US$2.4 trillion worth of construction to boost consumption of wood and wood products in the GCC

With 25,000 new housing supplies in 2017, wood and furniture market is expected to see solid growth ahead of the Dubai WoodShow that takes place in Dubai from March 12-14, 2018

More than 25,000 homes are being added to the UAE’s housing market in 2017

Total value of the construction projects in the GCC has crossed US$2.4 trillion (Dh8.8 trillion), according to BNC Network

Value of urban construction projects reached $1.18 trillion (Dh4.34 trillion) in September 2017

Dubai WoodShow to take place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from March 12 to 14, 2018

Wood and wood-based furniture and household accessories products is expected to get a solid boost from US2.4 trillion (Dh8.8 trillion) worth of construction activities at a time hundreds of exhibitorsfrom all over the world showcase the latest products and innovation at the Dubai WoodShow at the Dubai World Trade Centre from March 12-14, 2018.

Research shows that 70 per cent of the timber and wood products are used in construction industry while the rest are used in real estate, interiors, furniture and other industrial applications.

The statistics reflect a growing demand for wood products in the region, primarily driven by the overall economic growth as well as the growth in the region’s Dh8.8 trillion worth of construction activities.

Dubai WoodShow is the largest such exhibition in the Middle East, showcasinga wide-ranging wood-based products.

The wood and wood-based products sector will get a further boost with the delivery of more than 25,000 homes in Dubai this year, according to industry reports, especially when new home-owners start purchasing their furniture and home décor products.

With an average spent of Dh2,000 on wooden products per home, this translates to a Dh50 million spent in this year in Dubai alone. However, with more than 35,000 residential units slated for delivery in 2018, spend on wooden

products is expected to jump 40 per cent to Dh70 million.

In order to capture the market, more than 300 exhibitors from 100 countries are all set to showcase their innovative solutions at the next edition of Dubai WoodShow, which will showcase new designs, style and product innovation on managing home space in innovative ways.

“The growth in the housing market will drive the wood, wood-related and timber business across the region and this creates a great opportunity for the industry,” Dawood Al Shezawi, CEO, Strategic Marketing andExhibitions, organiser of the Dubai WoodShow says. “As families move to their new freehold homes, they will require fresh supply of furniture and due to the tastes and trend, most families look out for authentic wooden furniture and products – wherein lies the new demand.

“However, consumers are also looking for replacing new, innovative products to replace the old furniture, especially those innovative furniture that help families to manage space in a better way. Those products will be in solid demand.”

Demand for wood products is expected to be driven also by the new hotel projects. Dubai will add 40,000 hotel rooms and service apartments to meet the growing demand of tourists as part of the build-up to the Expo 2020, which is less than three years away.

“As the hotel developers are racing against time to deliver more than 40,000 hotel rooms that will help the emirate to serve 20 million hotel guests annually as well as the 25 million visitors to Expo 2020 in six months’ time,” Dawood Al Shezawi, says.

“As we speak,a number of hotel operators are floating tenders for wooden beds,

tables, and wooden interior products to offer greater comfort to hotel guests. This is

going to be a great driver of demand for wooden products.”

Dubai’s hotel sector has more than 100,000 hotel rooms and serviced apartments. By October, Dubai will need to have a strong hotel inventory of 140,000 hotel rooms

and hotel apartments.

The Dubai WoodShow is one of the biggest events of the industry in the region and across the world. Last year’s edition is witnessing the largest participation, in terms of visitors, exhibitors and the exhibition space. In addition, the organisers anticipate more than 300 exhibitors from over 106 countries to visit the show. The total area of the exhibition is 17,388 square meters, offering exhibiting the companies a chance to display their products and offerings in a vast setting.

New milestone for a long-standing successful customer relationship: The Thai Vanachai Panel Industries Company Limited placed its 12th order with Siempelkamp in October.

The order includes a 4’ x 48.7m forming and press line for particleboard production – the longest 4’ ContiRoll® ever supplied by Siempelkamp! The scope of supply also includes a cooling and stacking line, an automatic storage system as well as a sanding line.

