Multi-Bus Adapter Overview

The PerformX Multi-Bus Adapter (MBA) is designed to consolidate data from the J1708/1587 bus, the J1939 bus, and the Power Takeoff (PTO) switch. This data is collected and then delivered to the g3 onboard computer (OBC) via the standard PerformX connection. Power for the MBA is delivered from the OBC, so no external power connections are required.

Multi-Bus Adapter Kits

This guide covers the installation of MBA systems with universal 9-pin and 2-pin connectors.

MBA Installation

2-pin MBA System

“Bold” references in quotations refer to the Part Descriptions on page 7.

The 2-pin MBA system connects to either the J1939 or the J1708 data bus, if one is present, using vehicle-specific adapters and connectors.

1. Locate the appropriate adapter for the vehicle in the “Backbone Connector Kit” (L-016-0153).

Note: The J1939 connectors on the “Vehicle-to-VID Cable” (L-016-0152) cable are designed to plug directly into Freightliner, Volvo and Mack vehicles without adaptors, but the wedge lock for these connectors may need to be changed. See instructions below.

Freightliner, Volvo, Mack J1939 connections

The gray connectors on the end of the “Vehicle-to-VID Cable” have wedge lock keys in them that hold the terminals in place and also make them unique mates to certain trucks. The picture below shows these wedge locks out of the connector.

Figure 4: Wedge Lock Keys

a. To exchange the wedge lock for different vehicles, use a needle-nosed plier to remove the existing wedge locks from both the male and female connectors.

Page 12: g3 Services PenPal Documentation - btcgps.com · a. Unseat the factory 9-pin diagnostic port from the dash. b. Mount the male 9-pin connector of the “Vehicle-to-Repeater Cable”

MBA Installation

b. Replace both wedge locks with the desired type.

If you are NOT installing the MBA into a Freightliner, Volvo, or Mack, you will need to select the proper adapters to mate to the vehicle’s connectors. Adapters are labeled by truck type.

2. For vehicles with J1939 connectors, locate the connectors in the vehicle and plug in the “Vehicle to VID Cable” (L-016-0152), using the appropriate adapter from step 1 if needed.

Note: Refer to the vehicle specific supplement documents to help locate the J1939 and J1708 connectors in your vehicle.

Note: Sometimes you will find a male and female connected in the vehicle and you will need to separate them and install the MBA cable between those connections. Other times you will find a single connector with a terminating resistor in that connector.

Terminating resistors – The J1939 standard requires that there be a terminating resistor inserted into the last connector on the J1939 bus. This is designed to keep stray signals from contaminating the high speed data on the bus. If you use a connector with a terminating resistor (in other words if you connect to the last connector on the bus) you will need to take out the terminating resistor to plug in the MBA cable, and put the terminating resistor into the corresponding connector on the MBA cable. In this case one of the MBA connectors becomes the final connector on the J1939 bus. See Pictures below.
