow the road round a series of bends to a crossroads, go straight across to visit the church or turn right to keep on the main route.

Go past the pub to leave the village behind then round a sharp left then right hand bend to join the A159 where you turn right for Blyton. This busy road is followed for just over a mile right through Blyton so take care. Climb up the hill round a sweeping left hand bend then as you leave the village take the right turn to East Stockwith. Drop down the hill round a couple of bends and at the T-Junction turn left and after several hundred yards the fi rst short route from East Stockwith joins from the right.

St. Peter’s Church, East

Stockwith. Built in 1846 the church was designed by Thomas Johnston of Litchfi eld. The steeple was badly damaged in the earthquake of 2008 but has since been rebuilt.

7 Carry on past this junction and at the next T-Junction turn left along Walkerith Road for Morton. Go round a long right hand bend then where the road next bends right take a slight left to stay on Walkerith Road go over the speed humps and up to the crossroads where you go straight across onto Ropery Road which is followed past the John Coupland Hospital and back into Gainsborough where a left turn into Cobden Street, just before the supermarket will take you back to Gainsborough Old Hall.