The Thai manufacturer for wood-based panels placed the order directly with Siempelkamp Qingdao Machinery & Equipment Co. Vanachai, one of the leading wood-based materials manufacturers in Thailand, will produce standard products for the furniture industry in a cost-efficient way with the line. The company with roots reaching back to the 1940’s had already ordered an MDF plant made by Siempelkamp in late 2016. 1. Readers would like to know more about Gabon

Special Economic Zone SA (GSEZ). Is this a Public

Private Partnership project? Can you give us a brief

introduction?

African countries, in last decade, have promoted the idea of processing of natural resources within their countries itself so as to generate employment and give boost to their economy. With the same ideology, Gabonese Republic also banned exports of Round Logs raw timber in 2010. Subsequently, Gabonese Republic and Olam International Limited came together to form a Public Private Partnership entity, Gabon Special Economic Zone (GSEZ) SA, in order to provide amenable ecosystem and infrastructure for secondary and tertiary processing of timber and other natural resources within Gabon. GSEZ SA as its flagship project has developed a Special Economic Zone, spread over 1126 ha at Nkok (20 Km from the capital city of Libreville). It is one of the largest Industrial Park in Sub-Saharan Africa aimed to promote sustainable production and processing of timber and various other resources in the country. The SEZ at Nkok is the outcome of a shared vision of Gabonese Republic and Olam to effectively master the transition toward industrialization

of Gabon.

2. SEZ is offered worldwide, also launched by many

African countries. What sets GSEZ apart from other

SEZ? Which features have helped GSEZ to attain the

rank of BEST WOODWORKING SEZ in Africa?

Political, Policy and Economic Stability are the major

evaluation parameters for any entrepreneur intending to invest

in a foreign destination and Gabon scores high on all these

parameters. Gabon is a republic with a presidential form of

government since its independence in 1960. Since the start

of economic diversification initiative of the Government

in 2009, the policies of Republic of Gabon have been very

stable and favourable to foreign investments. There is no

currency devaluation risk, which is common to most of African

countries, since the local currency Franc CFA is pegged to Euro.

Furthermore, there are no restrictions no repatriation of profits

by investors to their home countries or other destinations since

Gabon has adequate foreign currency reserves on account of

petroleum exports. These factors have been a differentiator for

Gabon SEZ when compared to SEZs in other African countries.

3. Gabon’s forests, owned by the state, seem to offer

a multiple varieties of wood species. Can you tell our

readers what are the similarities of these species as

compared to well-known species like Teak/ Mahogany/

Rosewood/ Meranti etc.

All forest in Gabon is owned by the state. There are more

than 60 logging companies who have been offered forest

concessions for 20 to 25 years to do sustainable logging.

Gabon Forests offers more than 400 species of trees and out

of which, 80 species are commercially traded. Few of hardwood

species available in Gabon and comparable to likes of Teak/

Mahogany/ Rosewood/ Meranti are:

• Iroko, Beli, Tali and Okan species can be considered as

alternative species to provide teak like finish.

• Sapelli, Sipo, Acajou, Andoung, Gheombi from Gabon

are Pinkish Red to Brownish in colour and are similar to

Genuine Mahogany (Swieteniamacrophylla) in terms of

colour, appearance & density. These timber species could

very well serve as an alternative for Mahogany as it is listed

in CITES Appendix II.

• Padouck is a dark coloured redwood found in Gabon; quite

similar to Rosewood

• Okoumé is quite similar to Meranti in terms of appearance,

colour and other characteristics and can serve alternative

to Meranti.

• Dibetou – Tigerwood or African Walnut

4. Okouméis called as Pink Gold from Gabon –

can you tell us more about the uses of this unique

species in veneer, plywood, furniture manufacturing

and other uses?

Commercial forest harvesting in Gabon began as early as

1892, but only in 1913 was Okoumé, Gabon’s most valuable

wood, introduced to the international market. Gabon supplies

90% of the world’s Okoumé, known worldwide for the production

of veneer and plywood.Aucoumeaklaineana (Angouma,

Gaboon, or Okoumé) is a tree in the family Burseraceae, found

in Equatorial West Central Africa. Okoumé is a medium-sized

hardwood tree growing to 30-40 m tall with a trunk diameter in

the range of 1 to 2.5 meters. Okoumé is recognised as one of

the world’s best materials for rotary cut veneers and face veneer

peeled from Okoumé are in high demand in Europe, China and

USA and its demand is gradually picking up in Asia as well.

