GADAR MOVEMENT CENTENARYPrem K. Chumber Cell. 510-219-8920
The Gadar movement, which cameinto existence with the formation ofthe Ghadarparty (Hindi Association ofPacific Coast) inthe United States inMarch 1913, was the first meticu-lously worked out radical move to-wards the complete freedom of Indiaafter the abortive attempt of the firstwar of Independence in 1857. It ac-quired its namefrom the weekly news-paper of the party entitled ‘Gadar’launched on November 1, 1913. Withits headquarter (YugantarAshram) inSan Francisco, the Gadarmovementwas primarily cultivated byPunjabi mi-grants who soon after their arrival onthe land of free expression and self-respect realized the existential mean-ing of freedom and what it meant tobe to live in afree country.
The sudden popularity of the-Gadar movement can be gauged fromthe fact that the weekly newspaperGadar, which was first published inUrdu, soon achieved wider circulation
in English, Hindi,Gujrati, Gurmukhiand Pushtu among Indians settled indifferent parts of the world. TheGadar movement aimed at makingIndia a free country from the BritishRaj where there would be no place forreligious fundamentalism, caste ani-mosities and obscurantism.
Though the plans of the revoltof the Gadarmovement were abortedby the mechanized infiltration of theBritish Indian intelligence, the rich andsubstantial message of free countryand its destiny to be placed in thehands of secular forces is being wellconveyed far and wide.
www.ambedkart imes.compays tribute toGadri Babas for theirvalorous efforts to make India a freeand democratic country, whose in-valuable sacrifices are always a boldreminder to all of us that a real free-dom will come when there would beno place to bind faith, caste and fun-damentalism in our society.
Resolution Adopted at the Convention forPeople’s Unity & against Communalism
New Delhi- India is a country withvarious religions, languages, castesand cultures. But there is an under-lying unity in the diversity. A unity, which is based on the unity of thepeople, which makes us all Indians.
This unity of the people andthe country is under threat fromthe communal forces. While thepeople of India, Hindus, Muslims,Sikhs and Christians and many oth-ers fought together for independ-ence, the communal ideology andcommunal organisations stayedaway and instead sought to dividethe people. The people rejected thecommunal ideology and India be-came a secular democratic repub-lic. At present, the communalforces are once again seeking toraise communal issues and createcommunal tensions. In the light of
the forthcoming Lok Sabha elec-tions, the communal campaign hasbeen intensified. This has resultedin outbreak of communal incidentsin various parts of the country. Theriots in Muzaffarnagar are the mostglaring example. It is necessary forthe secular and democratic forcesto unitedly counter the communalforces of all varieties and maintainpeople’s unity. This Conventioncalls upon the secular and demo-cratic forces to strengthen their ef-forts amongst the people andmobilize them for rebuffing thecommunal forces, preserve com-munal amity, defend our compositeculture and strengthen the unity ofthe people.

H.P. TEMPLES STILL BAR DALITSNoted Himachal writer S.R. Harnothas sought an FIR to be registeredagainst the managing committeeof famous Markendeya Temple inBilaspur for practicing discrimina-tion against the Scheduled Castesand Dalits.
He said in a statement thatthe temple management displayedboards, banning the entry of Dalitsinto the temple. Markandeya isalso a small village, about 20 kmfrom Bilaspur town and has anauspicious spring of water attract-ing pilgrims of Char Dham. A festival is celebrated here annuallyon Baisakhi with a great pomp andsplendour. The Markandeya templeis dedicated to Sage Markandeyawho had lived and worshippedhere. Mr. Harnot who has au-thored many books and articles
against the prevalence of castepractices in the backward hillState, regretted the temple man-agement was openly restrictingthe entry of lower castes in any re-ligious shrine of the State. Callingit an offence against the down-trodden, he said the objectionablesign boards were earlier removedby the management on his inter-vention about two years ago. Butthe similar boards were under dis-play again and the district admin-istration was keeping quiet andmaintaining a silence.
The National Commissionfor Scheduled Castes recently re-ceived complaints of “no entry” inabout 35 temples and religiousshrines in Himachal Pradesh.

THE GREATEST STIGMA- CASTE SYSTEMI have recently read ‘Khushwant-nama – The Lessons of my Life’of Khushwant Singh. KhushwantSingh (98) India’s best knownwriter and columnist. The book isworth reading. I quote just one as-sertion from the Chapter ‘TheState of the Nation’ of the book.It does not require any explanation.QUOTE- Of all the stigmas thatdisfigure the fair face of MotherIndia, the worst is the caste sys-tem which inflicts unspeakable in-dignities on lower castesdesignated Dalits or Bahujans. Itis sinful, and more so since wehave not been able to wipe outthe stigma to this day. However, the things have begun to change. The four people who played majorroles in bringing about somechange are Baba Saheb Ambed-
kar, Babu Jagjivan Ram, KanshiRam and Mayawati. Of these four,Dr. Ambedkar was the messiah. He never forgave Gandhi forgranting the lower castes onlyreservation of seats and not aseparate electorate. He played akey role in drawing up the Consti-tution of India and was later lawminister in Nehru’s cabinet. Dis-gusted with the social frameworkof caste hierarchy, Ambedkar ex-horted his followers to opt for an-other religion and persuaded hiscommunity of Mahars to converten masse to Buddhism. He re-mains the most respected icon ofthe Dalits and one of the greatestIndians.UNQUOTEI like Khuswant’s honesty and hiscolumns.