Okoumé veneer provides a consistent colour, texture and good

durability for outside use. With diminishing supply of Gurjan

from Myanmar, Okoumé with sustainable supply is a perfect

replacement for Veneer and Plywood manufacturing. Okoumé

is often used decoratively as the top surface veneer in panelling

and furniture or, in solid form in luxury items such as boxes for

cigars or other high value items (e.g. audio equipment) given its

attractive appearance. Okoumé timber is easy to work and is as

suitable for the manufacturing of furniture as for interior joinery.

Moreover, it is a species of a very even colour, good bonding

performances and good compatibility with finished products. Okoumé as a wood species is homogenous and therefore does not

require synthetic repairs. The log quality of Okoumé in Gabon is very high. The first grade is normally used for veneer and plywood,

whereas, the second grade for sawn wood, which still is an excellent quality for the production of sawn timber.Okoumé wood species

at solid timber stage shows a durability level of Class 4 in accordance with EN 350 – 2.

5. The demand for solid wood lumber is high in Gulf

and Middle East countries. Can you explain as to

which species are more useful for indoor furniture,

and which are better suitable for outdoor use like

making Decking etc.?

Okoumé is a perfect wood species for the air dried & kiln

dried international Lumber Market. Like Meranti, the “end using”

markets are the doors & widows frame makers. Also usable

for interior Furniture, Okoumé has the advantage to be easy

to process, polish and varnish even with different coloration.

Okoumé is a very popular species in the Middle East, Europe,

China& North Africa for sawn timber.

Iroko, Beli, Tali and Okan species are quite popular in

Middle East and Asia for furniture and joinery. Tali and Okan

are extensively used in furniture manufacturing and furniture

made out of these species is very popular in Asian and American

markets. Sapelli, Sipo, Acajou, Andoung, Gheombi, similar to

Mahogany, are suited for luxury and high end furniture and

joinery. This is the reason for their high demand in Europe and

USA due to its colour perception. Izombe, Movingui and Bilinga

have appearance similar to Merbau / Kwila and are suitable for

furniture as well as joinery and interiors. Wenge,a premier dark

hardwood, is suitable for contemporary interiors as it blends

quite well with glass and stainless steel. Due to its dark colour, it

is well suited for straightline furniture.

Padouck is suitable for outdoor furniture as well as joinery.

Outdoor flooring, decking and garden furniture made out of it is

exported to European markets. It is resistant to damage from

weather elements.

6. How would you ensure that Gabon will not face

raw material supply shortage? Logistic challenges

are synonymous with Africa. How will you meet these

to transport raw material and finished product?

Gabon’s tropical forest offers enormous possibilities with

a logging potential of 22 million hectares with an exploitable

timber stock of 400 million cbm. Gabon strictly follows

Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) practices which ensures

natural regeneration of forest and sustainable availability of

timber. Therefore, we don’t foresee any raw material supply

shortage for next 100 years and many more years to come for

timber processing units that are settling in Gabon.

Gabon has far better transport infrastructure than most of

its peers in Africa. Government has made huge investment in

last five years to further improve the transport infrastructure.

Public spending on transportation has averaged FCFA 780

bn (€1.2bn) per year, or 70% of the state investment budget

between 2010 and 2015. Gabon’s transport network currently

includes over 10,500 km road, 670 km of Transgabonais

Railway line and 3,000 km of navigable inland waterways.

Therefore, transport infrastructure is not a constraint in Gabon.

However, we accept that there is a shortage of rolling stock and

trucking fleet in Gabon and therefore to overcome this logistics

constraint, GSEZ SA is investing approx. USD 70 Million in

development of five railway sidings along the Transgabonais

Railway line and buy four railway engines, 200 wagons and 120

trucks to ensure smooth transportation of logs from forest to

five identified railway sidings and further from these railway

sidings to the SEZ. To ensure adequate supply of logs at these

five railway sidings, GSEZ SA has tied up with reputed logging/

forest harvesting companies which operate forest concession

of 3 million hectares in cumulative basis and can supply up to

2 million cbm per annum logs sustainably. We believe that the

availability of such logistic infrastructure will not only ensure

required supply of raw material i.e. logs to units in the SEZ but

will gradually bring down the price of raw material even though

the demand for logs will increase in future.

The logistics entity of GSEZ SA is currently operating 84

flatbed trucks which has resolved the problem of availability of

trucks to transport finished good containers to port. Currently, all

units in production are using the road / trucks for transportation

of finished goods containers to port. With the improvement

being done at railway siding in the SEZ and deployment of newly

purchased rolling stock, there would be a modal shift from

road to rail and cost of inland transportation for finished goods

containers will eventually go down. Further to add to this, SEZ

also has barging facility with a capacity to handle two barges

of 750 tons capacity simultaneously and this directly connects

to Owendo port through waterways. New Owendo International

Port developed by GSEZ has new and better handling equipment

which will ensure efficient turnaround, gradually translating into

savings in logistics cost.

7. What are the challenges that you face and what

are your plans for the future?

Sustainability, environmental friendly production and check

on illegal forest harvesting are the key focus area where we

are currently working closing with Government to formulate

a centralized system to curb and eradicate the illegal logging

with the use of latest technology like RFID, GPS to track the

movement of logs from the point of harvesting to the processing

site and finally to end point of use.

WOODWORKING AROUND THE GLOBE

ARBORTECH Wood carver

Arbortech started in Nannup, a small country town in the South West of Western Australia where my wife Kristine and I were living an “alternative lifestyle”. We made a living from a combination of driving school buses, mechanical repairs and woodworking. We believed in the simple philosophy that “a person who did

that which they loved doing, was already successful’. In fact I came to believe that no one could compete with a person who loved what they were doing because they were prepared to do it anyway.

Inventing had always been a love of mine and most of my woodworking tools were a result of experimentation. When we formed Arbortech in 1988 to commercialise our first successful product “the Woodcarver Blade”, we promised ourselves that we would continue with this philosophy and search for people who also enjoyed their work.

The result is that our tools are designed, made and marketed in Australia by people who love tools. Naturally our staffs are formally qualified but there is no better qualification than their level

of commitment and enthusiasm that is embodied in every one of our products.

It is our intention to produce interesting products that are a joy to use with marked improvements in performance and safety over existing tools. I have come to realise that inventing is the easy part and that taking concepts from prototype to product to market is far more difficult, especially for a small company located in Perth, which is possibly the most isolated city in the world. Yet that is exactly what we do and for that reason I believe that Arbortech is my best invention yet.

So what is the secret behind Arbortech? It’s the passion that comes from pursuing our dreams.

EUREKAZONE Smart Woodworking System

Eurekazone started operations in 2001 in Edison, NJ focusing on bringing safety and innovation to the wood workers looking for better alternatives.

The founder Dino ‘the carpenter’

brought his passion for invention to the wood working industry establishing EurekaZone and the tracksawforum.com user forum. Eurekazone has been bringing Dino’s ideas to life ever since, designing, manufacturing and retailing better and safer alternatives for wood workers everywhere.

Eurekazone pioneered the ‘deadwood concept’ tm and created the EZ Smart brand of tools with this philosophy. This means that the tools and accessories created keep the wood “dead” still in place as you cut, bore, plane, rout, etc.

By naming the concept “deadwood”

we mean that the wood is trapped in place and the tools are positioned so that your hands and fingers are well clear of the blade, substantially reducing the risk of injury.

Today, Eurekazone, LLC operates from a new expanded facility in Ocala, Florida designing and manufacturing the next generation of tool innovations.

Holders of a number of patents related to the EZ Smart Line of tools, Eurekazone now ships products around the world. Recognized for its quality, innovation and performance EZ Smart tools are setting new standards of performance while keeping its users safe.

The Gorilla Gripper ‘Advantage’ panel

The ‘Advantage’ accommodates plywood, drywall, Melamine, MDF, sheet metal, and virtually all other sheet goods and panels from paper-thin to slightly over 3/4”. It’s very affordable and will benefit its user’s back, neck, hands & arms when picking up & carrying those heavy, cumbersome materials. It makes so much sense versus the old-fashioned way of bending sideways, hoisting those panels overhead, torquing the spine & risking damage to the back & neck in the process.

Considering the importance of a well-preserved back it is likely to be the best investment a construction worker, woodworker, sheet metal worker or DIY’er will ever make. Even burly men need to ask themselves whether being ‘macho’ is worth even one trip to a Chiropractor, a day or two of lost work, or worse yet a lifetime back injury!

WOODWORKING AROUND THE GLOBE

FEATHER PROFeather board pressure pad

Entrepreneurs at heart, Keith and Ron Bow formed Bow Products to solve problems. Driven by creativity and passion to find a better way, the Bow Brothers like to spend their spare time developing new products for woodworking.

Through the years, as with most woodworkers, Keith became aware the hard way of the dangers of ‘kickback” on a table saw. “It’s always there, always on your mind”. “I’ve had my share of scary moments and I’m lucky to have avoided serious injury. It seemed to us, based on the products available in the market, that this phenomenon was just an accepted risk in the industry. Researching injuries

in woodworking, we saw estimates of thousands of injuries every year, many serious, which are a consequence of kickback”.

Keith was not satisfied that traditional plastic featherboards truly met the safety challenge. Sure they all guide wood into the blade, but their designs are all based on the same premise and in measuring kickback resistance force, plastic feathers all performed about the same.

Through trial and error the hinge design enabled this and the Feather PRO was born. Designing hinges in the feathers, they discovered a way to significantly restrict the flow of wood in the direction against the hinge. This essentially added a mechanical advantage to the Hardened Foam. Something, to their knowledge, that was never done before. Ron noted how satisfying it was

when they began to test the concept. “It was simply amazing that this tool was so much more effective against kickback.” Keith added “As we started tinkering with the Feather PRO we realized the product actually outperforms plastic featherboards on the infeed and is less likely to damage a blade or a bit if it came into contact with them. It’s A Win/Win tool, and a fresh new design in a stale product category.”

“This is just the start.” Keith notes, “We have several other tools coming soon.”

Stress Free Management of your Furniture Factory: The Mantra for perfect planning : The 3 Ps -

During regular consultation for factories and in following their state of working I came out with some shocking outcomes that surprised me as how factories are prone to fall in trap of similar set of blunders even though investing huge amount of time, money and energies. Many of the factories were 2-3 years old but still struggling to achieve reasonable level of profits.

For them every working day is full of problems in spite of investing millions of Rupees

in the factory setup.

Most of the factories have almost the same work culture - They possesse high-tech machines but maintain the machines poorly ,and in spite of automatic machines purchased, a lot of manual work is regularly done by semi -skilled workers.

While I was reading an article in TOI, I came across the lines from author and life coach Satish Rao saying “People in India only approach experts for help once the tail is on fire, ie., when stress related disorders starts affecting their well-being or productivity”. This gave me the germ to write this article as I was recollecting the discussion I had with my clients and friends from woodworking field.

Whenever I am exchanging views with furniture manufacturers, it has been told to me that the overall state of affairs is very sad with lot of tension, competition, dependence on skilled workers and falling profit levels coupled with lot of troubles in recovering the payments etc. I have shortlisted the three important aspects that will make the furniture manufacturers life easy and tension free.

Planning seems to playing a very important role in running a factory smoothly. Just planning on papers, buying of machines is not enough to run a factory tension free but implementing the real essence of planning correctly and efficiently is needed.

The Mantra for perfect planning: The 3 Ps are, Planning correctly, Productivity optimization and Profit boosting, that will help you in managing your factory without any stresses.

EXPERT ADVICE

This work culture hampers the output and surface finish of the product. It is a pity that in spite of high-tech machines from best brands the factory is at the mercy of the skills of the workers. There are many equipments available that will eliminate the requirement of manual skills of the workers but neither the supplier not the user is aware of it and we see bulk part of total production as in form of shoddy manual work everywhere done at a slow pace resulting in lower quantity of output.

This is the scenario that inspired me to compile the concept of 3P that will help the industry to come out of the sechronic problems and produce International Quality Product on a big scale. If one takes following 3P seriously than there is no reason why one should suffer such major hurdles in running the factory.

Wrong number of teeth and poorly maintained saw blade

The other important aspect is how much the blade should protrude above the board while cutting. Very few factories are aware of this setting. This resulting in burning marks on the product .

b ] Dust free Edge banding

The Edge banding is the second important operation in the process. It is observed that often the composition of the machines selected is wrong. This results ina variety of unwanted work that results in great loss of time, quality and money. For example I have seen a clean board that had become dirty while processing and many people were employed to clean it with Diesel / kerosene. It was seen that dirt was not removed but spread on more area making it more dirty. The factory staff and bosses were surprised to see the difference between the board before and after edge banding.

Poor edge banding resulting in unwanted cleaning with diesel/kerosene

The FIRST PPLANNING CORRECTLY:

Planning correctly: Planning does not mean only studying the manufacturing process theoretically and buying machines. One has to study each and every operation involved in the manufacturing of any product, small or big, minutely and select the equipment and tooling accordingly. It is pity that in many cases it is observed that results in poor finish.

We will consider one operation “Cutting” for example.

a] Selection of Panel Saw and maintenance of Saw Blades

The first and foremost machine required is a Panel saw and there are many brands available in the market. What I have observed is that there is a misconception that buying a good machine will solve all the problems. It should be understood that the machine does not cut the board, it is the saw blade that cuts the board and it should be rightly selected and maintained properly sharp.

It was observed that most of factories use wrong saw blades with teeth more than 94 teeth up to 104 teeth. This generates more heat and accumulates dust causing burning marks. Normally one should use 60 to 80 teeth for 18 mm for chipboard cutting. Second point was the re-sharpening of the blades. It was observed that the blade thickness changes after sharpening causing imbalance resulting ultimately in vibrations and rough

cutting etc. If sharpening is not done accurately then only few teeth will do the cutting and other teeth will be just moving along.

It is also observed in many factories that some machines

are of very high quality and brand but on the other side they

are using very crude methods to process the product resulting

in a poor quality and finish. There is no co-relation between

quality and the output of the machines. This results in extreme

imbalance and fiasco.

Crude way to make hinge seat in doorframe

We can observe that if Correct Planning of Each operation is done precisely one can avoid such mistakes and produce an international quality product with smooth surface finish .

The SECOND P

PRODUCTIVITY OPTIMIZATION:

Productivity is directly linked with the quantity & quality of output which is derived from each and every operation that is involved in producing the furniture, however small part of work it may be. One should not look for just getting out put from the machine but should look for quality and good finished product. Balancing of operation plays a vital role in getting desired production. We normally see in factories that some machines are overloaded where as other machines are lying idle and also lot of manual work is done in completing the job. This situation occurs because the composition of machines selected is wrong.

It should be our motto to perform each of the operation on

any machine perfectly without any defects. Any deviation from

this will involve lot of manual work affecting the productivity&

quality. I have observed in many factories that one operation

on a machine is giving rise to a number of unwanted manual

work that will not only cost money and time but will drop down

the productivity to bare minimum level . This is illustrated in the

pictures below.

Dirty copying wheel of the trimming cutter

In the above picture we observe that the factory has a very

good and expensive edge-banding machine but the output was

of very poor quality because of the dirty copying wheel. This

resulted in to a rough finish that ultimately needed further three

major time consuming manual works. One was manual trimming

as is shown in the following picture.

Manual scrapping of defective edge banding by skilled worker

EXPERT ADVICE

Apart from this the other work needed was the cleaning of

the panel due to excess glue and stain marks on the panel made

during the processing. Third one was to do buffing on the edges,

as the edge had becomematt due to scrapping. The buffing was

necessary to bring shine on the edges making it look good at

last.

Spindle molder is one of the most important machine in

furniture factory. It is seen many times that crude methods

are used to do the setting of the tool even though accessories

are supplied with the machine which are provided to ease the

setting of tool. Special accessories are also available that ease

the setting and that too more accurately and quickly. In the

following picture we see that wooden parts are made to make

Crude way of setting the tool on Spindle Molder

the working easy and safe. This crude way of setting not only

needs a skilled worker to set the tool on Spindle Molder, but also

it is risky for safety of operator and also it is prone for kickback

of the work piece. It is unfortunate that the user is not aware of

the fixtures available that will ease the working and supplier is

also not able to guide about the accurate and safe use. With right

accessories &jigs the spindle molder is safest and the King of

machines on the floor as it can shape& profile the components

with least efforts - with minimum investment and with no risk.

THE THIRD P

PROFIT BOOSTING:

Every factory is keen to boost the profits. But it is not an easytask. Profit boosting needs devoted and sustained efforts to achievethe grand results. Just buying machines and tools will not help in achieving this Ultimate Goal. The product mix should be such that one has to go closer to 80:20 formulas. This means that 80% of your output should result in 20% of the profits and 20% of the output should result in to 80% profits. To achieve this one should have two ranges of products. One product range should be for the larger section of the market - that goes for mass consumption and other should be for the Top End market which needs High End designer products.

It was always asked to me that in spite of buying the same European branded machine and in spite of using the best raw material &hardware why our product finish does not match with Italian or German furniture products.

The simple reason is the lack of 3 Ps, Planning correctly, Productivity optimization and Profit boosting.

EXHIBITION PREVIEW: XYLEXPO 2018

XYLEXPO 2018: 8th May to 12th May, Milan- Italy

“Our recent story demonstrates that Xylexpo has a clear

role and position in the international exhibition calendar. It

is the top showcase for panel processing technology, this is

an undisputable vocation that drives us, as organizers, to pay

utmost attention to all territories where woodworking technology

is applied. To illustrate the different expressions of

2017 our industry, we are developing a few significant initiatives”.

said Lorenzo Primultini, president of the exhibition and Acimall, the association of Italian manufacturers directly involved in the organization of Xylexpo.

The industry is experiencing a sort of “second youth”, with several regions around the world going back to economic situations similar to the pre-crisis period.“We are confident that Xylexpo’s fiftieth anniversary will be combined with an excellent seasons for the global markets”, added Dario Corbetta, director of Xylexpo. “Current figures indicate a positive trend of the Italian market, which is not only an industry leader offering world-class technology, but also a “consumption market” that draws the attention of all global vendors”.

“The widespread return to pre-crisis order and revenue levels

- Corbetta continued - will be a powerful driver for exhibitors, who will bring their best technology to Milan to match the demand of a more and more dynamic global market. This is an opportunity to show your skills and capacity in one of the most mature and stimulating user markets, where you can do “good business”, as well as meet and discuss with many important and popular brands from all over the world. We are not talking only about design, but also high-quality mass production for the world’s giants of furniture retail and trade”.

So, Xylexpo is an exhibition that always gives answers to exhibitors and visitors, from the buyers of big brands looking for technology to support high-volume production, up to handicraft businesses willing to upgrade the technological standards of their “workshop”.

XYLEXPO GROWS: HALL 4 OPENED

Activity is back in full swing for the next edition of Xylexpo. All big brands (Homag, Weinig-Holz Her, Cefla, Ima Schelling, Scm and Biesse, in this sequence) have submitted their registrations, some of them with a significant expansion of their booth area.As a result, organizers have decided to add one hall, hall 4.

“In 2016 we preferred to have a “high-density” layout to offer an agile, lean, easy-to-visit exhibition, in line with the situation of the market”, said Dario Corbetta, exhibition director.“That decision was taken for the benefit of visitors and we fully “exploited” the three halls available. Now the Italian market is much more attractive, the overall economic situation has improved and many exhibitors have requested to expand their booths, so we have decided to add a fourth hall and to adapt the layout accordingly”.

Halls 1 and 3 will host companies specializing in the production of panel processing machinery and tools, surface finishing and the related products, hardware, semifinished materials and supplies; halls 2 and 4 will be dedicated to panel and solid wood processing machinery and tools, primary operation equipment and tools, semifinished materials and complementary accessories.

Again this year - in line with an approach that Xylexpo adopted several years ago before all major international exhibitions – each hall will have a “focal point” represented by one or more industry “giants”.In hall 1 this role will be played by Biesse and Barberan, in hall 2 it will be Scm Group. Homag and Cefla will be the focus in hall 3, Ima and Weinig in hall 4.

They will be surrounded by many protagonists of this industry review.“So far - Corbetta added - 230 companies have registered, taking up approximately 28 thousand square meters, a bit less than the total area of Xylexpo 2016. With these figures we can already say that the fiftieth edition will reaffirm the role of our exhibition as a global reference event for secondary processing and leading-edge technology for industrial and advanced handicraft businesses. Merit for this goes to the many exhibitors who attend the event, leaders in business and technological innovation. Besides the big groups mentioned above.

The coming weeks will be essential, as several companies are still considering their participation in the “Milan May”.

The Swedish sawmill industry Sees big potential to support the fast-growing Vietnamese wood processing industry

The Swedish sawmill industry, gathered under the

name Swedish Wood, participated in the Vietnam

Wood fair in Ho Chi Minh City, and organized a

seminar together with three Vietnamese wood and

furniture industry associations. Swedish Wood is

a department within The Swedish Forest Industries Federation

(the organization for Swedish pulp, paper and woodworking

industries). Swedish Wood is supported by the Swedish sawmill

and glulam industries.

Vietnam is a fast-growing furniture exporter, with an average

annual growth rate of 15% since 2009. Currently, Vietnam ranks

as the fifth largest exporter worldwide, the second largest in

Asia and the largest in Southeast Asia. With rapid growth and

increased production of furniture, the demand for high quality

sustainable wood materials that follow international regulations

on forest management is on the rise. In 2016, Vietnam imported

USD 1.7 billion of wood materials to fulfill its production needs.

Sweden is the third largest exporter of sawn and planed

wood in the world. “15 percent of the Swedish sawn timber is

exported to East Asia every year, at a value of 500 million USD,

says Charlotte DedyeApelgren, Director Interior & Design at

Swedish Wood. “East Asia is also the region to which timber

exports from Sweden are growing the most. Vietnam is still a

rather new market for, but there is increased interest for Swedish

sawn timber. And last year, sales of sawn timber from Sweden to

Vietnam rose by 86%.”

EGGER’s acquisition of Masisa Argentina is concluded

With the closing of the contracts on the 30th of

September 2017, the plant in Concordia and

the sales structure become part of the EGGER

Group

The acquisition of the Masisa plant

in Concordia, Argentina, from the Chilean Masisa S.A. is

successfully completed upon closing of the contracts. This will

be the first time the wood-based material manufacturer EGGER

is represented with a production site outside Europe. The Group,

with headquarters in St. Johann in Tyrol, takes over the number 2

in Argentina for a purchasing price of USD 155 million debt-free.

In addition to the plant in Concordia, which has facilities for

producing and coating chipboard and MDF board, EGGER also

took over the retail network MasisaPlacacentro in Argentina,

Uruguay, and Paraguay that is run independently by 43 partners.

The plant in Argentina employs 500 people, which the Austrian

wood-based material manufacturer is taking over.

“Our goal is to become a key market player in South

America.”

EGGER is a family company founded in 1961 now employs

approximately 9,000 people. In 18 plants, they produce an

extensive product range of wood-based materials (chipboard,

OSB, and MDF board) as well as timber. The company generated

a turnover of EUR 2.38 billion in the 2016/2017 financial year,

and has worldwide customers in the furniture industry, wood

and flooring retailers, as well as DIY markets. EGGER is a full-

range supplier for the furniture and interior design industry, for

wood construction, as well as wood-based flooring (laminate,

cork and design flooring) industries.
